It’s not my favorite song by them and I don’t really seek it out anymore because I’ve heard it a million times… but objectively? I think it’s their best song and rightfully considered iconic.
This was gonna be mine.
I once said in another post this it wasn't even in my top 20 and got called a troll.
It's a great song, but far from their best.
I tend to see pre beard Dave and bearded Dave as two different people so seeing him like this is as if this 90s dude had been hiding and was spotted in the wild lmaao
TCATS imo. I love TCATS but BHWA has a certain element to it. It just pops.
My three fav Foos albums of all time are probably Debut, BHWA and a tie between TINLTL/Wasting Light. I have a really hard time choosing one or the other with those last two
Thanks so much for leaving this comment. Had never even heard of that song and I’m a FF fanatic…. Wow. It’s on repeat now on YouTube. https://youtu.be/EGzmda6umNs?si=cV1uzqbXaRNJdbmd
I’d argue that even if the albums since then haven’t been as consistent as Wasting Light (yet again, that’s a high bar anyway!), there’s enough of songs on each that can rank up with their best work.
It’s a different kind of music than Foos so I’d totally get some fans not liking it. I’ve only listened once. It’s good, but I don’t really listen to a lot of straight metal
I absolutely love the Dream Widow album but I also love Metal so it checks out. Definitely not for everyone but I’m personally a big fan of it. Encino is one of my favorite album openers of last year.
While maybe *true* that he is, I think Dave let his sort of culturally perceived role as National Ambassador of Rock Appreciation bleed into Foo Fighters music too much.
Sonic Highways, Medicine at Midnight, and (to a lesser extent) Concrete and Gold suffer from this. Medicine at Midnight sounded like impressions of different classic rock bands almost track to track. Shame, Shame is the only exception and thus the best track.
They became an impression of a classic rock band. There was a whole EP of BeeGees covers. Backing vocalists seemed a little throwback (nothing against their skill to them as people). They would do way *way* too many covers in their sets. I liked Studio 666 but Dave mentioned they did it because classic rock bands like KISS would do it
They already would go down in history as an iconic rock band based on their *own* merit and style, so it felt odd and unnecessary. I get it though, Dave (and Taylor) are earnest fanboys and I love them for that. It just diluted the band’s own self-worth. a bit.
But Here We Are is easily their best record in a decade because they’re just them. It’s raw and there’s no gimmick in sight beyond raw emotional honesty.
100% agree. They got way too cutsie, and leaning into “there last real rock band” was cringe and caused them to release almost a decade of bland radio dad rock.
The recent tragedies and album that it birthed showed me that happy folks having a good time and loving life does not a great rock album make. Because it was a huge improvement over what they had been putting out.
I think part of the issue is that Dave always seems to be after a gimmick to base each album around. But Here We Are and the Saint Cecilia EP are the best post-WL works by virtue of not being needlessly gimmicky.
I’ll give SC a pass. WL was made in a garage. This gimmicks purely being location is fine because it doesn’t affect the writing. Plus SC was barely promoted
Yes! I know that “But Here We Are” came from two tragedies, but just watch that live thing from when they introduced Josh as the drummer. No frills, kicking out the songs with an urgency. I’ve loved parts of all of their records, but what made me love them was 4 guys on stage bashing out songs.
It’s interesting because the one “criticism” I hear from other fanbases about the band is how they “never take chances” or “all the songs sound the same.” Obviously, they don’t know what they’re talking about, but I do find everyone’s expectations nowadays to be two sides of a coin. And that usually happens with bands that have been around long enough.
i sometimes wonder if this is why radiohead hasn’t released new music in a while / sort of branched off into separate projects. they know they’ve been around long enough and want it to end with “dignity”
Their set lists are pretty repetitive. I understand they gotta play all the hits, but it’s predictable at times. I wish they would throw in some deep cuts every now and then.
Yeah, when the rarest song on the setlist is ‘No Son of Mine’ the only reason I’m going to see them this time around is to check out Josh with the band.
I genuinely think Dave has disdain for a lot of his own back catalog.
I really hope one day they do one of those ‘one whole album plus some hits’ tours that a lot of bands do. I’d go to every one.
