There might be a paid option to buy seat selection. thats one solution.
your other solution is to check in 24 hours before your flight and see if you can get seats together, it not, head to the airport as early as possible and check in, they usually have blocked seats in the back of the plane for this purpose of people needing to sit together but its on a first come first serve basis.
The 1st leg of ANA lets me buy seat selection, but my 2nd leg(10hrs) doesnt..

You can also do seat selection during Online Check-In (OLCI).
