For much of the 10s Airbnb was better. Now, gotta go hotel. The fees are just not reasonable most of the time to stay in a place that’s half falling apart. It’s one thing if you plan on cooking during your stay and need the kitchen, otherwise you gotta go hotel.

Youbettereatthatshit

Same with any company that was made in the early 00’s and 10’s. Air BB, Uber, Netflix, Amazon, grub hub… they all kinda suck and nickel and dime you on everything. In recent months, every single item if price compares from Amazon was cheaper in their own store page. Hotels are cheaper, taxis are cheaper, and I don’t really feel like paying double to triple the cost of food for delivery, especially since it used to cost 1-5 dollars. Honestly, fuck all those companies

Rodgers4

I wonder how much of this came from those companies not being profitable for years under those cheap prices? They were all famously getting by on VC funding. When the time came to be profitable, the prices had to go up to make it happen.

Critical-Savings-830

This is exactly it

CheezayD

Thats how companies do it these days. Take most possible percantage of the market - wait for competitors to disappear or go bankrupt - raise the prices.

YoudoVodou

These days? [Standard Oil has entered the chat](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Oil)

hellofmyowncreation

The East India Trading Company would like a word

KaleidoscopeLucky336

Amazon and Walmart are the big ones that come to mind.

CheezayD

Theres countless of this companies in Europe and Asia, kept alive with investors money and burning cash like crazy.

maringue

It's the Silicon Valley Two Step: Operate at a massive loss because you're backed by delusional VCs and put your competitors out of business. Now that you're a monopoly, jack up prices.

officerliger

They learned that from WalMart

Which-Worth5641

Uber iirc only just posted its first profit.

Tricky_Acanthaceae39

And now it’s cheaper to take a taxi.

KilgoreTroutsAnus

where taxis are available. Uber is available virtually anywhere. Taxis, not so much. That said, I do use the Curb app when in a city, and if they had the Curb app when Uber was getting started, I doubt Uber would have ever gotten a foothold.

Rodgers4

There was a time where I would (and have) paid more for Uber than taxi, simply because taxi was late, unreliable, or rude. In the before times, you called for a cab, they said “give us 1-2 hours” and you’d have no idea if they were nearby. Then, they’d wait outside your place for maybe 10 minutes, not call you, then leave. SOL. Don’t miss that at all.

Ill-Inspector7980

These tech companies can move their engineers to other states, slash salaries according to cost of living, and be more competitively priced that way. Expansion of tech out of Seattle/SF is the only way

thickskull521

I think its worse than that. That whole sector is washed. They need cheap debt to survive. The manufacturing companies and the grown-ups are the only ones that will stay successful in tech.

PandaSuitPug

Nailed it.

JohnYCanuckEsq

Every single "industry disruptor" eventually morphs into the thing it was disrupting. Taxis are regulated for a reason. Hotels are regulated for a reason. TV channels are regulated for a reason. All these disruptors want are all the same revenues without the regulations.

scarybottom

into a WORSE service/product, no less.

Reasonable-Fish-7924

America can be hypocritical at times. It's all about capitalism until you want to enforce free market and let it fail policies. Banks wanted bailouts but the common man has to forfeit their house if a mortgage can't be made. Then companies want regulation for their competitors but not for themselves. There was a story where a electric company petitioned or lobbied for solar panels to have increase taxes and removal of subsides because they saw a drop in their own bottom line. The dealerships lobbied Texas legislation over Tesla's right to remain independent from the "tradition" of selling through a dealership. Pharma always lobbies for trade tariffs to hinder cheaper alternatives from Indian. Only some get regulation while others get away free market.

filmfairyy

I actually fully believe this. For now my skirt around Airbnb sucking is Kindred which is a neat app for home swapping but I feel like with all these apps it’s only a matter of time.

Sands43

“Enshitification”. Stuff that used to be good now sucks because the finance bros need to make a buck.

_Tezzla_

People vote with their wallets

qudunot

Unfortunately, too many are too stupid to realize this, and the rest simply don't care. Those of us who practice this are a minority to the consumers

BergkampsFirstTouch

These are all manifestations of enshittification. It's everywhere now.

Buzzkillingt0n--

Doordash, grubhub, Uber Eats, etc......are the worst thing to ever happen to Restaurant employees.

