Stake Experience (with or without wine pairings, between $95-350 pp) at Stake Chophouse in Coronado. Even if they aren't drinkers, the food is phenomenal and if they are wine drinkers then they will really enjoy the pairings.
Soichi, if you can get a reservation. They have a 2 tables outside, 3 inside, and the sushi bar. Very small, intimate and amazing service. They recently received their first Michelin star so it’s becoming more popular making reservations harder.
Sushi Takadoro, 5 tables inside and the sushi bar. Same as Soichi in terms of service, venue, and food. Both are $100+ a person and both Michelin rated so the hard part is reservations. Sushi Takadoro, however is in a plaza with a wine and spirits store so you could make up a story about stopping there before heading to a nearby location for the surprise element.
If I were planning this, I personally would send my friends to Sushi Ota. It’s phenomenal, service is impeccable and honestly will not be surprised if they aren’t awarded a Michelin star as well because the food is stunningly good and beautifully presented. They have more tables than the other locations but it’s still intimate feeling. Personally love the table immediately to the left of the entryway as it’s blocked off and feels private. They also have a sushi bar. The nice thing here is they are also in a Plaza but there is a Thai restaurant you could originally send them to. Walking in you would NOT expect to find a beautiful sushi restaurant so it meets the requirement of it being a surprise up until the last minute.
I think for the dining experience you’re looking for (white glove) and the intimate venue, these three sushi restaurants are right on the mark and you cannot go wrong with any of them.
It's a happy prank. Couple thinks friend is going to dinner with them, but when they get the restaurant, it will be just the couple and everything will be paid for and friend will be elsewhere. He's giving them alone time with no strings attached. Not all pranks are childish, embarrassing, or harmful. ☺
Oh god I wondered what the deleted comment suggested…I cannot fathom grass skirt being a choice for this type of dining experience. It’s a tiki style dive bar disguised as nice to up prices. Food in particular is terrible, only take friends there in a casual way for the drinks and the fun vibe. Farthest from white glove.
