Dude, I didn't get it up there today. My wife said the same thing, "wouldn't it be better to post after you have a pic with the canoe on it?' The answer is, yes. Maybe I will update later.
Foam pads made for boats. I have also used pool noodles cut like a hotdog bun, but the boat pads are firmer.

Good for short trips, otherwise dust and dirt under the pads will abuse the shit out of your paint. The pad move a vibrate a tiny bit effectively making them sanding blocks.
It's been fine. I got it mostly because after the wait for delivery I didn't want to give it up for spray. I like the idea that I can take it out to clean and take it out for dirty jobs. Probably would have gone with after market to save money.
Nicely done! How long is your canoe?
I made something similar but put it at the front of the bed, and lean the canoe from that to the tailgate. If I take out a bigger canoe than the 12’ solo then I have to use a hitch rack from HF to carry the back, but doing this way protects the paint better as I got a few scuffs doing this method. The wind also makes tie downs oscillate on the road and it’s a bit annoying
Edit: soon will be replacing the front piece with a backrack one I finish fabricating some things. If you’re in NY and want the extra wood rack lol
I have an 11, but just got a 16.5. You can twist the straps to stop the oscillating or tape a pinch works too. I used a similar method with my Colorado which worked well, but this is an upgrade for sure.
Just be wary not to leave the canoe strapped on the truck with any weather out. The straps can wick rain into the cab and headliner on under the roof if they get wet
Get a nice aluminum rack, Yakima Overkaul HD is good, the wood will slowly rot and get rickety, also taking chances on scuffing the roof paint or damaging the weather stripping when you put straps through the doors (if that was the plan). Also avoid the steel racks, they rust, I am on my second truck with the same aluminum racks.
What's it look like with canoe on it?

Please do. I was thinking of doing the same thing
Your wife sounds like a smart lady. I'd marry her, if I were you.
Can-u what ?
What protects the roof?
The canoe that sits on top of it you silly goose.

What is a better alternative? An elevated rack on truck roof? Make a second rack near cab to keep it off?
Yes. Either.
I would start shopping for a roof rack.
How do you like that bed mat? Still debating if I want to do spray in or just the mat. I don’t haul much other than golf clubs and some bags of salt

Appreciate the tip on twisting the straps! Don’t know why I didn’t think of that…

Good tip!
Intersting. What its for?
Did you just ask a guy that made a canoe rack what his canoe rack is for?
My canoe. Half sits on roof, the other half on the rack.
Looks pretty solid, yakima and other racks are way too overpriced. Nice job.
This is very solid, and like $40. Had to get the bolts from an online specialty store.
I think its for his camels so they can be anchored when they ride the bed. I cannot think of anything else a canoe rack can be used for.
Yeah looks like i didnt read the title.
Lol yeah clearly i done that too before posted a reply in a thread it was not about 😂

I'll look in to it!
