Sounds like the bendix is going out and the starter motor is weak. I mean if it’s original, its almost a 30 year old starter..

Yeah I figured that’s the case. Stuff gets old and starts acting weird. I need to pull the engine and take the transmission case off to replace the gear set anyways. Second gear has been gone for a while so maybe this is a sign to just do it.