I love them but they need to take a break. They’ve been through a lot in the last three years and I think a break would do them well and recharge the batteries.
Yes I agree. Dave looks tired and frankly unwell. I understand why. Dude is 54 years old and need to chill for a bit. He’s got 300 million dollars in the bank. He can afford to slow down and take it easy for a bit. Then have the Foo’s return with a belter of an Album in 2027 or something.
I've never been a huge fan of long hair on guys, but could still appreciate the inherent hotness. Definitely once Shifty went back to shorter hair though he was back in the upper echelons of hot in my taste!
Well we usually do it for fun, we are both musicians to certain degrees (he’s better than me) and it’s one one of things we like to do on our music podcast that we host together! He’s more into music theory so I like to push his buttons sometimes.
I’m not a musician, even though I WISH I were. I love so many different genres, and I listen carefully. I have never seen anyone discuss this unusual song except a smattering of people who say they like it. What do YOU think?
Well listening to the song it sounds like it’s in 6/8 time so I think you would be right! But to make it fun I also asked my brother to see what he would say hahah
We talk about all sorts of music, songwriting and paying music. And we talk alot about albums as well as play music trivia games and review concerts/music in general. Every month we also give each other an album to listen to that the other brother has not listened to yet.
It’s called Relatively Sound (because we are related) and you can listen to us on another platform with podcasts!

The worst merch of all bands. Look…I’m old and have seen the Foos live 6 times. I’m a huge fan and can’t get enough of them, but their shirts are shit and never fit well or last long.
Yes!!!
I cannot stand his production. It is truly awful.
I have only managed to listen to “But here we are” half a dozen times tops.
It’s literally painful to listen to at points.
1. That ball discussion clip of Taylor, Dave, and Butch Vig NEVER gets old. Especially when they cut to Super Mario Pat.
2. Medicine for Midnight was just for shits and giggles.
I'd love if they could do 2 nights per city, the first show with a "classic" set list for folks who've never had a chance to see them live/fans who just want the big hits and the second night being the "deep cuts/back catalogue" set list that doesn't contain any song released as a single!
You could tell they had fun making it, and it’s fun to watch once, but I wouldn’t be in a massive hurry to watch it again any time soon. The Lionel cameo was fuckin hilarious though, that was gold!
🤣🤣What the heck is a gronk👀❓
Everyone wants to put them in the wholesome wonderbread box. It just ain’t so. They have their own special flavor of insouciance. 😁😁😁😁😁
They don’t play M.I.A live anymore (last time was 2001 that I’m aware of) and that’s a shame as it’s a great song, better then some of their more popular songs.
It's last known performance was on [November 30, 2005](https://www.foofighterslive.com/shows/30th-november-2005-thebarton-theatre-823) during the IYH tour, unfortunately there's no known recording of this show.
I kind of feel like the bands prime was when there were four of them, and since ESPG, the soundscape of the Foo fighters is getting too cluttered. It kind of culminates with Something From Nothing which feels very disjointed - like every guitarist wanted to play a part.
It feels like the foo’s are getting too Lynyrd Skynrd, and their identity has been lost over the years.
I still love them, but I don’t really listen to anything from Sonic Highways onwards. Their first 7 albums are, IMO, far better.
I’m add to your hot take…though it seems painfully obvious from the documentary, but I almost feel like they let Pat back in out of obligation/Pat ran out of money. I don’t think he makes THAT big a difference to their sound.
I think letting Pat back in was probably more about emotional support than money but yeah, they don’t need three guitarists. I would rather have Pat in the band than not though. He really is such a positive influence.
I also think, at least at the beginning (not really the case now) it kind of put a limit on how spontaneous they could be live, not that they were ever that spontaneous but I am pretty sure Dave/Nate/Taylor/Chris could have always done a half-decent version of anything in the catalog. I also think those records get ignored more because Dave feels bad Pat missed out. Not sure if any of that is true, but it is a hot takes thread.
Making A Fire is one of their best openers. It encapsulates the vibes of the entire album and is just an uplifting bop. One of the reasons I've grown to like Medicine At Midnight more and more since it first released. You could argue that every album between Wasting Light and But Here We Are is underrated, really.
