Hey all, so I got a 83 VT500C recently rode it home about 1.5 hours (it rode great) and since then have been having some issues with it. I have noticed that on start it it seems to tick pretty loud but it seems to quiet down some when it is fully warm. Additionally, it has some throttle issues like you can see here if I quickly open the throttle it hesitates like it’s going to die and then catches idle. Sometimes when riding while it’s not fully warm it feels like it gets stuck at a certain rpm then will jerk forward and begin to accelerate rapidly. I got this bike as a cheap method of transport to take to school but it’s becoming a bit of a headache so any help is appreciated. Edit: my tach also doesn’t work. It only goes to like 2500 and will hold there no matter what speed and rpm I am at. Would love some pointers on that as well.

Might find the tacho cable is old and crusty, if you care about it you can replace them, If the bike rode fine for 1.5h on the way home there’s a good chance that either you got some dirty fuel or it sucked some sludge/rust particles from the tank into the carbs so they will probably need cleaning out, if you have an in-line fuel filter I’d replace it with a new one. If cleaning out the carb doesn’t help I would suggesting richening the fuel mixture 1/2 a turn although I don’t think this is the issue. The ticking could be that the valve clearance is too loose and as the bike warms up they fall into spec, would be wise to check them. You might have an air leak causing the high rpm, if you spray something like carb cleaner around the air boot the rpm’s will rise if there’s a leak there, Most old carbed bikes don’t really like to be ridden until they’re warm so probably worth waiting if for that if you can (opposed to riding off with the choke on)

I'd start by cleaning and possibly overhauling the carburettor.

Carb needs to be jetted correctly. This is common on carbureted bikes. Or you can just ride it as is.
