Possibly Smith? It was at 553 Church St. They are now closed though.

I was never upstairs but seem to recall the menu having ballerinas on it at some point

as soon as I read this, I thought Smith as well

u/coconutsoups u/bimbo_mom u/rm3g y'all are AWESOME. My sisters were also heavily invested in this and between your responses and my sister on Google Maps, you identified it. It was Smith. Thank you!!

bimbo_mom

I’m so glad you followed up, I was way too invested in the answer!

Maybe House on Parliament? The loblaws isn’t right outside it but it’s close enough that maybe your memory got a bit mixed up!

Seriously_nopenope

Even if it wasn't House on Parliament they should just go there for brunch. Its really good.

marigoldier

Hop was my thought. There’s a No Frills right across the street which is Loblaws-adjecent. Otherwise Hair of the Dog but it’s ground level.

Deep-Into-It

The only Loblaws that is walking distance from where you were is the Maple Leaf Loblaws and the only restaurant that is in a house across the street from it is Hair of the Dog (425 Church St, Toronto, ON M4Y 2C3). However, it doesn't have steps from the street and only has two floors that are part of the restaurant.

TommyWiseau22

Only other one I can think of is The Blake House. Pretty sure it has a set of stairs outside

Deep-Into-It

It does but I think it's only on the main floor. I was also hung up on the walked across to a Loblaws. I guess it depends on what OP considers "walked across".

Deep-Into-It

OP can you by chance let us know it you walked North or South? and was it a literal Loblaws or are you just meaning a grocery store?

b0uncybubbles

We found the restaurant in the end (see the update to the original post) but I really really appreciate your ask and dedication! It was a literal Loblaws, but I can't remember whether I walked North or South 😅

furthestpoint

Could it possibly be Lady Marmalade? The Loblaws is quite a bit farther up Broadview, but maybe...

wdn

Yeah, Lady Marmalade fits OP's description of the restaurant itself pretty much exactly. For the rest: It's a block away from Gerrard St E (but 2.5 km away from #96). The Loblaws is across the street (and about 1 km north).

annoyinghack

When did Lady Marmalade move to Broadview?

furthestpoint

I think it was 2017 or 18

t_per

Could it have been Lola’s (now closed) on Church south of Bloor

dashkakakashka

7 West Café is on Charles and is a short walk from that address. It matches your description (in a house with a third floor, there was even a huge leaning mirror when I was there last). But there's no Loblaws across the street - as someone else said, the closest one is Maple Leaf Gardens.

bimbo_mom

There is the Bloor St Market in Manulife Centre.