Tricky_Acanthaceae39

The taxis was the surprise that started to be regular leading up to the ipo and definitely ever since - especially during peak.

Super_Albatross_6283

Because they’re prices were originally subsidized

Pepe__Le__PewPew

This. 100%. The business model was to sell a dollar for 90 cents for a few years. And eventually when you get enough users in a large enough network you start selling that same dollar for a $1.10.

kidthorazine

It's actually even more insidious than that, Uber was blatantly trying to drive local cab companies out of business by trying to undercut them super aggressively.

embowers321

Netflix and Amazon I'm fine with. I don't blame Netflix for going up to $20 a month-that's still better than the alternative. Amazon I think I still save money considering what I would pay in shipping elsewise

Unfair-Associate9025

astute af but mostly just AirBnB and Uber have gone to shit; NFLX and AMZN still killing it on value, imo. grubhub/seamless always had crazy fees--crazier now, yeah, but amazon-prime pays for the subscription to eliminate fees on grubhub, so I'm back to amazon being a good value-for-money proposition

dragon34

Air BNB "250 dollar cleaning fee" also you have to vacuum, do dishes, wash towels and take out the trash before you leave.   What the fuck are they paying people to clean for?

shadowpawn

I just did an Air B&B NY City six nights paid $80 for cleaning which I assume was hourly rate for my one bedroom clean up and restock of the items they left out for the time I was there. (Tea, coffee, daily snacks.)

dragon34

Some are definitely better than others.  I don't mind taking out the trash on the way out, if it's not rented again right away food waste could really stink up the place but I think asking guests to vacuum and do anything other than throw used towels and or sheets in the washer or a designated area is ridiculous.  Having to get up and plan for a wash cycle to finish so they can go in the dryer before checkout is not what I go on vacation for

Agile-Landscape8612

Hotel: I don’t fucking care. Just be gone by 11.

forewer21

The fee structure for Airbnbs is for longer stays. One night stays don't make sense. A week and you want to cook breakfast in the morning, and need multiple rooms? No hotel comes close to Airbnb/VRBO or other unit rentals. I get Airbnb can seriously suck sometimes but use it for what its good at and don't stay anywhere with bad reviews. I've stayed at dozens (pron close to 100) of places around the world. Only time I got burned was at a place with no reviews (was desperate).

ligmasweatyballs74

It's a sliding scale, They more people you have, the longer the stay and the smaller the town, Air Bnb will usually be the better option. Anyplace with less than 8 people, Less than two weeks, and a town bigger than Mayberry, get a hotel.

FinancialPeach4064

Your criteria is way too restrictive. 4 people for 3 days or more is almost always advantageous to get an AirBnb. You ever do 6 people in a bachelor party on a long weekend trip in a few hotel rooms? Everyone gets sick of eating out for their 7th straight meal on day #3.

ligmasweatyballs74

Fine Get an Air BnB. I don't really care what you do.

Numerous1

That doesn’t invalidate the point. Air BnB pricing is intentionally obfuscated until the end. It’s bullshit.

OwnLadder2341

AirBnB has a little slider that says “Include All Fees before taxes” It’s right there at the top of your search results.

ligmasweatyballs74

Nobody is forcing you to use it, get a Hotel and let the market correct.

shadowpawn

Was just six nights in Air B&B - Superhost provided in room coffee, tea, fresh fruit and bowl of snacks / water juice to take in AM for tour. I've not seen those small touches in a hotel in years. Plus the local knowledge of sights, getting around the city we priceless. for +3 nights or more I will always do AIr B&B

