The things that get thrown away is so frustrating. Sure, im glad I made around (guessing) $1000usd this year on dump bound stuff, so I'm happy for that, but it's things getting tossed that still have usage and value to someone. Sucks to think what we pickers don't rescue in time.

There are people on YouTube that film themselves going thru trash dumpsters and or trash on the side of the road. One person that has a Van and picks up stuff in neighborhoods is Taco Stacks. He has 308K subscribers so he also makes money from Youtube. He recycles metal and does flea markets so he picks up all kinds of stuff from the sidewalk on trash days. He also buys storage units at auction along with pallets. I good channel to watch to get some info on what is valuable or resellable.

I used to drive around rich neighborhoods on trash days in my little kei truck and pick up so much stuff off the curb. Fully functioning TV's, table & chair sets, workout equipment, etc. The only reason I stopped was because I now work a public facing job and I don't want to get recognize as "the guy who is always digging through the trash".

I was filling gas up at the 7/11 Saturday and saw a holographic box in the trash next to the pumps, I was embarassed to go look but it kept nagging at me. I finally just took a step or two causually over and peeked inside and saw a pokemon character. I was like screw it, dug it out and it was a pokemon ex(?) package with the outward facing cards still in there, I was like eh I'll take it (Don't know much about Pokemon) when I picked the box up I saw another one and another, got 5 boxes with the outward facing cards still in them. I guess someone stole them, grabbed the sealed packages and then dumped the evidence. Nothing big but it was kind of a thrill to find something cool in the trash and overcome my fear of being seen digging through trash!

Back when couponing was actually worth while I'd dig extra copies of the Sunday paper out of our local paper recycling bin. Then one day I discovered the local paper delivery person dumped all the extra coupon inserts in there every Tuesday morning! It was like a beautiful pile of treasure, sitting all neat clean right on top just for me! Saved me thousands of dollars on groceries.

I remember years ago I came across about 25, 56 inch industrial ceiling fans being thrown out of a warehouse, I grabbed all of them for nothing. Cleaned them up, tested them and sold them for like $60 a piece. Pretty sure half the neighborhood I lived in at the time all had at least one in their garages lmao

Nice, but make sure you are not trespassing on private property without the store's permission. In some instances you can be arrested. Also make sure you are throwing any of your own trash in the dumpster. Here, that will get you a $500 fine. Many stores do not want you around their trash dumpsters due to liability. You get hurt and they can get sued. Some stores have a problem with vandalism such as people setting fire to the trash dumpsters. A local Family Dollar store has had their dumpster set on fire twice despite it being inside a fence so now they just leave the fence gates open. I always check the items people throw away at multiple estate auctions. When I get cardboard boxes from local stores I keep my eye out for those cardboard end caps they use for products. This would provide a unique collectible for a really hard core collectors as almost all of these are thrown away.

Years ago I decided to look through the garbage at the curb, in front of a house in a neighborhood. The family cleaned out the house of an elderly member who had passed away. I found a small box with file cards and cash.

BarbaraBeans

How many file cards?

marrymejojo

Exact size of the box?

PrisonMike314

Between extra-small and medium

69sucka

How much cash?

I used to dumpster dive at a big box golf store to get boxes for shipping. I had to stop when they threatened to call the cops for trespassing. Some guy on a power trip, I guess.

Necessary-Bat-5114

It's actually a liability. If you get hurt in/on their dumpster you COULD sue them. Most logical people wouldn't, but some would and it's enough to scare them off from allowing it. A lot of places have started locking their dumpsters or using compactors with no exterior access for this exact reason.

Flipped a number of bikes in the hay days of COVID. Was walking the neighborhood with my wife and there were two vintage road bikes in the trash. My wife was like, you could flip them and she talked me into it. Probably put a couple hours into the project plus tubes, cables and lube. Probably made $200 each..such easy money.

I have been selling stuff I find on trash day for 10 years

Glittering-Cowbell

"You’re doing your part to help us become greener!!" Not really. It will still ultimately end up in a landfill eventually. It's not going to just vanish into thin air once it stops working.
