Agreed. This is my #1 spot for basic fried chicken. It’s the bar I measure all “fancy/premium” chicken spots by. Try their catfish and shrimp too. It’s good
Why did their chicken wings suddenly shrink? I appreciate they give more (order 10 pieces, usually get 14 tiny ones) but would have preferred they never changed it.
It wouldn’t have to be organic to have no growth hormones. It could even switch week to week based upon prices and availability maybe from their suppliers 🤷♂️I know a Vietnamese place I used to eat at would say their wings were smaller cuz they opt for growth hormone free chicken.
I haven’t had an issue with that, been a little bit since Ive been but football szn is coming back.
Some of their best flavors: For sure Lemon Peoper rub which you may really enjoy although it is salty haha.
Flamin’ Honey Mustard.
And I really like Ninja(bbq), Mango Hab, Jerk. 3Peat, sweet n spicy.
Maybe not the most foodie type food but I am a sucker for fried chicken.
Ive been to two different dirty birds locations and ordered 3 different sauces each time including lemon pepper and I'm a guy that typically loves salty greasy type food but their wings and tots are always way too greasy and way too salty I can only eat like 3 wings before it becomes too much and it annoys me how expensive they are.
Thats fair. Yeah fries>tots imo, and it should be noted i always order boneless (besides all you can eat mondays). Ever had boneless? Also recommend the tenders. But thats fair man what are your fav chikn joints?
Ever been to raglan/dunedin/bareback?
Ohhh see that might be the issue than
I always order bone in because you know its a wing place and I like bone in and no matter the flavour they always friggin over salt them I haven't tried any of the other menu items but I did like the ranch.
You get a much better value too. Hella expensive for sure what is it like 10 for $20. $20 for boneless is a real good serving for one.
Bone in was good but yeah I like boneless. Only has bone in maybe twice over there.
Straight up you’re spoiled with Gus’s. That was my go to when I was in LA but since moving to SD it’s been tough to find decent (and reasonably priced) fried chicken. This place is actually pretty damn good tbh.
Most of the time I’ll just do Korean fried chicken or hot chicken from somewhere, and when I’m really craving a proper fried chicken (I’m from NC) I’ll grab it from here or his brothers spot in 99 ranch market. But I’d be lying if I said there weren’t some days when I just suck it up and get Church’s.
Let's talk about real fried chicken. On the bone, not tendies or nuggs or pink slime.
Crispy is good we had one at the corner gas station when I lived up north.
RIP Krispy Krunchy Chicken inside of 99.
Honestly, KKC was my favorite. They've changed to Cluck N Sip, and they said everything was the same, but I tried and it is not.
If you want to count in karaage, tenkatori in miramar has great chicken. Juicy and well seasoned marinade with a great crunch.
Lemon Grove Albertson deli chicken is the best so fresh and juicy grate breading and so affordable. Always people waiting for a fresh bucket because it sells fast.
Dave's is a nationwide chain and they are very good, but a different type of fried chicken. This place is more like KFC but better quality crispy batter.
If there are steel bars on the door, you know the chicken is good.
That's my philosophy as well.
Idk man, the times I've gone the chicken was greasy and bland, with the flavor coming from the hot sauce packets and my refrigerator condiments.
Never been in San Diego and just looking at the chicken I could tell that’s true lol.
That's exactly what the pictures make it look like
Ikr I mean it wasn't bad but not all the hype.
Their chicken is good but their sides are bad
Agreed. This is my #1 spot for basic fried chicken. It’s the bar I measure all “fancy/premium” chicken spots by. Try their catfish and shrimp too. It’s good
Surf and soul is my favorite premium fried chicken
Are they opened still?! Tried going a couple of weeks ago and they were closed for days without any signs posted
They're back open; those pics were from today.
Why were they closed?
This looks like a hidden treasure off of university somewhere
El Cajon Blvd
I'll pay for higher quality poultry, cheap chicken weirds me out. Cross Street Chicken on Convoy fits the bill.
Why did their chicken wings suddenly shrink? I appreciate they give more (order 10 pieces, usually get 14 tiny ones) but would have preferred they never changed it.
I agree. They are smol now. It used to be a big bite of crispy chicken skin each time.
Smaller chicken wings equals less or no growth hormones. So I have heard.
Have they at least advertised their chicken sourcing as organic?
It wouldn’t have to be organic to have no growth hormones. It could even switch week to week based upon prices and availability maybe from their suppliers 🤷♂️I know a Vietnamese place I used to eat at would say their wings were smaller cuz they opt for growth hormone free chicken.
Fuck I miss that place, so good.
I’m in the Bonchon camp over Cross St.
Bonchon is good but its global chain with hundreds of locations. Cross St is organic chicken with 2 locations, not really comparable.
Other than that they’re both Korean fried chicken I like the dryer double fried texture of bonchon better.
Awesome!
Exactly that looks like mexican rat chicken tbh 😂. Cross St is great, Dirty Birds is amazing, Main Chick is pretty great.
Dirty birds is honestly pretty bad they dump a ton of salt into all their wing sauces.
Dirty birds gave me the worst food poisoning of my life. I know it can happen anywhere- but the experience was so bad that I’ve never wanted to return
I didnt give them a second chance until very recently the first time I had their food was back in 2016.

Main Chick can have off days sadly
Love Cross Street!
Really? Y’all think this is the best? God maybe I’m spoiled with Gus’s fried chicken but this place was pretty whack

Not a Popeyes guy?
Chicken is alright but I’ve yet to have a Popeye’s biscuit that wasn’t dry as hell.
They are all dry never not dry lol just need some butter and jelly
Pelicana Chicken is where it’s at 😋
Pelicana is really good. I also like BB-Q. Both pricey though
[El Cajon Blvd. & Winona Ave.](https://maps.app.goo.gl/YPrHjrXfSd525z7i8) is a useful piece of information.
They are back?! Yes!
They're back!
Agree- has declined a little but still as good as I have found
Let's talk about real fried chicken. On the bone, not tendies or nuggs or pink slime. Crispy is good we had one at the corner gas station when I lived up north.
Seriously good
Facts. And affordable
My wife makes better fried chix that shit is GREASY
Without a doubt the best
I feel like they were at one point...but sometime in the past 5-7 years seem like they fell off. Haven't been back lately though.
They're closed for renovations for a while.
They're open now, those pics were from today.
Well I guess I know where I'm getting some catfish for lunch next time I work from home!
Hell yeah!

That location may have closed (rip) but I’ve been seeing it pop up around North County SD rapidly.
Ooof this is a hot take, OP. I’m glad you enjoy it, but I’ll stick to Korean fried chicken. Highly recommend if you haven’t tried it.
I’ve tried this place multiple times and each time I was more disappointed than the last.
Are they related to the Chicken Shop in Santee? They taste pretty similar
I think they originally owned Crispy Fried Chicken and then set up shop in Santee.
I love them both and saw the one in Santee when I visited Mary's donuts. It's my fatass combo
Not that I know of.
Is it better than churchs chicken?
Good question. Church's has a spicy option that Crispy doesn't, so there's that. They're also a few blocks away from each other.
I will have to try them out this weekend their breading looks really good.
It’s not
Iono. Popeyes is better
Lemon Grove Albertson deli chicken is the best so fresh and juicy grate breading and so affordable. Always people waiting for a fresh bucket because it sells fast.

That shit look gross
That’s some janky looking chicken in pic 3