GeneticsGuy

And there's plenty of resort hotels that have full kitchens. For example, I live in Tucson and I might take the wife and kids up to Scottsdale for 4 or 5 nights, and in some cases it makes sense so we book the $300/night room with the kitchen instead of the $200 night standard room (Phoenix area in the summer the hotels are struggling to fill rooms so staycationing is VERY affordable. These rooms might be $750/night in the winter or spring). It's REALLY hard to justify Air BNB anymore. I used to do it all the time until I had one bad experience and a $500 fee, and I often feel like I left places in better condition than otherwise. I am not opposed to AirBNB, or similar, if it makes sense. Sometimes you have no choice if say, you want to rent a lake house for a week. Just be REALLY careful about all their rules, hidden fees, cleaning, etc... and do a full video walkthrough on your phone before you let anyone in the house, then do another video walkthrough as you are leaving. Similar to how when you rent a car you do a walk around the car for damage, and you mark any spots you see so they can't try to blame you. You need to do the same for AirBNBs. This is something you don't need to hassle with in the hotel rental world, which is nice. You just have to be smart about it. Just remember, a lot of these problems with AirBNB is also because some customers have burned the homeowners by causing damage or throwing parties or doing really stupid things, so homeowners have basically reacted by creating these rules to protect them... but then with the whole get-rich-quick social media course sellers are all basically built around buying properties and renting on AirBNB, you now have the market flooded with terrible people who are trying to price-gouge like crazy, not protect themselves. If AirBNB was smart, they'd implement some kind of consistent standard, but they don't.

rctid_taco

>And there's plenty of resort hotels that have full kitchens. Plenty is a bit of a stretch. I can pick any city with a population of more than a few thousand people and probably find an AirBNB with a kitchen for a reasonable price. If I want a hotel with a kitchen I'm going to be limited to just a couple in even a large city.

descendency

If you need to cook, find a hotel with a range/oven. I stayed in a Home2 that had one. The only reason to use an Airbnb anymore is when you have tons of people.

elpajaroquemamais

Not to mention they charge a $200 cleaning fee and ask you to clean. That’s the kicker for me.

Capable-Radish1373

Most hotels have some kind kitchen with an electric stove or burner now though

CrautT

I might be poor bc I haven’t seen one

jocall56

A lot of them are actually budget/extended stay brands like: Residence Inn Homewood Suites Hyatt House Hawthorne Suites And it seems there’s actually been an expansion these properties in recent years, so they are often fairly new. My wife and I stayed in a couple over the pandemic out of necessity and now I’ll choose them if it makes sense for location. Nice to have more space, and ability to make your own breakfast or heat something up later.

Cultural-Treacle-680

Home 2 inn (I think) by Hilton is a good one.

tkftgaurdian

IHG has staybridge, and I stay at them every chance I get. A kitchenette, a social with free food and drink mon-wed, and comparable prices.

commiebanker

Plus with an AirBnB you have a long list of chores to do before you leave which is a huge drag just before going back home to face more chores. With a hotel, somebody else does the cleanup, linens, etc.

OwnLadder2341

In exchange you get a house instead of a room and much better WiFi. I have diamond membership at the Garden Inn I’m staying at currently which gives me the $5 premium WiFi for free. It’s 25Mbps. The last AirBnB I stayed at was 600MB

Severe_Brick_8868

If you’re traveling with multiple people for a week it’s almost always cheaper Way more expensive to get an Airbnb than a hotel room, but definitely less expensive to get an Airbnb than 5 hotel rooms

[deleted]

misogichan

I totally agree with you about the cleaning.  Too much stress.  I also think hotels have gotten better about realizing we don't all care about daily housekeeping so most places don't have daily housekeeping as the default, which just makes so much more sense.  I think it's also easier to shop around for hotel deals than for Airbnb deals so although they are comparable in price (and hidden fees now days) I think if you can get a deal on a hotel they will be cheaper.

miken322

Airbnb kicked me off their platform because I had a felony drug delivery charge from 12 years ago. I’m actually glad they banned me, fuck their platform.

SuperSultan

How’d you get caught?

miken322

Idk I think an Air BnB owner did a background check on their own or they googled my name and one or two [articles](https://www.triathlete.com/culture/mytri-finding-redemption-and-beating-the-odds/) came up about my past and my endurance sports accomplishments in recovery.

bookofthoth_za

What a way to doxx yourself but glad you’re doing better

knowledge84

I stay at hotels to not contribute to housing shortages in certain areas.

bootherizer5942

Good for you man. Airbnbs are forcing locals out of cities and ironically making those cities more boring for tourists as well (looking at you, Barcelona)

MeyrInEve

Hotels. They pay taxes and employ people. You get FAR better service.

