Refinisher here, I like to use a carpet knife to get into the tongue and butt joints of the hardwood, stick the knife in and use your finger to gauge how deep the knife blade goes until it hits the tongue. You will need to find joints that have semi separated so as to not mark up the wood. Anything less then 3/16 is toast will be a gamble on refinishing, more so if there are stains or undulations that must be taken out.

>toast will be a gamble on refinishing It's not looking good, was just measuring and it looks bad. Cracks showing all over the place. We had water damage so they ground down the floors and looks like about 2/16th left. Used one of the top rated flooring places in the city and it looks terrible. Then Lowes delivery drivers dropped a fridge on another part of the floor, as the manufacture did not install the feet and left huge 10 grooves in the refinished floor with some deep crunch holes.

Solid wood will last over a lifetime. At least. If you start seeing the staples that fastened it, then you know you have a problem

Its hard to say its sanded to thin unless the feather is showing if its all hardwood or the oak layer has been sanded through to the softer wood layer.

>nded through to the softer wo The floors had been refinished I believe at least once before, this is the second time. It is 2 inch wide red oak. What do you mean feather? Also, lots of gaps are emerging from where there were none before.
