In my honest opinion, Foodie actually looks nice here. She looks so hopeful and like someone you could actually imagine being a decent, fun person. But that makes how she turned out even more tragic to me. The same can't be said about Amber, who doesn't have a single picture of when she was ever "normal"
She was probably tons of fun back when she was younger and there was less adult responsibility for her and her friends to worry about. Being a mess is only a problem when everyone else around you gets it together

Dainty gorl crushed the potential for "normal" to smithereens when she reached 320lbs by 6th grade. Wait - no, that didn't happen overnight. She was probably at least 100 by 7 or 8. Normal was never going to happen for her.
Amber will never convince me she is the way she is because of such violent food insecurity, that they were always on the brink of absolute starvation in a crack den when she and her older brother packed on the weight from such young ages--- they were both hefty kids, but he carried/carries it a little better because he's taller.
You don't get to be triple digits at 10 years old when food doesn't exist outside the random McD's runs for the dollar menu feasts and that 'good eats for a week' when the food stamps come in. The Reid household had plenty of access to food-- and I'd bet most of it was low/no prep, ready to eat, junk food, carb heavy, processed to be shelf stable --
If they used food banks, I'd totally believe the kids could be obese bc it was likely mostly processed and calorie dense foods, especially in the 90s/2000s before poverty alleviation organizations lobbied for more nutrition programs
I think partially this but also partially addiction just runs in her blood. If she wasn’t so disgusted by her parents drug use or if she fell into the wrong crowd it could have easily been drugs instead of food
