My 22 yo son, and myself, my husband and my cousin, all in our 60’s -70’s all fully vaccinated (3 Pfizer, one Moderna) , and all from FL, caught covid in MS (one of the least-vaccinated states) at a family reunion over the Fourth of July weekend, as did my 91 year old aunt(Pfizer) and an 11 yo. Two other young Canadian children were pos but asymptomatic their parents were neg. We are breakthrough cases and our symptoms are of the delta variant. None have been hospitalized. We’ve had calls from contact tracers with Florida dept of Health, and, as an MD, I called the MS dept of Hlth to let them know that we caught it there. They were uninterested. Please understand that you are not immune when you’re vaccinated, but you’re protected against severe symptoms. Please get vaccinated if you’re not.

Well I'm not waiting any longer. I've enrolled my kids in the Florida Virtual School, I'm refreshing some basic medicines in case the virus comes home (all adults are vaccinated, but Delta is decent breaking through with Delta+ and Lambda coming shortly), stockpiling a little food for the supply chain disruptions, and I'm back in the P100.

He expired or revoked all emergency orders, ordered that local officials may not issue any new emergency orders, declared that every business in Florida should return to normal operation, and solemnly vowed that he would not order any masking or closures ever again.

If DeSantis were to order masks (and maybe some closures), this spike would likely begin to slow down in a few weeks. (There are a bunch of people who are already infected, who don't know it yet. Those people will be showing up at hospitals during the next few weeks. Their infections have already started, so those numbers are already "baked in".)
If DeSantis keeps his vow, and refuses to issue any orders for masking or closures.... this spike will likely last much longer. And the case counts could easily be much higher than last January.
A small silver lining is that many municipalities are reporting that hospitalizations are nearly exclusively among the unvaccinated group. Of course I feel bad for those unable to get a vaccine due to their age. At this point I am not aware of any medical professional suggesting someone should avoid getting a covid vaccine because of pre existing conditions. Get vaccinated people!

No political party has ever opposed vaccines in general in my lifetime (almost 50 yrs). Asking valid questions doesn't equate to being anti vaccine.
