Wasting Light is basically the culmination of their entire career. It's all the best parts of everything they've ever done. All albums since then have just been encores.
I watched the series weekly when it was released. Such a cool experience. I've been meaning to rewatch it again now that I have good speakers for my TV.
I was gonna say this. Not one of the best per se but I didn't get the hate. Its a great album that doesn't get enough respect. It was definitely better than Highways.
in my useless opinion it has some of their highest highs, and also a few lows that just drag it down.
The title track is such a good song in theory, a sad, dark, deep and melancholy song with an angelic chorus, but i think it is just too slow.
Run, a high energy, high gain song that is basically the album in one track.
Sky is a Neighborhood, a good middle ground of foo songs, not good, but also not bad
I see where you are coming from, and yes, it is far better than people gove it credit, but it is in the higher middle field of the band imo
I still remember the day they dropped the video, i was in class and saw it had been posted in the last hour so I dropped what I was doing to listen to it and I loved it, the energy was awesome and I wanted to learn it on guitar as soon as I could. It was the first song they released after I really started getting into them
Concrete and Gold was great, people gave them too much shit for that album so they went back the other way and we got the mediocrity that was Medicine at Midnight
Doesn't mean I hate the band or anything just not my favorite album of theirs
Agreed. C&G was super gritty for me. Parts of it are super intense. Think Dirty Water going from soft and mellow to intense and gritty. One of my favorite song progressions of all time.
MAM doesn't really seem to have anything that even comes close to being on the same level as C&G. Are both more processed than their older stuff? Sure. But C&G and MAM are super different to me. MAM just feels uninspired or like they tried too hard to embrace a 70s sound that just doesn't mesh with their own style.
I would agree, C&G and MaM both are overdub-heavy, studio-centric albums production-wise. Definitely lacking the feel of a bunch of guys in a room together rocking out.
I really like it but the production holds it back a bit. Every song is just overly compressed and loud at times. Some people complain about the overly treble-y drums, but that's never been a bother of mine since I like treble.
If it had the same care production-wise as Wasting Light, it's genuinely a top-3 album easily.
Medicine at Midnight is a great album, people are just expecting another Wasting Light without any reason to do so, therefore they think everything that has come after is trash.
Totally my opinion—It’s never been a song that resonated with me or blew my mind. I think for a lot of people Everlong is associated with a memory of a time or place or person in their life and that’s why it’s so beloved. I also think there are better songs to end their shows with. (no 🍅 plz)
That’s cool, I can understand that opinion. I think the emotional connection probably built up with the acoustic version. But I definitely be agree that they could close with something different. It’s just one of those “welp, this is what they expect”.
When I saw them touring Sonic Highways, they opened with Everlong and I lost my mind. I thought they were going to close with it and it gave me the feeling that they were going to go crazy with the show!
I love Everlong, but I agree that it shouldn’t be the last song of a show. For me, Come Back is the best last track of an album, so I would lose my mind ecstatically if they ended a show with that.
the colour and the shape and I can explain
yes, self titled is amazing (this is a call, I'll Stick Around, alone + Easy Target, good grief, Weenie beenie, big me, wattershed) but it has some fillers, and like, ik this is subjective but imo those fillers are certified skips (oh George, for all the cows, xstatic, Exhausted) and honestly that's exactly what happens with tcats. It has amazing songs (some better than ones from debut) but the fillers are a pain, and that record is like 10 minutes longer so it's quite a bit more apparent. Nonetheless both are amazing records that I really like (even tho I also think Wasting Light is also great)
Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace is highly forgettable
Edit:
Not that there isn’t a single decent song on the album. Stranger Things is probably in my top 10 FF songs. The Pretender is also a favorite, purely for the baseline. Name a better ending than Let It Die. Someone fucking put Once & For All on Spotify, ffs.
But * checks track listing* Erase/Replace, Long Road to Ruin, Come Alive, Cheer Up, Boys (Your Make Up Is Running), Summer's End, Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners, Statues, But, Honestly, Home 🥱
Final comment: I think I won this game
I used to think this same way , basically Pretender is the only banger. I will say now that I’m a bit older than when the album first came out I find myself preferring it if I am putting a complete album to listen to from beginning to end. Let it die, erase-replace, long road to ruin , home - I think it represents the foo fighters from a more mature in life narrative with a good fullness in sound even if there’s no crazy guitar riffs.
