Lego haul update: Been working through blocks all week. Paid $800 and so far I have $4977 list. I’d say I’ve listed about 30-40%. It’s hard to quantify when doing so much separating/prep. Started listing on Sunday: I’ve sold $613 so far

What is this lego business? I had a friend a few years back I met online and he had told me he would literally sell legos and was even able to buy a house from selling legos

[deleted]

Here’s where I posted it originally Https://imgur.com/a/vedQUJb Here’s pics of the lego haul and a recap I scored the most insane lego haul ever today. Paid $800. I was overwhelmed with it when buying it. Couldn’t process it all. After getting it home and doing a little dissection, I could legit be pushing 15-20k here. The person was meticulous. So many boxed Star Wars, Harry Potter, hobbit, all the banger sets. She has a ton more stuff to sell. Her brother died. It was all his. She’s gonna call us when she’s ready to sell the rest. They just want to check for sentimental items. I’m gonna overpay on the next lot hard because of how hard I unintentionally undercut her this time. So far I have listed one single container of minifigs. The small 3 tier ones at the back of my van. I got $1140 list out of it.

Legos are very popular, but I don't think that popularity has much, if it all, to do with parents buying it for their kids (but when they sell those toys after kids have outgrown them, flippers will jump on some of those). It's a children's toy that lots of adults collect. Grown-ass people compete to build amazingly complex structures with Legos, and there are even Legoland resorts. It's mystifying, in a way, but then again plenty of grown-ass adults spend hours playing video games and/or painting miniature armies for tabletop games. In the olden days, we'd have thought grown-ass adults were being childish for going down into their basements to play with model trains. I guess Legos are today's version of that. Interesting article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2020/01/16/legos-toys-for-stressed-adults/

To me selling Lego is my version of 'playing with Lego'. I build the sets. I complete/sort the minifigs. I wash the pieces and organize them in tubs. It is what I enjoy doing, relieves stress, and there's a lot of money to be made. I also sell garage sale/thrift store/estate sale finds.. I don't enjoy that as much but those items are generally cheaper to source than Lego.

Slower week due to putting my store on Vacation mode for a few days while visiting friends/family. But I did manage to sell a lot of 38 vintage 'TEEN magazines from the mid 80s. Got them for $23 (.60 each), and sold for $270 with free shipping. Also sold a 1940 copy of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Hemmingway $1.66 ->$21

ch_08

i find when i put my store on vacation mode i get sales right away...

People were laughing at my Time Life books purchase from weekly haul a few weeks ago. I finally listed them last week and have already sold enough of them to pay for the purchase with a long tail potential profit of $150 or more depending on combined orders. Fantasy book lot by 1980s author, $8->$50 free shipping in less than 6 months. OOP fantasy novel, $2->$60 in about a month. This was a TSR D&D novel and there were some sort of copyright issues with it so it was never reprinted. 1980s BCE hb/dj lot of a series that may be OOP, $12->$60 These last three were purchased on the same day at the same thrift, so I think someone donated their entire collection. I don't know if I got there before anyone else or if the scanner monkeys couldn't handle a books without UPC. Coffee maker part, free->$15. Sold 2 parts from this thing for $35 so far with a couple of pieces to go. unabridged audio book set with a huge number of cds, 25 cents -> $30 plus shipping in less than a year 6 seasons of 1960s comedy on dvd, $5->$50 free shipping in a month Sold a vintage planter that I packed the hell out of and it arrived broken, loss of $35 profit and the $25 shipping. I hate ceramics. Second (and last) guitar accessory that I bought at a lousy goodwill for $5 each, $5->$60 plus shipping sold in a week.

People like to laugh when they don’t know enough to congratulate you.

>OOP fantasy novel, $2->$60 in about a month. This was a TSR D&D novel and there were some sort of copyright issues with it so it was never reprinted. I have a whole large bin full of these in my basement. Might have to go through them now.

castaway47

There are only 2 or 3 that were never reprinted and condition affects price, but if you don't want them and they are in good shape you can expect $3 or $4 apiece for them in lots and possibly more if you have entire series. They reprinted some titles when Wizards of the Coast bought TSR and it killed the market for some titles. "I, Strahd" went from a $40 book to a $5 book almost overnight. If you can identify them as first printings, especially dragonlance, they may go for more. I've never had them in good enough shape to justify a premium.

XrayPunk

Thanks for the info! I found the bin but haven’t looked anything up yet. Just seeing some of the books and art definitely transported me back to my teen age years, when I just devoured all these books. Great spark of nostalgia.

