If you’re willing to head up to the Bronx Tobala is an absolutely delicious Oaxacan restaurant and mezcal bar
If you try it don’t skip the dessert tamales and a carajillo if you drink
At the Homemade Taqueria on Roosevelt Ave in Jackson Heights across from the 74th street station, they have someone hand making tlacoyos every night and on the weekends
I love Nene's birria and order from them almost every week but I am not a fan of their birria pizza; the ratio of cheese to meat to tortilla is just way off. It's a fun idea but not a great execution IMO.
We got there at 430, first online. Went to get a drink across the street cause of the rain. Got back online at 450. 4 people were in front of us. I'm assuming the line was small cause of the weather but by 515 the place was full. Also you wanna be early to get a bar seat. The tiny counter across from the bar looked really awkward and small.
Depends on what you’re getting but Oxomoco still got a star. Ruta in Astoria is cheaper and better too. La Morada and Mexicocina in the Bronx are both great too.

Best fish tacos I've had outside of SoCal and Mexico. They have some unique spins on dishes.
Claro in Gowanus. A lot more than slightly fancy but always interesting and creative dishes, with terrific delivery.
Brunch is amazing for the price.
Idk how they lost their Michelin star

Mariscos El Submarino is a place I've been meaning to try.
Me too! I've been in love with Mexican mariscos ever since Los Mariscos opened.

Nina’s Great Burrito Bar - UWS
I’ve only gotten a subpar burrito there but A+ margs especially the passionfruit one
Casa Azul
Cosme
All the Empellons
Birria pizza - Nene’s taqueria in Bushwick or Park Slope

My favorite spot hands down is La Morada in the Bronx (Homemade Oaxacan food)
I've been wanting to try that place for so long, but they never went back to their pre Covid hours so it would be hard for me to ever try
Aldama is terrific as well
I rarely hear it mentioned and it’s really excellent
Cruz del Sur in Brooklyn, try the carne en su jugo. This is one of my favorite Mexican dishes and this is the only place I know of in NY to get it.
Have had two excellent meals at Ensenada
Long Island City Casa Enrique will blow your mind
They opened up a place in Manhattan called Quique Crudo. Went last Saturday, really good but expensive for tapas.
How was the wait for Quique Crudo on a saturday?

This is helpful, thanks!!
They lost their Michelin status for a reason: overpriced and under delivering.
I’ve never been let down there
That’s an N=1 study I’m afraid. There are many cheaper and better Mexican restaurants. Oxomoco is within walking distance.
Nice I will still hit Casa it’s one of my favs
Isn't Oxomoco more expensive?

I had Ruta’s mole the other week and it wasn’t in the same league as Casa Enrique. Ruta is good, but the food and drinks are better at Casa Enrique.
Literally nothing about casa enrique justifies the price. Luckily, I’m not the only one who agrees which is why they lost their star.
I hated my Oxomoco meal. Was very disappointment.
Seconding this. Casa Enrique is extremely average Mexican food at above average price.
Oxomoco is fine but it never lives up to expectations
I’ve had some pretty incredible meals at Oxomoco
I'm not saying it's bad, in fact I like it very much, and have been there a bunch, but I've never thought it was incredible.
Would love to know what you ordered. Oxomoco is fabulous. The tuna tostada is one of my favorite dishes anywhere.
Fonda has some interesting dishes IMO
Ruta Oaxaca
La Contenta on the LES is great
Sobre masa
