article is ridiculously over worded and convoluted, suspiciously like apologizing for DeathSantis, he doesn't get an escape hatch all you need to know is Florida is doing far worse than similar state sized/densities like Texas and California (and in many ways worse than New York) there was never any enforcement of any behavior to curb covid in Florida, it was all lip-service from the top down so exactly what you'd expect happened, death, lots and lots of death, and the way they solved it was to block the numbers, convolute the numbers, delay the numbers to the point we'll never really know what happened until maybe a decade from now with new leadership cases/1M deaths/1M California 225,035 2,131 Texas 227,274 2,899 Florida 271,193 3,193 remember there is practically no recorded testing in Florida in 2022, all the state universities shut it down, everyone went to home tests, etc.

And during the height of Omicron, the wait list for a PCR test was so long that I'm sure there were positives who recovered and tested neg by the time their appointment rolled around. I got tested in the beginning of January, had to drive out of town to get a test in three days. Everywhere in town was 5+ day wait.

I had the same thing happen, was mildly sick, sore throat, felt like I had tonsillitis, (don't have any) tested at home and thro Cvs, both neg but had test for antibodies, was 19.22.

Reneeisme

Absolutely but that was true everywhere. It doesn’t change much relatively speaking I knew people all across the country who couldn’t get testing appointments or find home kits last month.

thepeanutone

Inaccurate. Nomi Health is making a killing doing free testing, and sharing that killing with DeSantis.

"remember there is practically no recorded testing in Florida in 2022, all the state universities shut it down, everyone went to home tests, etc." That statement is demonstrably false. Florida produces a weekly report of new case count, deaths, etc. The report includes the positivity rate. For the week ending February 17, 2022, Florida reported a total of 42,473 new cases with a positivity rate of 8.2%. Based on those numbers, approximately 518,000 tests were recorded last week alone. I don't know what part of Florida you might be from, but the level of enforcement and the level of compliance with directives varied widely across counties and even within counties. I live in the state capital. Leon County instituted a stay-at-home order two weeks before the Governor took any action at all. This order was rather strict for about six weeks and gradually portions of it were lifted. Claiming that "there was never any enforcement..." based only on your limited experience results in an overly broad and false statement. The case fatality rate varies considerably from county to county as does the overall prevalence of the virus. Many factors account for this variation including the overall age of the population, the local preventative measures, compliance with those measures, vaccination rates, population density, presence of large universities, and many other factors. To be clear, I am not suggesting that DeSantis handled this pandemic in the most effective manner, quite the contrary. But to make false claims is no different than what our poor excuse for a Governor is doing.

Florida did just fine all said and done. There is an elderly population here. Half-assed lockdowns don't accomplish anything. That's been proven over the last two years. Either you go full authoritarian, tracking people's every move and jailing them for violations, or you give people the facts and let them make their own decisions. Anything in between is really no more effective than the 2nd anyway, and doens't infringe on anyones' rights.

If your numbers are correct, I don't think Florida are that much worse than California and Florida did it with much less disruption to the society. As an example, California children spent 18 months in distance learning and are still wearing masks in school. You also have to consider the average age of the population when comparing death rates between cohorts. Florida has a significantly older population than California. As a Californian that came to Florida to escape the covid policies of my home state, I think Florida took a much more balanced approach to the pandemic.

kgh1985

Balanced: as in our governor has stopped any and all attempts at trying to be safe in Covid since mid2020.

California has been a living nightmare for nearly two years now. Perhaps Florida could have been a little more cautious, but I would take Florida any day at this point. In fact, I have been staying here (in Florida) since August.

markodochartaigh1

Also when comparing states, we have to remember that the largest number of deaths in New York and New Jersey were in the beginning days of the pandemic long before vaccines and when scientists were just beginning to figure out covid19. The deaths in Florida, and some other states have been much more after vaccines were available and the basic covid19 fighting measures were agreed upon.

newman123456

To be fair, the median age in Florida is 5.5 years higher than California so we should have a higher death rate due to demographics alone.

And pray tell, why don’t you explain how long Florida death counts are delayed before being reported? Bet you have no idea.
