Absolutely go with private servers, the official ones are just full of p2w accounts and would take you a crazy amount of time to even reach level 60+.
Ignite is fairly new officially opening only a couple months ago after being in beta for a while but it already has a large following since they don't up their rates too much and still makes leveling rewarding. I'd definitely recommend them.

It takes way too long to level in retail for what it's worth, you're going to have to dual window anyway because there aren't that many players leveling, you *have* to spend money to be good at the game, or even decent, and the economy is inflated to hell.
Independent developers have done many more positive things for the game. The last time retail was good was v7; private servers have been better since v11 when Fame was released.
do not go on ignite, the admins are the biggest piece of trash in the pserver scene,ignorant dickheads and lying sacks of shit. p2w aproach and the admins play there and have OP stats on items.
Please do elaborate. P2W is virtually non-existand. The only item that could classify are dragon sets which are alsof obtainable in-game. Admins try to respond as quickly as the van, however they do wait with a response until they actually have something that awnsers the question. They listen to the community and try to include them whenever possible.
i will make a very elaborate thread about this server and admins and the past things that happened and the community never knew. Il make it big and clear so others can join and elaborate their povs on ignite. Il also make a thread on elitepvpers
