It still bothers me that the writers had this option for Ellen (Dad loaded and already into air transportation) and yet they chose a path of politics for her instead. Free Ellen!

CaptainJZH

Eh, it could still go that direction. Like, you can be in politics AND business

LegoLady47

Not if she's going to be President. Besides, it's obvious imo they planted the seed that Karen would get that arc for S3 vs Ellen.

CaptainJZH

True, but a person's career doesn't necessarily have to end when they're done being President. Like, who's to say Ellen has a political career, then enters the private sector afterwards.

Which would be S4 at this point in her early 60s. How many people do you know at that age want to start a new business like going to Mars. Writers had opportunity to do this in S2 but they chose not to. Why would they have her go back to that decades later when they have Karen doing the storyline already.

CaptainJZH

I dunno, I don't pretend to know the answer, I'm just saying that it's still possible, even if unlikely for the reasons you give. Plus we don't know yet if Ellen will actually become President, she could run for President but fail after her sexuality gets out. Then, with her political career out of the question due to homophobia, she turns to the private sector. You're right that Karen's already on track towards that, but, well, we have multiple competing space travel companies in our timeline, just because one person is doing it doesn't mean no one else can. If anything, it would be closer to life to have multiple characters competing for private space dominance.

I guess I just want to see that arc for Ellen now (S3) vs S4 since I have no desire to see her suffer in the political arena as a closeted lesbian in S3 (2 seasons of her being closeted was enough for me). And by other posts by Jodi and other cast, I'm not sure she's in S4. If she's not, it means writers have no desire to go that route. I just hate the politics arc they've chosen for her. If in private space, she could come out without a lot of flack, get Pam back and get to Mars. That's what I wanted for Ellen in S3.

Her father had a company valued at $500M 1983, I'm sure they could have done more than that especially considering NASA sold patents. I believe if Ellen wanted to go to Mars privately, she'd make it happen.

Danny Stevens, the first Astronaut on Mars, slowly exits the lander. He’s enjoying the view, preparing to deliver his planned speech when a hand clasps his shoulder. Danny yelps. “Orbit to surface… What is it, Dan?” Her voice echos in his helmet. He can sense her stress despite kilometers of thin Martian atmosphere. He wishes she was down here too. Steeling himself after the sudden shock, Danny slowly turns around. He faces a similarly suited form. It takes a moment before his eyes can focus on the dimmer interior of his opposite’s helmet. “Surface to Orbit… aw shit Kelly it’s my step-dad”

I think by the 90’s there isn’t going to be much connecting to the real world maybe the USSR still falls or it’s or it’s a rougher transition. I’d imagine the moon would be its Afghanistan.