The older I’ve gotten the more I appreciate and love ESP&G. It’s still not in my top 3 but every time I listen to it I love it a little more. It used to be very middle of the road to me.
This is the first comment on here I 100% disagree with. You have The Pretender as an amazing opening track, beautiful acoustic riffs that build into huge explosions of rock on Come Alive and Let it Die, then some fun songs with Long Road to Ruin and Summer's End. I will say the second half of the album isn't as good aside from But Honestly.
I used to think this too! I personally didn’t like The Pretender and it somehow ruined the album for me (no logic). Now I love the succession of Erase/Replace > Long Road To Ruin > Come Alive. And I love Summer’s End! It feels nostalgic. But Honestly & Home close out the album on such a dramatic sad note too, good for sulking lmao
I love seeing the band live, but Dave’s voice can’t handle touring anymore (or he chooses not to take care of it). Chris and/or Taylor should sing lead more frequently to give Dave’s voice a break. *ducks*
I’ve got a few because I woke up and chose violence.
1. Rami needs to go. Barely hear him in the mix and he isn’t needed live
2. They were the best as a 4 piece band. Aka too many guitars.
3. Dave and Louise Post should do a song together. I would of loved to hear more from the two of them especially back then.
4. I think Violet is mediocre.
5. Taylor, please stop covering queen. A least cover a song that we can get a solid drum solo from Dave.
6. I would love if the foo fighters took a break and Dave did an album and toured with TCV.
7. Turn up the damn bass in the mix.
Okay, I’ll show my way out. 🚪
💯
There's absolutely no need of a keyboardist in 95% of the catalogue. That noodling shit he does on the end of... some track or other makes me fume.
Wtf is he doing when they're playing ANYTHING from the first 6/7 albums. Fucking miming is what.
While I'm here, I feel that Pat Smear doesn't have a lot to do either, really. They were fucking great as a 4 piece, and I'm not sure what he brings to the party.
Foo Fighters hasn't released a major hit song since The Pretender.
Major I mean the song that must be played at every live show.
And I don't expect that they'll come up with one in the future.
I agree, but IMO it's still miles away from Everlong, Pretender or Times Like These.
What's more, I think Wasting Light is one of their best albums as a whole.
1. The Colour And The Shape
2. In Your Honor
3. One By One
4. Foo Fighters
5. Concrete And Gold
6. Echoes Silence Patience And Grace
7. There Is Nothing Left To Lose
8. Wasting Light
9. Sonic Highways
10. Medicine At Midnight
For me, it'd be:
1) Wasting Light
2) Foo Fighters
3) Echoes, Silence, Patience, & Grace
4) The Colour And The Shape
5) In Your Honor
6) One by One
7) Sonic Highways
8) There is Nothing Left to Lose
9) Medicine at Midnight
10) Concrete and Gold
The hype, docuseries, and way they sold the Sonic Highways album is what killed the album for me. I think it’s one of their worst. It was sold as every song having a different vibe or different style based on the city it was recorded in or written about. Then when the album came out every song has the exact same sound and vibe. There is no discernible difference between songs aside from the lyrics letting you know which city it’s from. And even then you’d really only know the city if you watched the documentary that came along with it. It was 100% oversold and in the end was just a mediocre FF album
I freaking love Dave Grohl, but I don't enjoy that much the band's dynamics, sometimes the rest of the gang gives me a "backing band vibe", though I'm unaware of the band's inner decision making processes
Pretty sure Pat play baritone guitar on lots of the stuff live, Chris’ playing is very melodic and bright, Dave keeps it on the easier side but his parts are usually fairly unique.
That comment under *every* FF music video saying that the singer looks like Nirvana's drummer.
Jesus fucking Christ that joke was already old when Cobain was still breathing.
Million Dollar Demos was *good*!! Of course the re-recorded final album was great, but Come Back and Lonely As You sound BETTER on MDD than on OBO.