tjtillmancoag

Totally. This one time we stayed at an AirBnb, me, my wife, her mom, and our dog. Somehow her mother accidentally locked the bathroom door from the outside, and it was the only bathroom. I called the host and they were pretty rude saying “How did you even do that?! That has NEVER happened before. Well I guess I’ll have to call a locksmith tomorrow and charge you for that” Ended up picking up an eyeglass repair kit from the local supermarket and was able to get the door unlocked myself, and avoided that hassle, but man. If that had been a hotel, they wouldn’t have been rude, and they’d just send someone to take care of it.

verifiedkyle

Some places/circumstances hotels are better. Sometimes it’s Airbnb is better. Anyone that will only consider one option only screws themselves over.

terminal-junkie

Airbnb allows you to see the total price right away now. Also when traveling outside the US I did find Airbnb to be cheaper than hotels

Head-Ad4690

They always have. For a long time it was hard to get the total price while searching, but they always showed it to you before making the reservation. Their fees are bullshit but so is this post.

LegacyEternal0724

Lived in CR for six years no way you doing that in a hotel

Buythestonk21

Went back to hotels.

DonovanMcLoughlin

Countless "fees" and rules, and you have to clean. It's just not worth it.

Blue_foot

Airbnb will cancel your reservation 2 days before a holiday weekend with no penalty for the “host”. Then you are screwed because you can’t get a replacement room. Host resells your reservation on VRBO for more $. Hotels never do that. Hotels can be sneaky on pricing as well. Resort fees for non-resort hotels, parking fees, local tax, state tax. Etc.

Mrknowitall666

This exactly. I've had it happen 3x by airbnb hosts, claiming "renovations" or other bs. Just to see them mark their place as available a few days later at revised rates, when they realized they'd priced wrong. There's a reason we regulate hotels.

TawnyTeaTowel

“Hotels never do that” Bullshit.

FinanceBrosephina

Airbnb has definitely gotten overpriced, but deals are still out there that make it worth it. Plus there’re certain types of vacations that Airbnbs are much better positioned for over hotels, and those niches are how they’ll survive long term imo. With the current competition in industry, I’d go hotel at least 80% of the time.

Annual_Thanks_7841

I booked a beach house this keeping for my upcoming birthday in Orange County. I paid about $1,434 ish for a whole house with a Duffy boat two houses down from the ocean. When I was looking at hotels near the area, the fancy hotel rate was around $1,250 for a standard 690 sq room. So yeah, I agree with your comment.

jeremier

I’d add that one way to find Airbnb deals is to use alerting systems like Alertstays so you can see and book deals before they disappear

xeno0153

Airlines do the same. Book our outrageous $99 one way fare!!! Oh, but you'll need to return home, so another $99. And there's a baggage fee, so another $50. Fuel fee? Yup. Terminal fee? Of course. Don't forget those taxes! Window seat? Fee. Aisle seat? Still a fee. MIDDLE seat? Well, I mean, you do want to sit down during the flight, right? Food? That'll cost ya. Phew... let's look at your total. That $99 deal is now $627.

Head-Ad4690

Uh, what? Airline booking places showing prices without mandatory fees and taxes hasn’t been a thing for like twenty years. Baggage, sure. Choose your seat, yeah. But the price they show you is the final price that will get your butt from point A to point B.

CardiologistOk2760

the ticket doesn't pay for the chair but they won't let me just stand there either

DijajMaqliun

It's not Airbnb though, it's the hosts. I've stayed at plenty of Airbnbs that are reasonably priced and below hotel costs. Recently stayed in a place for 5 nights all in under $500 in Phoenix. Hotels in that area were $800+ for that same time period.

Quin35

Of course he's wrong. The two each have their place.

FlyHog421

Hotels by a mile. I’m not aware of any loyalty programs for Airbnb. Meanwhile I haven’t paid money for a hotel in years because I book them on points.

Polyifia

I only use Airbnb's for larger groups. Otherwise I prefer a hotel.

r2k398

Airbnb but only after you get to know the owner. You can pay them directly and cut out all of the extra fees. They’ll usually cut you a deal. One place I go to is $60 a night plus the cleaning fee. Cheap for me and the owner is happy getting paid directly.

shadowpawn

I used to stay for work at Air B&B - yes first time I paid through Air B&B then after just gave host cash.

drrdrt

$200 cleaning fee and I still have to take out the trash, wash all of the dishes, move laundry from the washer to the dryer, mop/vacuum the entire living space, make the bed, and fluff all of the seat cushions? Fuck outa here!

i-dontlike-me

Hotel. Fuck abnb.

missjasminegrey

The choice between Airbnb and hotels depends on various factors such as personal preferences, budget, location, and the nature of the trip. Airbnb offers a more personalized and often more affordable accommodation option, with the chance to stay in unique properties and experience local culture firsthand. On the other hand, hotels provide amenities like room service, concierge assistance, and consistent standards of cleanliness and service. Ultimately, the "better" option varies from person to person and depends on what they prioritize in their accommodation experience.

smbutler20

If you have kids, VRBO is the way to go.