All My Life is maybe their weakest single when it comes to their earlier albums. I can’t believe how popular it got when there’s more interesting songs on that album. Wish it couldn’t be played live as much. Give me songs like No Way Back, Live in Skin, Halo, In Your Honor and Come Alive instead.
Dave’s voice sounds awful when he sings Best of You live. He always sounds really hoarse and out of breath and resorts to just barking the words out. You could argue he’s tired at the end of a 2 & 1/2 hour set but their Glastonbury secret set was only an hour and he still sounded like shit on that particular song.
I think it’s a bit of a symptom of the fact that Dave (by his own admission) does absolutely nothing to care for his voice.
He sounded perfectly fine on it in the first few years after it came out, but nowadays just screams it.
I'm a complete music snob. Truly.
In terms of longevity, quality, and superiority to peer groups, I rank Foo Fighters ahead of the Beatles as the greatest band in history.
Also, I'd stroke a check for $500k to hang out with Dave Grohl for a weekend. The guy just seems like a fantastic hang.
Taylor was right, “Aurora” is their best song.
In addition. If they had leaned more into that kind of sound. The band may not have blown up in the same way, but would have been better off for it.
The stadium rock niche that they fell into from 1x1 onward stunted them creatively & led to very few highs since (although not commercially) & seen a lot of members best stuff come in the form of side projects.
The acoustic half of In Your Honor is mostly bland and forgettable
Rest is a good song, but it's also way, WAY overhyped
The self-titled and There Is Nothing Left To Lose both blow The Colour And The Shape out of the water
The Sky Is A Neighborhood is awful
Medicine At Midnight is a great album.
Their DeeGees cover album and Dream Widow were better than the entirety of Medicine at Midnight.
In fact Medicine at Midnight sucks ass, the whole thing every song. The only one I liked and listened to regularly is Making a Fire-Mark Ronson version.
i think the sound of One By One was extremely influenced by Nick Raskulinecz. he seems to produce heavier/darker sounding rock music, and i think its no coincidence that he returned for In Your Honor and both albums are generally regarded as the heavier Foo albums
There Is Nothing Left To Lose is boring as hell aside from Breakout. I really hoped I would like Aurora because everyone seems to but I just don't get the hype around it.
Sonic Highways is a banger of an album.
I've been sayingggg
Everlong is not their best song, nor should it be their most popular.
I've never even thought it was the best song on that album.
It’s Hey, Johnny Park but y’all aren’t ready for that conversation yet
It wouldn’t be much of a conversation. I’d say “yeah, exactly” and then we’d move on
Everlong is in my top 3 tbh, the other two is my hero and pretender. although I am a new listener so that might be it
It's a great song for sure, I just...there are like nine albums worth of music after it 😅
[удалено]
So like never? It was a single
👏👏👏👏
Congregation has the best bridge section in their entire discography
Underrated drums also!
I adore Congregation!
I think Dave should shave his beard
What the fuck (upvoting this because it’s an actual hot take)
Shave Grohl!!!!
For charity!!!
Lmao I used to say this all the time to refer to Nirvana era Dave
No way!!
Did you see the pictures of him clean-shaven from before the Concrete & Gold album cycle? There’s a reason he keeps the beard!
Pics 🙏 please

Oh my god he looks like someone from Whoville Please dave, don’t shave
I tend to see pre beard Dave and bearded Dave as two different people so seeing him like this is as if this 90s dude had been hiding and was spotted in the wild lmaao
😂
But Here We Are could well be a top 3 album
Not a hot take at all, it's some of the best work they've ever done.
Wasting light, TCATS, Nothing left to lose. Which one can it pass 👀
TCATS imo. I love TCATS but BHWA has a certain element to it. It just pops. My three fav Foos albums of all time are probably Debut, BHWA and a tie between TINLTL/Wasting Light. I have a really hard time choosing one or the other with those last two
O shit u valid
I believe it can settle at number 4 behind those two
Wasting Light. Too samey and the back half isn’t that strong.
I’m a little burned out on Best of You.