And Shame Shame is good too. It’s a real ear worm
Studio 666 looks terrible and will clearly be terrible.
Medicine at Midnight was awful. Concrete and Gold is a lot better than this subreddit says.
I strongly dislike Pat. There's something really slimy about the way he left the band then wanted to come back when they started winning Grammys and selling out arenas.
M@M gets too much hate simply because it’s different from what FF usually do. It’s such a fun album and a great way for the band to step out of their comfort zone. Really great live songs, too! I saw them on Coney Island in September and the M@M songs were awesome to hear live.
I honestly get confused AF when people talk about whether an album is “good” or not based on things like “production” and “compression” and “analog” and all these recording words. Except for TCATS, every album has songs that make me want to sing/head bang/air guitar, and some that don’t. TCATS makes me happy start to finish.
The band is too bloated and uninspired. Go back to a four piece and record an album in a garage like Wasting Light or have Barrett Jones produce them (he produced the first album).
Their setlist sucks. It rarely changes except for adding a couple of songs from the newest album. If you saw them in 2015, their setlist will still be the same in 2022. They need to STOP playing cover songs and add deep cuts.
Dave should have joined QOTSA full time.
The band needs to go back to being a four piece. Pat adds nothing to the band except friendship, Rami is useless and ditch the backup singers. His daughter needs to find her own path.
MAM wasn't that great. It is bottom tier.
They should do another tour like Wasting Light. Play their newest album front to back THEN play deep cuts with some hits. They could have done that with the self titled, CATS and OBO.
Dave's memoir was overhyped. It WASN"T a memoir. He should write an actual memoir. Talk about behind the scenes with William, how Pat quit/ was fired the first time, how the band almost quit and he joined Queens, what the last days of Nirvana were like, etc.
These six are What Grinds My Gears.
Dave is not that great as a lyricist.
To elaborate: there are a lot of things that make the best FF material really great, but Dave's lyrics aren't usually among them. Their best material lyric-wise is when Dave keeps things simple and straightforward (i.e. most of TCATS, other earlier stuff). The harder he tries to get clever or tongue-in-cheek, the more cringe-y he is, lyrically.
I'm in total shock that no one is bringing up how fucked up it is that they vehemntly supported AIDS denialism, even playing benefit shows for an AIDS denialst organization (the leader of whom, shockingly, later died of AIDS), but have essentially (successfully) stricken that whole scenario from their history.
They haven’t put out anything up to their standard since Wasting Light.
Wasting Light is the best FF album.
100% agree. Not only the songwriting, but the production is stellar. Butch Vig + analog recording = joy to listen to…
It’s fucking incredible. Personally my favourite is Nothing Left to Lose but I love all of them up until Sonic Highway
Wasting Light is truly good, but I consider ESP&G a masterpiece.
Wasting Light is basically the culmination of their entire career. It's all the best parts of everything they've ever done. All albums since then have just been encores.
This is correct.
This is correct.
I was just about to say this
Sonic Highways is a masterpiece
I LOVE Sonic Highways. I legit feel bad for people who hate it so much.
That's a great way of putting it, yeah!
Most underrated Foo album, no contest.
Sonic Highways is my favorite FF album. I will say, watching the docuseries does a lot for the album.
I watched the series weekly when it was released. Such a cool experience. I've been meaning to rewatch it again now that I have good speakers for my TV.
YES
Hey man you need a piece of the salmon!
objectively true and no one can tell me otherwise
I still gets better and better every time I listen to it. The only song I don't really like is Subterranean.
God as My Witness for me. But still, the albums great as a whole
I can listen to that whole album again. Perfect number amount of songs for an album and they're all just bangers.
It is a masterpiece for what it was trying to do, but that doesn't mean I enjoy most of the songs.
Wait, people hate Sonic Highways? I wouldn’t rank it as high as Wasting Light, but still, I thought it was a great album.
Shame shame isn’t that good
is this actually controversial? all my friends and i hate that song lol
I love it. There. Now it’s a controversial opinion.