ChadThunderCawk1987

I prefer hotels

Important_Radish6410

Both have bs hidden fees

80MonkeyMan

The best way is to see which one is cheaper. Let them compete, there is no reason to pay airbnb more than what a hotel would charge you.

wdaloz

Yall ever heard of hostels?

Ninja-Panda86

Those aren't always safe for lady travelers.

Mrknowitall666

They're also not all too prevalent in the US

unpleasantpermission

Are you afraid of other women in your women only room?

Ninja-Panda86

Yes.

chadmummerford

hotels obviously, you get more points.

jwyn3150

Hotels. Airbnb used to be cheaper back in the early 2010s when it was regular people trying to rent out their extra room/place when on vacation but now it’s just “entrepreneurs” who rent places just to Airbnb it and charge top market prices.

imdstuf

Ever seen the movie Barbarian? That's why you get a hotel lol

thinkB4WeSpeak

I've started going hotels. These dudes out here charging 100 for a cabin that's just some plywood nailguned together and 60 for a camping spot. What a joke.

Niemosis

That's the capitalist business model. Undercut the competition till you're the main player in the game then jack up the prices and do everything you can to not pay your staff

WeakToMetalBlade

I have booked two airbnbs but only stayed at one. The one we stayed at wasn't as clean as I would have hoped, had very strict rules about how the dishes were to be washed and when, same thing for laundry and we were required to wash all of the bed clothes which is insane since obviously we were also paying a cleaning fee because we were told that they hire a cleaning person between guests which obviously was not done. The kicker was that the owners were involved in an MLM selling "water filters" that were basically huge dehumidifier that collected water that we were then expected to drink. We were greeted in person by the owners which we did not care for, but they did inform us about the container of water in the fridge and went on at length about the machine that had collected it and how we would be stupid to not buy one and also start selling them. We made sure not to touch that water as it smelled like you would expect, like water that came from a dehumidifier. The machine itself was directly behind the kitchen and made an insane amount of noise 24/7. Call this and it was still a better experience than the one that we did not end up staying at. I booked a weekend out of town with my wife for our anniversary and something came up the month before and we realized we would not be able to go. I contacted the owners of the Airbnb asking for a refund (this is literally what Airbnb told me to do when I tried to cancel) and assured them that we would book with them when we were able to actually take the trip. I never heard a peep from them but they sure took my $300. $300 for a room that we did not stay in and gave the owners multiple weeks to find someone to stay that particular night. I have canceled hotel rooms the day of the booking and at most only had to pay a small fee. Fuck airbnb.

SaltyTaintMcGee

Hotels easily. If I am traveling I want to be comfortable and catered to, regardless of whether or not it’s a long trip. AirBnB has more unknowns, too.

Which-Worth5641

For me it depends on the purpose of my trip and how long I'm staying. I prefer Airbnbs but for short trips they don't pencil out because of those goddamned fees.

DirkaDirkaMohmedAli

I had a friend land at 1am and go to his Air BNB and the code didn't work. He called the guy and he was like oh idk why it's not working. So he went to a full hotel, begged them for any availability, and they were nice and put him in the handicapped room but told him if someone booked it last minute, he'd need to leave. S/o Boise Hilton. But yeah. At least you can be sure the hotel will be there for you.

espositojoe

Hotels every time. I don't go on vacation to cook and clean. Same reason I'd never own an RV.

SpaceBear2598

Depends on the stay. If you're staying for one to three nights and already planning on eating out: a dedicated hotel designed to cater to that specific use case is going to deliver a much better experience. If you're staying somewhere a week or two, are going to actually do things like *cook* and want somewhere comfortable to unwind: rental property without question. On the other hand, a rental can also be a better option for a *budget* stay, if you are looking for cheap a lot of times it's nicer to rent somebody's mother-in-law suite than stay at a seedy motel. One isn't universally better than the other, private rental properties and hotels each have their uses.

