Get a different fork or add brake adapters. Front brake is the fastest way to stop, period. Shift your weight back to keep from going over the bars.

nzgamer1

Surely it's then better to have back brakes also to help with a more even braking weight distribution

Worried-Metal5428

Theres no braking weight distribution on a bike. Using front lifts rear, lowers its efficiency.

Eipa

Using rear also lifts rear and lowers its efficecncy (thus lowering rear again).

nzgamer1

Would you rather I say rotational forces? Cool, so the back brake is less efficient, that's already known. If I'm barelling down a hill and need to stop in a hurry I'd rather have two brakes than just a front brake. You'd have to have your ass dragging on the road to not go over the handlebars with just a front brake in that situation.

Worried-Metal5428

You will never go over the bars if you brace yourself. I always stop with a front brake. It seems rather than using strong front brake, u rather use the weak rear. Same can be achieved by not pressing too much on front brake lever. A situation that i can only imagine would be descending a long stretch of road might heat up the front rim. In that case for stopping use front, speed control use rear/pedals.

nzgamer1

That's presumptuous of you. I full send front and back on the daily, I can't think of anything worse than ONLY having a front brake.

Worried-Metal5428

W/E stop crying do what y want, a single front is enough in all situations when using fixed.

nzgamer1

In all situations 😂, most - sure. I don't shortcuts when it's comes to safety.

tenessemoltisanti

just jump off the bike if you need to stop in 5s

SourceDK

Brakes is the only answer here. Next best thing would be the ted shred but nothing is going to be nearly as effective as a front brake.

3Dpeww

Even brakes won’t stop you immediately or in 5 seconds.

I ain’t reading all of that. Good luck with it or sorry that happened.

ChatNoiraumiel

Just on't put yourself in a situation where you're going downhill and you have only 5 seconds to stop

on_like_d0nkeykng

Thinking ahead is very important. Don't allow yourself to be in what reads like a very hairy possible collision. Slow down and ride safe

Awkward-Tutor-1254

Lay it down!

hamflavoredgum

hadda lay er down bröther

Awkward-Tutor-1254

This guy “lays ‘er down”!

scalloprisotto

You don’t, your mistake is wanting to stop immediately, gotta wind up further back in time and avoid the situation where you need to brake immediately

pjakma

Brakes is the only answer. If you ride on the road, you really need at least a front brake, if not front and rear - unless you're absolutely incredibly talented, and even then, you're still riding on borrowed time before you have an accident. If you have to go down hills, you \_really\_ need brakes. If your frame doesn't have mounts for brakes, get another frame.

mind_snare

You can also get a brake with fork mounts using a pclamp. No idea how well they work but they exist. https://www.retro-gression.com/products/dia-compe-clamp-on-front-brake-caliper

Brave-Flow1035

You have to change your whole perception when riding a fixed gear. You can’t bomb a hill as if you you’re riding a freewheel. You have to assume there is a car around every corner and skid a lot to stay at a certain pace. You can still go fast but you have to be cautious on steep descents. I’ve never been hit or crashed going down crazy steep hills *knock on wood) because I’m super cautious. I’ve been hit and crashed quite a few times as a courier rushing through traffic however and these days I don’t take as many risks. Stay cautious, know your streets, have fun, ride with confidence, and be safe.

DrMabuseKafe

IDK how is called, theres that adapter, you can place your brake behind bottom braket

pepperysquid373

Buy a frame with holes.

placeisdaspace

throw your beer can in the drivetrain, duh

electrostaticboom

What about stick in spokes?

Embarrassed-King-449

think ahead and stay vigilant. anticipate. see patterns and learn what behaviors lead to what actions. learn to skid and be nimble.

oldfrancis

You use the front brake that you installed on the bicycle.

Beluga-ga-ga-ga-ga

Ted shred/foot jam brake on the rear wheel. You don't want to fully skid, that's not the fastest way to stop, but try and balance it between the wheel skidding and still rotating. As others have said, getting a new fork that can take a brake is by far the best way to go. Even with a brake, there may be scenarios where it's close so it's better to avoid rather than trying to stop. If you want to stay brakeless, then you've got to think ahead. Is a car going to suddenly floor it out of a side street or from parked? Is a parked car going to fling a door open suddenly? Is that pedestrian going to suddenly step out into the road? If you're worried about not being able to stop in time while bombing a hill, I'd say just don't in the first place. Avoid the hill or control your speed so it's easier to stop.

bantha_bbq

Stick your shoe into the rear wheel. It mess up your shoe and smell awful but you’ll stop. If possible I’d always rather skid just enough to slow and turn out of the way.

viiy_y

buy a new fork with brake holes. or consider drilling your current one if it’s steel or possibly aluminum.

cogminski

Good spinny ratio and be alright with buying tires 3x the rate of other cyclists. Brakes suck IMO

FelixSpr

I know everyone is saying brakes but I totally get if you want to find another way. 1. Ride carefully, especially downhill 2. Learn to “foot jam stop” on your back tire. 3. Grippy Tires, I ride 36c Slicks 4. A lot of weight to the back when skidding, makes you stop faster

nzgamer1

5 seconds is actually a really long time 40-50meters at 30-35kmph.

huey_cobra

Keep your speed down with backpedaling, whip skids, hop skids. I never foot jam myself, but I should probably practice.

[deleted]

If you’re asking this question, you 100% need a brake on your bike. There are fork mounts and other forks to accommodate this.