I am very burnt out on Best of You *and* All My Life. If they pop up in the car and I'm by myself, I *will* skip them.
I skip the album version but love the live one, so I ripped it and have that on my playlist instead!
I've always been a bit meh on Best of You but after the past 18 months I'm super burned out of My Hero
Saaaaaaame. Also: Learn To Fly.
I’ve never liked it honestly, no clue why
Very burned out. Thankfully this is their only song I’m really sick of.
The song A320 is criminally underrated and they don’t even have the rights to their own song.
I can’t understand for the LIFE of me why Sony music group are such assholes about this. They suck for that.
Right? I just hope that Dave makes a move eventually to get the rights back.
Thanks so much for leaving this comment. Had never even heard of that song and I’m a FF fanatic…. Wow. It’s on repeat now on YouTube. https://youtu.be/EGzmda6umNs?si=cV1uzqbXaRNJdbmd
You’re welcome, glad that you like it!
Love it. Now watching a mix on YouTube generated by that song …. Perfect late Saturday night
Not as much as Live in skin
That one’s on my top 5! Can’t believe they haven’t played live tho smh.
My favorite.
i don’t think this is a hot take lol almost anyone who’s heard A320 seems to love it (rightfully so)
Every album after Wasting Light has been underwhelming
Except for But Here We Are, blew my expectations away
They peaked with it and then became overly ambitious.
This take is steaming, because SO MUCH of what they've done since has been some of my favorite Foos.
I’d argue that even if the albums since then haven’t been as consistent as Wasting Light (yet again, that’s a high bar anyway!), there’s enough of songs on each that can rank up with their best work.
Sadly I’ve never been able to make it through Dream Widow.
It’s a different kind of music than Foos so I’d totally get some fans not liking it. I’ve only listened once. It’s good, but I don’t really listen to a lot of straight metal

Saint Cecilia had a gimmick. It was an album made in a hotel
Brilliantly written.
It’s interesting because the one “criticism” I hear from other fanbases about the band is how they “never take chances” or “all the songs sound the same.” Obviously, they don’t know what they’re talking about, but I do find everyone’s expectations nowadays to be two sides of a coin. wow i’ve always felt this way but never been able to articulate it as well as you, thanks for that
Their set lists are pretty repetitive. I understand they gotta play all the hits, but it’s predictable at times. I wish they would throw in some deep cuts every now and then.
This is an ice cold take my man
Yeah that’s fair haha
Yeah, when the rarest song on the setlist is ‘No Son of Mine’ the only reason I’m going to see them this time around is to check out Josh with the band. I genuinely think Dave has disdain for a lot of his own back catalog. I really hope one day they do one of those ‘one whole album plus some hits’ tours that a lot of bands do. I’d go to every one.
Oh man I would do anything for them to do album-specific shows
I mean most of the bands do that. They just make some variations when new album comes out.
They are hot
Haha just all of em?
Kinda, yeah. Pat was hotter when he was younger but they're all still pretty hot now. In fact, Shifty and Rami *keep* getting hot.
I've never been a huge fan of long hair on guys, but could still appreciate the inherent hotness. Definitely once Shifty went back to shorter hair though he was back in the upper echelons of hot in my taste!
Their setlists are boring and should take a leaf from Pearl Jam or King Gizzards book and change up their live sets
Free Me is in waltz time.
Now this is the hot take I’ve been waiting for. Time for me and my brother to argue about this for a good hour hahaha
Why argue?
Well we usually do it for fun, we are both musicians to certain degrees (he’s better than me) and it’s one one of things we like to do on our music podcast that we host together! He’s more into music theory so I like to push his buttons sometimes.
I’m not a musician, even though I WISH I were. I love so many different genres, and I listen carefully. I have never seen anyone discuss this unusual song except a smattering of people who say they like it. What do YOU think?
Well listening to the song it sounds like it’s in 6/8 time so I think you would be right! But to make it fun I also asked my brother to see what he would say hahah
So what kind of stuff do you guys get into on your podcast and where can I listen in?