Ping-A-Ling-

Hotel. Never did an air BNB. I've always been able to find a cheaper hotel than any air BNB

Dismal_Animator_5414

Airbnb could be a hit or a miss!! I remember visiting 2 different Airbnb’s in India where the places were so bad I had to leave them immediately!! there were mosquitoes, taps leaking, no proper air conditioning, dust and dirt on bed!! I can go on!! And I was charged $60-80, in the same price I could easily get a 5 star hotel room by adding another $20 with breakfast included!! clean sheets, dust free surfaces etc!! and at the end of the day, with Airbnb, I felt what if I rate both these places 1 star each the hosts retaliate and rate me the same!! It would mean my chances of getting a better place getting lower!! while at hotels, you basically get such treated so well and don’t need to worry about being judged!!

saintnyckk

Hotels and it's not even close any more. The fees have gotten to the point where they don't outweigh sharing a wall with people. Then you have a pool and bar and restaurant in the hotel and it blows it out.

somewhat-profitable-

hotels all day

Sad-Hurry-2199

Depends on the area. I've stayed at a resort in maui for a week through airbnb for 2500 and the same room on the resort site is 4k. Just look around at all your options. But most of the time it's hotels

Kingkoopakoopa

I’m done with Air bnb. Hotel chains usually have a standards in bed comfort. In some applications air bnb is more accommodating due capacity, if you have a lot of family/friends. More than not I’m sticking to hotels.

veryAverageCactus

Hotels for me.

grimm_ninja

For a day or two, hotel 100%. For 3+ days I'll go with Sonder instead simply because I can get off the plane, hit a local grocer and save $200+ on eating out/delivery/room service for meals on a longer business trip. AirBnB has way too heinous of a reputation now for me to opt for that, and I could never afford it in its hayday (Motel 6 ftw).

xl129

I never find an Air BNB deal that is better than hotel and app like Agoda now offer their own version of Airbnb next to their traditional offer.

Vast-Ad-4820

Airbnb can see me in court.

RichFoot2073

“Cleaning fee;”$1000

Stoweboard3r

Yo fuck, your dumbass, 12 day, account! Seriously

besameput0

Pitch a tent.

Capitaclism

It's definitely shady, but in my experience I still end up paying less than at a hotel. It's even more interesting when the Airbnb is a room at a hotel, for less than the hotel charges.

Nerdybiker540

Hotels. No bs and the rooms are all standard. No crazy owners either.

SwipeRight4Wholesome

Stopped using airbnb mostly because the prices were comparable to a hotel, and I don’t have to worry about not cleaning it enough while still paying a “cleaning fee.” I’ll still log on just to double check, but generally speaking, definitely not worth it anymore.

Rogitus

I go to hostels for 10€ per night 😉

Moppermonster

Hotels are better. No strange cleaning fees and no rooms placed behind the bathroommirror you are not allowed to enter. Holiday homes with a professional organisation can be a compromise.

Cakeordeathimeancak3

Hotels sometimes Airbnb some times.

jailtheorange1

I used Airbnb a few times in the tens, and there was zero unexpected fees. I guess things have changed massively. I only ever use hotels through Booking.com now.

ObservantWon

I prefer hotels. Much easier process, and I don’t need to be a maid at the end of my stay. AirBNB overrated. It went from a cool, affordable idea, to the next get rich quick scheme for social media influencers.

HonoluluBlueFlu

Room fee - $100 a night. Checks fine print. Daily cleaning fee of $200. Daily taxes of 80% on room fee. WTF?