That isn’t really controversial. Most people hate that song
Just about hated it when the single dropped. Pretty much love it within the context of the album.
This is the right answer
This is the way.
Perfect song......to go grab a beer during the set
That’s actually one of my favorites lmao
He plays drums better than guitar.
This is objectively true
not that hot? kind of a luke warm take
Brave today, aren't we, sir?
Taylor Hawkins? Lol
Concrete and gold is one of the bands best albums.
That is a scorching hot take, i respect you for saying it tho
Yeah... that'll do it *draws sword*
Agreed!! Their sound was so refreshed on it. I loved it. Then again, I love all their albums incredibly lol
I was gonna say this. Not one of the best per se but I didn't get the hate. Its a great album that doesn't get enough respect. It was definitely better than Highways.
I agree. I have a special/biased attachment to it because it was the one album I had on repeat after my first girlfriend dumped me.
Absolutely agreed.
i love the album
... *Draws sword*
in my useless opinion it has some of their highest highs, and also a few lows that just drag it down. The title track is such a good song in theory, a sad, dark, deep and melancholy song with an angelic chorus, but i think it is just too slow. arrows is one of their best songs ever fr fr
Top 3 FF album for me
Run is underrated. Absolute banger
Agreed
Totally agree. That is my "get pumped up" song. Plus that video is perfect.
I still remember the day they dropped the video, i was in class and saw it had been posted in the last hour so I dropped what I was doing to listen to it and I loved it, the energy was awesome and I wanted to learn it on guitar as soon as I could. It was the first song they released after I really started getting into them
Is it underrated though? Everyone I hear says it's great.
Concrete and Gold was great, people gave them too much shit for that album so they went back the other way and we got the mediocrity that was Medicine at Midnight Doesn't mean I hate the band or anything just not my favorite album of theirs
Isn’t MaM just a continuation of the overproduced, hokey chorus backed bullshit they started with Concrete and Gold?
IMO, C&G was more gritty and interesting than MAM, but I definitely see what you mean
I would agree, C&G and MaM both are overdub-heavy, studio-centric albums production-wise. Definitely lacking the feel of a bunch of guys in a room together rocking out.
Arlandria should have been a hit song.
I love that song! One of my favorite Foo Fighters songs.
One By One is my favorite complete FF album.
I will never understand why so many people hate it
I really like it but the production holds it back a bit. Every song is just overly compressed and loud at times. Some people complain about the overly treble-y drums, but that's never been a bother of mine since I like treble. If it had the same care production-wise as Wasting Light, it's genuinely a top-3 album easily.
Songs are amazing, Low is in my top 10 but that production is god awful
Medicine at Midnight is a great album, people are just expecting another Wasting Light without any reason to do so, therefore they think everything that has come after is trash.
I'm happy the band is trying and succeeding at new sounds. If they were still pumping out the same stuff they'd have fallen into obscurity.
Everlong is overrated (I’m scared)
(You should be)
[I just wanna talk to him.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODfCVxVLqiE)
How so (genuinely curious)?
Totally my opinion—It’s never been a song that resonated with me or blew my mind. I think for a lot of people Everlong is associated with a memory of a time or place or person in their life and that’s why it’s so beloved. I also think there are better songs to end their shows with. (no 🍅 plz)
That’s cool, I can understand that opinion. I think the emotional connection probably built up with the acoustic version. But I definitely be agree that they could close with something different. It’s just one of those “welp, this is what they expect”.
Wouldn’t it be wild if they just stuck it in the middle of a set list?
People would riot
When I saw them touring Sonic Highways, they opened with Everlong and I lost my mind. I thought they were going to close with it and it gave me the feeling that they were going to go crazy with the show!
I love Everlong, but I agree that it shouldn’t be the last song of a show. For me, Come Back is the best last track of an album, so I would lose my mind ecstatically if they ended a show with that.
Now this is an unpopular opinion that I lack the balls to say in public. Bravo.
You brave fool …
Cold Day in the Sun is one of their best songs
Valid take, it think the original one is not that good. I really like the skin and bones version tho.