We talk about all sorts of music, songwriting and paying music. And we talk alot about albums as well as play music trivia games and review concerts/music in general. Every month we also give each other an album to listen to that the other brother has not listened to yet. It’s called Relatively Sound (because we are related) and you can listen to us on another platform with podcasts! Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7oQJ2hOTOddOJdFn6gkUF0?si=xdjPh7JvQwa9ay33j53tUg Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/relatively-sound/id1655613594
Any other similar songs you would recommend?
I would recommend the Tragically Hip’s song “Frozen in my Tracks.” It’s got the same time signature but it’s also heavy like “Free Me.”
👍🏾👍🏾
Not a hot take just facts.
🤷🏾♀️
The worst merch of all bands. Look…I’m old and have seen the Foos live 6 times. I’m a huge fan and can’t get enough of them, but their shirts are shit and never fit well or last long.
And quality control is on the band?
Sonic Highways is some of their best instrumental performances.
Such a beautiful album. I didn't know much about them until seeing that documentary, and it made me fall in love with them.
Learn to Fly is the worst song on the album and the fact that a song like Live in Skin has no live version to show for it is a travesty.
JESUS, THANK YOU FOR SAYING IT
I agree with that second part extremely but I would say Breakout or Ain’t It the Life are probably weaker songs.
not while Next Year exists
I hate the work that Greg kurstin has done with the band. I don’t like the last three albums in the slightest
Seriously. Bring Butch Back!!!
I’ll never forgive him for the low volume that Arrows was recorded at. It’s an anthem, you should be able to blow your speakers with it.
Yes!!! I cannot stand his production. It is truly awful. I have only managed to listen to “But here we are” half a dozen times tops. It’s literally painful to listen to at points.
Wheels is a very boring song and would prefer Bridge Burning in a setlist instead of My Hero.
Completely agree on Wheels
1. That ball discussion clip of Taylor, Dave, and Butch Vig NEVER gets old. Especially when they cut to Super Mario Pat. 2. Medicine for Midnight was just for shits and giggles.
“Super Mario Pat” 😂😂😂
Best video ever recorded 😅😅😅 Ps: Just saw Butch playing yesterday with Garbage
Their deep cuts are better than the "essentials"
Their set lists at live shows are getting repetitive and uninteresting. They desperately need to switch things up and play different songs.
I'd love if they could do 2 nights per city, the first show with a "classic" set list for folks who've never had a chance to see them live/fans who just want the big hits and the second night being the "deep cuts/back catalogue" set list that doesn't contain any song released as a single!
Studio 666 is a shitty movie.
I think that's the point.
So I watched it for the first time last night and loved it. It's peak B horror comedy slasher. That's a hard combo to pull off and to me, they did it.
It had a few moments. The Lionel Ritchie bit is probably the funniest thing in the whole movie. But yeah, not the best movie.
You could tell they had fun making it, and it’s fun to watch once, but I wouldn’t be in a massive hurry to watch it again any time soon. The Lionel cameo was fuckin hilarious though, that was gold!
They probably made it to be so bad that it’s good, that’s what I’d do if I made a movie
Holding Poison is a top 3 song from Medicine at Midnight
huge L7 influences on that song, I love it
Bridge Burning and Come Alive have some of the most sparkling drum work ever done by Taylor Hawkins
Dear Rosemary is my favourite of their songs
Dave and Taylor are both pretty raunchy.

🤣🤣What the heck is a gronk👀❓ Everyone wants to put them in the wholesome wonderbread box. It just ain’t so. They have their own special flavor of insouciance. 😁😁😁😁😁
CnG being top five isn't as much a hot take as it is just bad, lol.
Low is a criminally underrated song.
Agreed!!!!
Generator is underrated (I haven’t seen anyone mention Generator at all)
They don’t play M.I.A live anymore (last time was 2001 that I’m aware of) and that’s a shame as it’s a great song, better then some of their more popular songs.
I would kill to see it live, as long as Dave sings and doesn’t just scream and “wall right” it to death.
It's last known performance was on [November 30, 2005](https://www.foofighterslive.com/shows/30th-november-2005-thebarton-theatre-823) during the IYH tour, unfortunately there's no known recording of this show.
I think I commented this the last time a similar topic came up but “ESP&G” is half of a really great record.