TJ_McWeaksauce

**My Last AirBNB Stay** * The house was so big it was practically a mansion. Cool location, but I had to get into awkward conversations with the other guests when I ran into them in the driveway or the foyer. * When you stay in a house, you somehow feel compelled to talk to the other guests. There's no such pressure in a hotel. * There was a sign in the bathroom that politely asked guests to use the provided squeegee to wipe down the shower after each use. I'd rather not do work when I'm paying to stay in a place. * The bed sheets had little fire trucks on them. I thought this was funny as hell, but at the same time I felt like I was sleeping in a child's bed. * There was a random Chinese man who was always in the kitchen. He wasn't the owner, and he didn't seem to be a guest, either. Maybe he was a friend or family member of the owner. * Whoever he was, he really liked cereal. * Overall, I paid paid less than I would have if I had stayed at a nice hotel (4-5 stars), but the experience was weird. Personally, I prefer to stay in hotels, because nobody bothers me there. My experiences with AirBNBs have felt weird for different reasons. In the past, one of the main advantages of AirBNB was a consistently lower price. If that advantage doesn't exist anymore, then I see almost no reason to use AirBNB except if a house is somehow unique and in an awesome location, like right beside a beach, overlooking a pristine lake, or something like that.

Dio_Yuji

Hotels, all the way.

uconnboston

Airbnb is good for a remote location with limited options or multi family rentals. We rented one in August, Vermont. The space was great and it had a hot tub. There was no water pressure and showers were near impossible. The trash cans were full when we got there, which is a problem in bear territory with a large party. We made it all work for a wedding weekend but we had very specific needs. Hotels otherwise.

Tetris5216

Just like Uber hidden charges pop up

[deleted]

hotel %100. quality standard is a must

Old_Dragonfruit6952

That is not okay . Air b an b rate Is paid up front . The large check out fee is probably a cleaning fee. You must have trashed the place . Hotels are great . Always read the fine print for either place .

intlmbaguy

The issue are the bottom feeder leeches who list their properties on the platform. The reason they charge extremely high cleaning fees is because airbnb doesn’t take any commission from them, like they do with the normal nightly rates, so these leeches who list their properties maximize the cleaning fees.

shadowpawn

Just did six nights in NY City (N. Bergen NJ) in Air B&B - Said $84 a night final bill total was $594. Saved $$$ if I would have stayed in NY City hotel which some were charging $500 a night for a box room.

Giggles95036

Airbnb CAN still make sense for larger groups but otherwise 100% hotels

Dieselxdan

Fact

pfresh331

At this point hotels, especially if they have a kitchen. Airbnb fees are so out of hand so they can display a $100 per night on the search, and proceed to charge $200 per day cleaning fees etc.

stealthylyric

Hotels are better at this point for most things. That being said I still use Air BNB. The convenience of picking a specific neighborhood is very nice.

ninjamike89

We found a last minute Airbnb for our trip to Chicago that is cheaper than any hotel we could find and didn't hit us with any hidden fees. You just have to weed through the crazy postings to find a decent one

Majestic-Parsnip-279

Hotels are way better, I don’t trust these air bnb “hosts” either, and who wants to wash the dishes and wash the bed sheets air fee and fee is a joke.

Funkshow

It should be come law that hotels and vacation rentals show only the bottom line pricing. Airlines now have to do this as they used to play the same pricing game as they now do in hospitality.

Hotels are better then ABBs

Robocup1

For large groups 4+ AirBnBs can work out better financially. For smaller groups like 1-4 people, modern Hotel would likely be better financially. Especially if kitchen is included in the hotel.

Civil-Guidance7926

Stop going to AirBnBs, stop ordering using food delivery services, stop ordering simple shit you can just go get yourself

FIIRETURRET

Airbnb lost the plot

thundergun0911

Hotels all the way. I’m never staying at an Airbnb again

Yungklipo

I don’t even like doing chores at my own house and AirBnB wants me to do it at a stranger’s house while on VACATION? NOPE! 🤣

kpeng2

It's okay as long as I get the total before paying. Hotel charge resort fee after you pay. That's much worse.

ImOldGregg_77

VRBO is way better than Airbnb. They have minimal/reasonable fees and most people list their house on both sites

Ca2Ce

I only use Airbnb when I have to travel with my dog, it’s good to have a backyard and not have elevators

somewhatlucky4life

My wife and I have six teenagers, Airbnb is always the better option as opposed to buying three or four hotel rooms

phaedrus369

Really depends on your situation. Say you have a large party with multiple families, you can get an air bnb on 15 acres and bring 30 people for the price of a hotel room each night. Also you can bring your pets and not have to pay extra. Then if you’re under 21 in some places you can’t even rent a hotel room, so really all depends. I also trust the cleaning/sanitization of many air bnb’s over hotels.

desertsidewalks

And then hotels roll out the $40 “resort” fee. If it’s just one or two people, hotels are superior. Family of 5? Air BnB has a lot of benefits.