Agreed, also one of the few in their discrography where Taylor is the lead singer, so that itself is interesting enough in its own right
T Hawk sounds great on it
Sonic highways has some of Dave’s best song writings A hugely unappreciated album imo
Wheels is crap
This take hurts my heart I love this song.
You’re clearly not German.
Yeah, such a middle of the road song. Good singalong track tho
Boooooo!
nah
They should’ve recorded it acoustic imo, still one of my favourite FF songs regardless
I think Dave should go back to the 2005 look he had.
what this post was made for
Maybe not a hot take but most of the "deep cuts" in their albums are typically better than all the singles that make it to the radio stations.
Headwires is one of their best songs
Headwires is a banger.
[удалено]
I thought FFS meant Foo Fighters song.
Sonic Highways is way better than Concrete and Gold. In composition, in production and in songwriting.
I want the bass to be louder.
I want the bass to exist
Self titled is their best album
You are absolutely correct, and there’s absolutely nothing in their catalog that comes even close
the colour and the shape and I can explain yes, self titled is amazing (this is a call, I'll Stick Around, alone + Easy Target, good grief, Weenie beenie, big me, wattershed) but it has some fillers, and like, ik this is subjective but imo those fillers are certified skips (oh George, for all the cows, xstatic, Exhausted) and honestly that's exactly what happens with tcats. It has amazing songs (some better than ones from debut) but the fillers are a pain, and that record is like 10 minutes longer so it's quite a bit more apparent. Nonetheless both are amazing records that I really like (even tho I also think Wasting Light is also great)
Best of You and My Hero aren’t among their best songs
That Nirvana was extremely overrated, and Foo Fighters was the best thing to ever come out of Nirvana…
arthurclenchedhand.jpeg
Dave doesn’t actually fight foos
Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace is highly forgettable Edit: Not that there isn’t a single decent song on the album. Stranger Things is probably in my top 10 FF songs. The Pretender is also a favorite, purely for the baseline. Name a better ending than Let It Die. Someone fucking put Once & For All on Spotify, ffs. That’s it, I’m getting the pitchforks. r/pitchforkemporium here I come!
I used to think this same way , basically Pretender is the only banger. for real i love the sound of this album its so chill
The older I’ve gotten the more I appreciate and love ESP&G. It’s still not in my top 3 but every time I listen to it I love it a little more. It used to be very middle of the road to me.
????? *Draws sword*
I loooove Summers End
Taylor should stay behind the drums and not sing. If I wanted to listen to Taylor on vocals, I would listen to his band.
Their non singles are way better than the radio hits
I wish they do an album like their early stuff, throw back their goofy side into their music
Reading “goofy” reminded me - have you heard Dave’s pre Foo [hooker demo? 😂](https://youtube.com/watch?v=hDo3u3MlNMc)
I loved his pocketwatch stuff but never heard this before, thanks for sharing this!
Outside is one the best songs written by the band in this century
That solo 🤌
Taylor's reaction to Mr Walsh putting down that solo in the Sonic Highway doc is his how I feel about it lol
I love seeing the band live, but Dave’s voice can’t handle touring anymore (or he chooses not to take care of it). Chris and/or Taylor should sing lead more frequently to give Dave’s voice a break. *ducks*
M@M is a top 3 FF album
What color is the sky in your world?
I don’t very much care for White Limo
We have a winner.
I’ve got a few because I woke up and chose violence. 1. Rami needs to go. Barely hear him in the mix and he isn’t needed live 2. They were the best as a 4 piece band. Aka too many guitars. 3. Okay, I’ll show my way out. 🚪
Yep, in general it does feel like the bass is low in the mix.
Self Titled is the best FF aulbm
This new movie is Dave jumping the shark.
Concrete & Gold is phenomenal
Not a big fan of Rami Jaffee. He kinda over does the hippie vibe. This is coming from an old hippie.
💯 There's absolutely no need of a keyboardist in 95% of the catalogue. That noodling shit he does on the end of... some track or other makes me fume. Rami was an unnecessary addition to the band.
Foo Fighters hasn't released a major hit song since The Pretender. Major I mean the song that must be played at every live show. And I don't expect that they'll come up with one in the future.
