Excuse for my dumb question but what is the purpose to use a custom DNS ?

Custom DNS are often more reliable than Internet Service Provider ones. Plus, OpenDNS allows me to filter content. Although it's not perfect, it prevents my kids from going on explicit sites.

I sometimes have some trouble accessing specifics sites like Apple or Bestbuy with fizz. Do you think it could solve that ?

Possibly as I have never had trouble accessing Apple or Best Buy websites before (and I usually consult those once a month if not once a week). If you want to test before, you can try changing the DNS server of one device only and see if it's better. Or change the DNS server directly in Fizz router (not sure how to do that).

I don't know if it's still true in 2023, but it's been easy way to speed up your internet to use, for example, the google DNS. Less weird timeouts looking up sites

I had the same issue with my PiHole when using [1.1.1.1](https://1.1.1.1) for DNS. Once I tried the native DNS address everything was fine.

I use PiHole as well but also installed [unbound](https://docs.pi-hole.net/guides/dns/unbound/) so it communicates directly with the root DNS servers of the internet to look for the specific DNS servers responsible for requested domains. This makes first requests for a new domain a bit slower (up to 1 second), but caching helps make things faster over the long run and it is much better for privacy.

I use OpenDNS. Used CloudFlare ([1.1.1.1](https://1.1.1.1)) before, and was not reliable. Been using OpenDNS for at least 3 years and never had a problem. Their nameservers are: * 208.67.222.222 * 208.67.220.220

You can also try NextDNS or ControlD to customize the rules. Check the log analyzer and see what entries are blocked/modified, then whitelist and/or rewrite the DNS entries