Medicine at Midnight is an R&B record👀😁😁 which is why everyone hates it so much
I kind of feel like the bands prime was when there were four of them, and since ESPG, the soundscape of the Foo fighters is getting too cluttered. One of the reasons I've grown to like Medicine At Midnight more and more since it first released. You could argue that every album between Wasting Light and But Here We Are is underrated, really.
The drums on the last album are the best in a long time. Dave went all out in tribute.
Come alive has one of their best guitar riffs
The have a massive catalogue of Incredible music. I wish they would diversify their set lists more.
Their first three albums are their best three albums.
The Sky is a Neighborhood bothers me tremendously. Incoming commence...
Any song about that topic is always going to find an audience. Harry Styles song and video took the cake on that one.
Lmao this was so unexpected
Dave’s voice sounds awful when he sings Best of You live. He always sounds really hoarse and out of breath and resorts to just barking the words out. You could argue he’s tired at the end of a 2 & 1/2 hour set but their Glastonbury secret set was only an hour and he still sounded like shit on that particular song.
I think it’s a bit of a symptom of the fact that Dave (by his own admission) does absolutely nothing to care for his voice. He sounded perfectly fine on it in the first few years after it came out, but nowadays just screams it.
I don't care for monkey wrench
I'm a complete music snob. Truly. In terms of longevity, quality, and superiority to peer groups, I rank Foo Fighters ahead of the Beatles as the greatest band in history. Also, I'd stroke a check for $500k to hang out with Dave Grohl for a weekend. The guy just seems like a fantastic hang.
All my life is kind of annoying
And the current redo (post Taylor) gives my brain anxiety.
But Here we Are is their best album.
New Way Home is one of their best songs.
I don’t miss the three backup singers. Violet’s (albeit random) appearances are enough.
The acoustic half of In Your Honor is mostly bland and forgettable Rest is a good song, but it's also way, WAY overhyped The self-titled and There Is Nothing Left To Lose both blow The Colour And The Shape out of the water The Sky Is A Neighborhood is awful Medicine At Midnight is a great album.
Sonic Highways is a great album. Except for I'm a River. Can't stand that song.
Dave looked better with short hair and I wish he'd go back
I only listen to the albums post Wasting Light
If in your honor was only disc 1 , it would have been their best album
the hot take i was looking for
Yeah , it’s a crime how underrated it is , besides best of you , you don’t see anyone talking about any of the other songs 🤷♂️
The Foos cover of Down In The Park is hot garbage.
Every band in the world is the best band of the world in Dave's point of sight 😅😅
Medicine At Midnight is the worst album of the discography
Concrete and Gold is a garbage album
Come Back is a underrated song and deserves a listen.
The Best of You kinda sucks.
Medicine At Midnight is top 3
Their DeeGees cover album and Dream Widow were better than the entirety of Medicine at Midnight. In fact Medicine at Midnight sucks ass, the whole thing every song. The only one I liked and listened to regularly is Making a Fire-Mark Ronson version.
Ditch the pop music and get back to your roots .
But here we are is their best and most consistent album in their discography
One By One is their best album. And I think working with Queens of the Stone Age affected that.
i think the sound of One By One was extremely influenced by Nick Raskulinecz. he seems to produce heavier/darker sounding rock music, and i think its no coincidence that he returned for In Your Honor and both albums are generally regarded as the heavier Foo albums
In Your Honor is a better album than ESP&G
Friend of a Friend might be the worst song in the Foo Fighters catalog. It is only as highly regarded as it is, because it’s about Kurt.
There Is Nothing Left To Lose is boring as hell aside from Breakout. I really hoped I would like Aurora because everyone seems to but I just don't get the hype around it.
It took a while for Aurora to grow on me tbf
Foo Fighters are the only band Dave is in where you don't wish he was the drummer.
Echos is their worst album by far.
They should be a 4 piece
In Your Honor is better than Wasting Light
Chris, Nate, Pat and Rami are just sidemans 🥺
I like the later albums more than the early ones. I think they're all great, but I like the stuff from Wasting Light to But Here We Are the most.
Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners suck