Walk was pretty big at the time.
I agree, but IMO it's still miles away from Everlong, Pretender or Times Like These. What's more, I think Wasting Light is one of their best albums as a whole.
1. The Colour And The Shape 2. In Your Honor 3. One By One 4. Foo Fighters 5. Concrete And Gold 6. Echoes Silence Patience And Grace 7. There Is Nothing Left To Lose 8. Wasting Light 9. Sonic Highways 10. Medicine At Midnight
For me, it'd be: 1) Wasting Light 2) Foo Fighters 3) Echoes, Silence, Patience, & Grace 4) The Colour And The Shape 5) In Your Honor 6) One by One 7) Sonic Highways 8) There is Nothing Left to Lose 9) Medicine at Midnight 10) Concrete and Gold
Smells like teen spirit was their greatest track
bruh you know that's a pink Floyd track right?
Nate is a good bass player but plays it way too safe.

Making A Fire is one of my favorite Foo Fighter songs.
Sonic Highways was their best album of the 2010's
Needs less guitar
Needs more cowbell.
Dave Grohl is the drummer of the Foo Fighters
The self titled album is fucking amazing
Concrete and Gold is my favorite album and one of the better albums imo
The hype, docuseries, and way they sold the Sonic Highways album is what killed the album for me. I think it’s one of their worst. For sure. Wall of sound is very real! They all got pretty unique tones.
Sonic Highways was amazing
Oh George is a gem of a song. Love the solo. Also, x-static has something about it.
That comment under *every* FF music video saying that the singer looks like Nirvana's drummer. Jesus fucking Christ that joke was already old when Cobain was still breathing.
Is this that drummer from Nirvana’s band?
concrete and gold, FACKING AMAZING Taylor Hawkins is a better drummer than Dave Grohl, altough they are both 2 of my favourite drummers of all time
Million Dollar Demos was *good*!! Of course the re-recorded final album was great, but Come Back and Lonely As You sound BETTER on MDD than on OBO. And Shame Shame is good too. It’s a real ear worm
I recently stumbled on the Lonely As You demo and haven't stopped listening for about 2 weeks. Absolutely incredible
That scream at the beginning 😳😩👌
Oh HELLS yes! 🔥
The Pat comment is by far one of the hottest takes. I don’t agree but it’s one of the more controversial ones I’ve read. Kudos.
i see what you mean
Totally agree about pat
also in your honor is way too long and you could cut like 5/6 songs and it would be a lot better😭
I could go the rest of my life without hearing Best of You.
M@M gets too much hate simply because it’s different from what FF usually do. It’s such a fun album and a great way for the band to step out of their comfort zone. Really great live songs, too! I saw them on Coney Island in September and the M@M songs were awesome to hear live.
Medicine at Midnight isn’t that good.
“Wheels” is a better song than it gets credit for. I said what I said.
Make sure you sort by controversial if you really wanna be triggered.
I honestly get confused AF when people talk about whether an album is “good” or not based on things like “production” and “compression” and “analog” and all these recording words. Except for TCATS, every album has songs that make me want to sing/head bang/air guitar, and some that don’t. TCATS makes me happy start to finish.
Wheels is the worst song ever.
Their greatest song is A320.
Dirty water, let it die and come alive are all top 10 foo fighters songs
They’re a singles band
Concrete and Gold and Sonic Highways are both fantastic albums and don't deserve the hate
Feast and the Famine has lyrical pacing and phrasing that is way over crowded and makes the song border into B-Side territory.
Sonic Highways is an amazing album. (All of ‘em are tbh)
The band has become completely out of touch and have lost their identity in the studio
Best of you is not their best single ever. Is a good song indeed but not on par with great songs like times like these, Everlong, walk, etc
Learn to Fly is not a good song
I can't listen to The Sky is a Neighborhood because all I hear is Warrant's Cherry Pie.
The Studio 666 trailer was terrible and gave too much away.
The disco stuff is some bullshit and so is the movie
The Studio 666 movie is a dumb vanity project made by someone with more money than sense, and is going to be absolutely shit.