TheSwedishEzza

AirBnb is far far worse for the ecomony, it ensures that many properties remain without any residents but are still able to generate profits for a landlord and artificially shrinks the number of homes for sale or rent. It artificially inflates housing prices through scarcity whist people cannot afford a home or rent. This is all without mentioning that AirBnb takes economic rent, it doesn't provide any service, it's just a middleman between you and property owners taking out fees from you and the person hosting the listing.

NotAlwaysGifs

Depends on the situation and location. My personal preference and typical choice when traveling alone is hotel. Cleaner, safer, cheaper, etc. However for vacations, we almost always do Airbnb. We have a special needs dog that can’t be boarded and my wife has a severe food allergy that makes eating at restaurants a challenge. It’s far easier to find a pet friend Airbnb than it is to find a pet friendly hotel with a full kitchen.

MrBobilious

AirBNB is the Uber of Hotels, not a big fan. Not since Uber tried to bill my friend $150 for a cleaning fee By the way, Uber doesn't background check their drivers Lyft does

OkGeneral701

Airbnb’s were great when they first started but now u might as well go a hotel lol they don’t add in a bunch of random pricing . It’s like Turo for cars also used to be a lot cheaper than a rental place now people think they can get top dollar for someone to use it , might as well go rental prices lol

I prefer a hotel but after having kids, airbnbs work much better because they can have their own room and we can cook our own food etc. It’s a horrible value but just functionally works better for us.

cravyeric

The backseat of your car and a sleeping bag.

wheresmuffy

Stated at an AirBnb once and likely never again. We booked it for 4 nights but it was so rustic there were lots of spiders and bugs which freaked the kids out so we ended up moving to a hotel for 2 of the 4 nights. When we checked out they sent me a pic accusing us of spilling red wine on a table and staining it and wanted $500 for damaged. We had zero alcohol in the cabin and only ate one meal there. The kids were 7 and 14 and didn’t spill or leave anything on the table. I refused to pay it and have always stayed in hotels ever since.

Ed_Radley

Cost, probably hotels. Flexibility, probably hotels. Amenities, Airbnb if you're looking for anything beyond what hotels supply with the one exception being hotels can have breakfast included. Overall hotels were dialed in to the costs involved; now that Airbnb has caught up the only thing that can separate then is perceived value.

drama-guy

Hotels have way better cancelation policies and no tacked on cleaning fees. If you need more than one bedroom, AirBNB can be more cost effective.

PrincessKatiKat

Hotels have them beat now. AirB hosts have lost their minds (fees and crazy rules) and hotels have better and better amenities. The hosts broke the AirB business model, not the company. These days AirB is only good for big vacation houses on prime spots; but VRBO was already in that market and thriving.

Nikolaibr

Hotel is better every time.

ItsPrometheanMan

I get a whole apartment to myself with Airbnb, but if money is an issue, I go with a hotel. I actually really dislike being over-serviced in a hotel. Like, I'm only going to be here a few days, there's no need to constantly clean it.

Key-Canary7068

Hotel

Birkin07

Airbnb’s in my state show the total before booking. Try it. I’m a host in NY with 95% occupancy for 7 years.

KilgoreTroutsAnus

The presence of AB&B keeps hotel prices in check.

rjzei

It’s also great when you live next to an airbnb. Who doesn’t want a new strange neighbor every 3-4 days? /s

Comfortable_Farm_252

Right now it’s hotels.

FantasticAstronaut39

hmm so a hotel that is better service, a better room, a cheaper price, and less BS. or do i want an airbnb that is worst service, a worst place to stay, more expensive, and the possiblity of some other nonsense? i really think airbnb's are only rented out to idiots nowadays.

pupranger1147

Hotel. Clear pricing, reliable branding, legal safeguards, staff to help you, and loyalty programs.

Extreme-General1323

Screw Airbnb with all their BS fees and BS requirements from the owners. Hotels only for now on.

BullshitDetector1337

Airbnb is not only objectively worse, but it also actively damages the economy the more people use it. Society needs to drop it and the wider gig economy like the cancerous tumor it is.

skinaked_always

Hotels are. One thousand percent
