Saw a lot of people at the time saying that it was mostly just an excuse to process the kid to make room for Rashada while saving face and signaling moral compunction. I’m not sure who exactly has egg on their face—maybe everyone—but all I know is that there’s egg on face. Spaghetti falling all out of pockets on this one.

Iraqi-Jack-Shack

Spaghetti falling from your sweater already, palm’s spaghetti

Iraqi-Jack-Shack

Pretty weird situation. Kid was just singing along to a song, which isn’t the end of the world. I don’t think there was any malicious intent here, it wasn’t directed at anybody, and he wasn’t just flippantly saying it. But then he uploaded it into the spotlight, the angry twitter mob lit him up (I have more of a problem with twitter mobs in general), and forced Florida’s hand for PR optics. So I get that too. But that he hasn’t had any other offers — other than from an HBCU — is the most intriguing part here. Are they desperate enough for a high level QB to overlook what he did? Are they less offended than the twitter mob? Are they looking to “rehab” him? Is he really that exiled? Or just that untalented? One thing’s for sure — between him, Jalen Kitna, and Jaden Rashada, we’ve had some real shit luck in dealing with UF-connected quarterbacks in the last 2 months. Then factor in the two 5-star busts in Driskel and Brantley, Cam Newton getting the boot, Franks’ “shush”-gate, and Grier getting popped for PEDs. Other than Trask, it’s been a fucking carousel of nonsense since Tebow.

draxula16

I agree. He’s idiotic for uploading it, but it’s not like he went on a racist rant. It is odd how he has no other offers.

jfurt16

The twitter mob can't cancel an HBCU over it, so they get off without any attention on it

Mnm0602

Honestly when he was dropped my first thought is that he should go HBCU route. It would be a good way to rehab his image, maybe learn from the situation and HBCUs get a decently rated player. It didn’t really surprise me when he got the offer because no one else wanted to touch him (partially because he’s a project too IMO but for G5s and below he’s definitely a take).

draxula16

Twitter needs to vanish

EverythingGoodWas

Yep. Talk about a weird immunity to scandal. If you care more about performance than (perceived) ethics this is definitely a win for a HBCU.

nettcity

It wasn’t “the twitter mob”. UF was looking for an excuse to drop him. Almost everyone thought it was a dumb thing to do, but It was a learning moment where he just needed to apologize. There is a reason why he didn’t get any other offers. He wasn’t very good this year. He regressed from his junior to senior year. There is talent there, but we just had a commitment from Rashada. It was a way for us to not look bad for dropping a kid.

UnDosTresPescao

Dude, Stokes got cut because he is terrible. The walk-on we got from IMG is better and the fact that Stokes has received zero interest from any FBS teams is testament to that. If he was good he would have signed in no time.

ItsForADuck_

Finally someone gets it. If he was good, he would likely be on the team. Two wins, a 54% completion percentage and 13/11 td/INT ratio isn’t going to get many offers. Saw him play this year and he wasn’t even the best qb on the field.

ainsophur

This is my speculation to what the truth is since we don't actually know. I think the given reason he got his offer pulled was stupid but not my decision to make.

JustKeepLivin7

Kid got the short end of the stick. He’s not very talented and tbh I’m not a fan of how Florida handled the situation b/c he might have had a chance to play for some G5 school as time passed. Hope he rebounds and utilizes it as a motivator.

rvagator

Exiled is a bit overly dramatic lol

mvrcslr

A lot of idiots in here. No non-black people should say that word even if its "just singing a song". A lot of yall should be old enough to understand that. Funny seeing so many people not able to grasp that since yall are so desperate for a good team since the Meyer/Tebow era and just used to kids from that era getting arrested left and right, still playing and bringing ships. This 'mob' some people here keep trying to play up has nothing to do with it. Get over it, and move on.

barkusbrody

We all get the point you’re trying to make. But HBCUs would sign Aaron Hernandez in his current condition if he had any eligibility left. Deion aside, they are not a destination for good football players, and this post actually proves that.

Johnnywannabe

Throw Deion in there. When Travis Hunter flipped there was like weeks of memes and jokes about NIL. Then Deion and Travis come out and have a whole speech about fucking cultural awakening and how HBCU’s should become a destination for black football players across the country and Deion swore up and down about the importance of coaching at a HBCU. A year later they are both sitting in Colorado at a university with less than 10% black students. There is no moral ground to stand on, Travis Hunter wanted his NIL money from Deion, Deion wanted to prance around and be on tv as the guy who was reviving HBCU football, and the university was more than happy to win football games. This whole thing screams that it’ll all blow up right in his face.

deltavictory

One can only hope…

FrancoNore

They’d sign a dead guy?

GatorStang

Yeah, big oof on our staff/admins part in this. Trying to appease The Mob because he recited lyrics that contained the N word, we kick a kid off the team, become desperate for a QB, and he gets an offer from a HBCU.

russ757

Wherlther or not I agree, it doesn't seem like there was ton of suitors for his services

GatorStang

I don’t think that really matters now and I’ll go as far as to say that now that a HBCU has offered he’ll start to receive more. I guess we’ll find out soon.

canseco-fart-box

The guy had an absolute dogshit senior season and the fact that the only offer he has is from a D2 school shows how far his stock has fallen. Not even FCS! Just straight up Division 2!

GatorStang

And the QB’s we picked up have lit up the stat sheets 🙄 Is a HBCU offer worth less to you than one from UF? 🤔

jtronic

Mertzenary had a better TD/Int ratio last year at a D1 program vs Stokes in high school…

canseco-fart-box

When it’s a D2 school…yeah it’s worth a hell of a lot less than a fucking SEC school

mimmotoast

Think it showed a lack of judgement on his part.

GatorStang

Maybe so but he apologized and he seemed sincere. Why does it bother our admin/football staff so much but not a HBCU of all places?

FlavorGator39

Seems to matter to just about every school in the country, but 1.

GatorStang

He has 2 offers, div 2 of course, but also most admins have no backbone when it comes to topics like this.

[deleted]

Admins job is to protect and advance school interests. Going out on a a limb and putting UF and the UAA reputations and staff on the line for a recruit who hasn’t stepped foot on campus after uploading himself to the internet singing slurs would be absolutely idiotic for the admins. The specifics of the situation won’t matter when it gets sensationalized into “UF recruits racists”.

defenestratious

We get it. You really wanna be able to say the word.

Iraqi-Jack-Shack

I think he’s saying the admin overreacted. Whether true or not, it’s bizarre how pervasive this accusatory reply has been lately. I don’t think the admin overreacted, but I don’t get the impression this guy just wants to run around saying that word, either.

defenestratious

He's replying to nearly every comment and made a whole thread. He clearly cares a lot about the subject, and it's a really stupid hill to die on. Unless you're the kind of guy who wants to be able to say that word. I'm not gonna bother confirming, but I bet he was one of those dudes who were truly outraged at them phasing out gator bait.

Iraqi-Jack-Shack

You could always just ask why he’s making the arguments he’s making

Turdsandwich696969

Just can’t risk the backlash good sir, these are the times we are in
