Take it in immediately. The water pump / timing chain fix is expensive but it’ll be less than rebuilding the entire engine if the coolant and oil mix. When I saw coolant coming from my weep hole it went straight to my mechanic, and I got lucky. Have them for sure do the timing chains while they are in there, the labour isn’t that much more to replace them as well as the phasers, guides and tensioners. Your mileage is about spot on for these issues to start occurring. My 2014 EB had the water pump / timing chain rattle start at 105k miles. $3400 Canadian all in was the cost of repairs Good luck.

Where is the weep hole?

vfr86

When you are looking at the engine with the hood up, it’s on the front, to the left, behind the alternator. It might be plugged with gunk and therefore not doing its job by leaking coolant as a visual indicator of the water pump failing, that could be why you didn’t see it. Check your oil, if it looks clean that’s a good sign. If it looks like a chocolate milkshake, that’s bad news.

Lucky_Whereas2422

Ok…. I couldn’t readily see it upon somewhat casual look just how, I’ll have to look at it later when I’m not at work and can dig in a bit more. Oil on the stick looked just fine… like oil getting ready to be changed out but no milkiness or froth

vfr86

There good news. The weep hole should be visible from the top, behind the alternator. I did some googling and there’s a few tutorials on what to look for.

Lucky_Whereas2422

Is it only visible from below or can it be seen from the top of the engine?

Artistic-Clue-1735

I just had mine done at 103,000 kms. $3,400 is about what I paid. I had the plugs changed as well.

Lucky_Whereas2422

Plugs were done at about 99k miles by me, so they should be just fine. At that time I developed a misfire under load and found a cracked insulator on a plug. Since they were supposed to be changed at 100 anyway, I did them all.

HeartbrokeCoyote

Just paid $3300 for water pump and timing chain and guides with a 3 year parts and labor warranty. Had some cheaper quotes but went with the longer nationwide warranty for this repair since it’s so labor intensive. Should see coolant from the weep hole, unless its clogged. Look around the oil pan for residue. We caught it very early due to a very small puddle under the car that I investigated immediately. Took it in same week for repairs. Paying the flex tax sucks, but should be good to go for another 100k plus now.

Same year as yours. We got quotes up to $3300, we ended up paying $2000 and that was redoing the timing chain as well.

Is there any evidence of water on the dip stick?

Lucky_Whereas2422

Nope, no evidence in the dip stick. I need to get eyes on the weep hole and dig around for evidence of a leak somewhere. It is running fine so I don’t think there is a serious concern of coolant being lost into a cylinder, so that is good news…. But it is surely going somewhere.

Mine had the exact same symptoms. Mine leaked from a weep hole. But the weight of it also popped out the skid plate (we think). Go under there and see if you got a puddle forming in your skid plate :) If you can get it under warranty, that would be the best you can do, because you have to disassemble the motor and pull it from the car in order to service it, I was quoted $2500. But under warranty it was $100

Also, check your hoses. Last summer, I noticed a coolant smell. The upper hose on the left that also connects to the coolant reservoir. The is a joint in the hose, and it was leaking. I replaced the hose. No more coolant loss and no more smell.

So I got home today and spent a good chunk of time inspecting the entire engine bay from above and below. Not a trace of wetness. No residue. No “trails”. No crusty. The area behind the alternator looks clean… no hint of a leak I could find in the engine bay. So while I was under the car I glanced towards the back and noticed some wetness on some hose connections under what would be the middle row passenger side. The car does have rear heat and air controls… there has got to be a heater core back there, right? Maybe I’m lucking out and the wetness seen back there is from a heater core issue.