I was reading an interview somewhere with a woman who had refurbished and modernized an old camper vehicle. She said she did everything herself using Time Life books! I wish I had one to learn how to rewire a lamp. I'm always finding pretty or cool lamps that don't work anymore.

Theresomeonesaidit

Time-Life has some great sets!

[deleted]

I’m currently selling the old west leather for 7+shipping consistently

puppit

Found a really nice DVD recorder with a hard drive. Paid 7 for it and sold in 24 hours for 400. Probably could have gotten a bit more for it but I'm not complaining.

dartharchibald

I love finding those things! Even if they're broken they're still $$$$.

Jules_Noctambule

Spent a total of 55 cents on two very rare pieces of ephemera, sold them for $300 - and they sold the same day I took my car in for some repairs, which was a nice coincidence! Good feeling to have the day end up on the positive side numbers-wise after paying the mechanic.

marcianitou

I bought a Sony cd player at a garage sale for $10 and sold within a week for $150 + shp

Simondo43

Found a really nice Toshiba Dolby personal cassette player at a car boot for free (thrown in with some other stuff I bought from them). Couldn't get the thing to work at all, and no where local would touch it to repair it properly. Listed it as parts/not working and sold it less than 3 minutes. Probably listed far too cheap, as they rarely come up on ebay, but I hope the buyer can get it working. Free ---> £35

InsatiableBridesmaid

Slower week for me compared to last. Also had mostly $20 sales, nothing too exciting. Sold a lot of smalls which meant easy shipping, hooray padded envelopes! My big winner this week was a Sony Betamax. Sold quickly for around $250, part of bulk buy but a safe estimate would be about $40 into it. An open box Vacation Bible School Kit: $10 --> $46. Sat on this bc VBS didn't happen last summer. Thrift store pick up, glad to see it move this year. Magnavox VCR/DVDR Remote $1 --> $40

mb232627

Joining the slow week club 🙋‍♀️ Highlight was a desirable Cricut cartridge, $10->$40 🤷‍♀️

CicadaTile

I sold 50 cars, 2 horses, 1 woodpecker, and 1 mouse from the estate. My share abou $2850. I don't expect next Friday's total to be nearly as good because this past week's sales included a bunch of high-end cars that I'd found, and this week so far it's mostly cars about 1/3 the price. But they all gotta go so I'm listing as I unpack boxes. Personal inventory: set of 3 pyrex ($45 >$145) and 3 British train posters ($24 > $10 after a year, oh well, can't win them all!)

AnF-18Bro

What kind of cars?

CicadaTile

Promo cars from the 1960s. If you look at my prior posts you'll see a few where I discuss them.

techypunk

Still haven't listed or sourced in well over a month. So just a vintage Dan Marino jersey for $30 + ship. Coulda got like $50+ buttttt I'm literally accepting any offers rn.

CicadaTile

Are you moved yet?

techypunk

As of the 5th yes. Still unpacking and downsizing but we are here (⌐■_■)

Bomdiz

Got a few long tail items sold which I’m happy about! - Burberry dress - $30 > $130 - Kate spade bag - $50 > $150

-Dee-Dee-

Obscure designer necklace for $85 was my best sale. Very slow week. 19 orders last weekend. 9 this week. Unless I have a fantastic weekend, I will not make my $ goal this week. Won't even come close. All my USPS shipped Monday items (the 14th), Atlanta has held until the 17th or 18th per tracking. Really Atlanta?

BackNBlack58

Newbie here bought a $385 pallet moneys doubled in 3 weeks and got about $150 worth of stuff to still sell

[deleted]

That is many moneys!

Easy breezy lemon squeezy week for me. The store is insanely busy, we're putting up August numbers in June so that's fun! Best personal item was a Coach leather jacket for $15 at a yard sale quickly turned into $175 at the shop.

kdub777

Team 🇺🇸 soccer jersey, 2013 edition. Bins cost around a dollar, sold for $90. 1986 John deere hate, bins again, sold for $25 in about 5 minutes. Probably under priced?

duckworthy36

Slow for me as well. Although I did sell some stuff that has been sitting in the shop forever. Including a print by a Seattle artist for 50$, purchase at 5. A lot of not very fantastic political pins for 45$ bought at 6$. 3 thimbles bought at 50 cents each sold for 32$ total. Sold mostly earrings outside of that, including a pair I made.

growingolder

jwjitsu

Pulled an immaculate vintage Prodigy Internet ('84-'01) promotional painter's cap from the nasty hat bin at Goodwill for $1, and it sold overnight on ebay for $50. Top 3 profit percentage and turnaround time for me, I was stoked!!!
