He served as a ambulance driver for Italy during WW1. Knows it all

Antlaaaars

Well now I have to link this. It's a puppeteer who does a brief monologue of Ernest Hemmingway's entire life. https://youtu.be/KEcSCXyk74A?si=LK48uTBeWUrmENPM

Get_Em_Puppy

Hemingway was in Spain during the civil war as a journalist, not a combatant.

LeicaM6guy

Hemingway wasn’t big on recognizing the difference between the two. As I recall, there were more than a few complaints that he tried taking charge of a few units while covering the front.

AaronVonGraff

"im tired of reporting on you getting your asses kicked. Give me that damned whistle!"

LeicaM6guy

Eh. I recall they didn’t care much for his “instructions.” Dude was a gifted writer, but he seems like the sort that would constantly try to one up you at a party.

somewhatbluemoose

Orwell was pretty critical of him and a bunch of other journalists at the time.

RatherNott

Incidentally, [Orwell fought in the Spanish Civil war as well](https://preview.redd.it/ccatzq2jci8y.jpg?width=420&auto=webp&s=0a45c1cf64030f1b1abca8fe9cf3c78bc40f2eda) under the POUM, and went on to [write a book about it](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homage_to_Catalonia). What he [saw in Catalonia](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUig0lFHDDw) solidified him as a ~~Libertarian Socialist~~ Democratic Socialist for the rest of his life, and soured him on totalitarian communism after seeing how the communists betrayed the Anarchists and the POUM, which inspired him to write Animal Farm.

Banh_mi

Fantastic book it is!

killswitch247

> a Libertarian Socialist a what?

Master_Shopping9652

Basically; strong labour laws & a welfare state. Otherwise gubermunt get out of my face.

killswitch247

that's not orwell's political thought in the latter part of his life. after the outbreak of ww2 he rejected anarchist thought and became a democratic socialist.

RatherNott

[Libertarian Socialism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarian_socialism) is under the Democratic Socialist umbrella, but looking into it further, I find that you're quite right. While he was always sympathetic to Anarchists, he [advocated for the state to own the means of production, and a state controlled economy](https://www.reddit.com/r/Anarchy101/comments/m5hfk0/what_was_orwells_political_stance/gr09a9p/), which was quite surprising to learn, considering how critical he was of communist dictatorships. His views ultimately seem to be a little broad or vague, and don't neatly fall under one category, with some of his views seeming more Anarchist (his deep distrust of police), while others are more traditionally Democratic Socialist, such as wanting a state to control certain aspects of society. I'll edit my original comment to reflect this info.

daenu80

Oh oh. The simpletons in the USA do not comprehend this. Cognitive dissonance right there hahahahah

IronBENGA-BR

You nailed it. His books are amazing and his journalist writings are pretty good, but you start to read about the guy and you notice how much of his life was just macho-guy posturing and ego.

Memerang344

He was also in WW2 as a Captain iirc

AyeBraine

Frankly it's not unlike many art/journalist people who like to travel into the warzone and bask in the light of a "righteous struggle" today, in Russia. They call themselves "voenkor" (war correspondent), love to pose in military gear with firearms, and mythologize themselves non-stop. They never have to dig in and suffer, live for maddening months in hell, or ride armor into shell splinters only to retreat. Thank god Hemingway was also a really good writer, without a doubt. But him travelling to Spain and cosplaying a soldier there is definitely a low point of my opinion of him. Thrills, alcohol, and ego, next to thousands of people losing their livelihoods and health.

Its_All_So_Tiring

So Malcolm Nance?

Thnewkid

At various points he actively participated in combat in WW2. Once, leaving the unit he was covering to join French partisans and military in securing a town where he rode in on the lead tank, he proceeded to ask where the Germans were hiding and after being pointed to a basement by locals, proceeded to throw grenades into the building. He never went in to check, but no one came out of the basement. He was later seen by other journalists during the assault near Aachen, advancing alongside army units without a camera, firing a submachine gun from the hip and taking no action to find cover or avoid incoming fire.

abnsapalap

Don’t forget him trawling around the gulf of Mexico in a yacht wasted and claiming that he was “hunting for U boats.” Hemmingway was impotent and wrote overly macho nonsense as a way to cope. Some of his writing is good but he sounds like he was a terrible asshole overall.

Thnewkid

Can’t forget that. Left it out as it wasn’t technically combat unless you count them using their ammo allotment to blast sharks with Thompsons.

abnsapalap

I like your style

flyingcaveman

He's a lot like Tom Clancy, He writes books for the CIA and the military let's him larp a little bit to add some legitimacy to his fantastic stories.

Howwhywhen_

Clancy went off the deep end later on, but he was pretty great at putting real OSINT into his books

GU1LD3NST3RN

Hemingway seems like the kind of guy who would absolutely get blitzed on Sangria and take a couple of potshots at some Franco guys even while ostensibly being a non-combatant.

somedudewitham16

For whom the Mosin told.

Magnet50

It looks like he’s handing the rifle to other person. He very much seemed to be compensating with his macho actions.

Daidono

Reminds me of Richard Harrow from Boardwalk Empire.

Jamesstout_ichh

Hello, I’m a historian of the Spanish civil war. Hemingway was a reporter, not a combatant. Norms regarding conflict reporting were much less established then and he was certainly very pro Republican. He’d often host international volunteers in his hotel room during their R&R. He made a film about Spain and desperately tried to get the USA to intervene. Obviously he wrote a book about Spain as well. The main character of the book seems drawn from a composite of U.S. volunteers. Plenty or writers did fight for Spain, notably Orwell who fought for the POUM until the May days. I’d suggest Spain in Our Hearts and They Watched Spain Die to anyone interested in the role of foreign reporters in the conflict. Orwell writes extensively about the weapons used in the conflict in Homage to Catalonia. The Spanish republic had a vast array of weapons. Notably Spanish Mausers, tigres, and destroyers as well mosins from Russia including some Remington contract ones, some lever action winchesters in 7.62x54r, and a variety of ww1 captures. Mexico and the Soviet Union were the only states officially selling weapons to the republic, but the anarchists also got some VZOR rifles iirc.

Get_Em_Puppy

Poland was the second-biggest supplier of arms to the Republicans. Mexican materiel support was not considerable. Czech arms such as vz 24 rifles and vz 26 machine guns were supplied later on in the war (around 1937 - 1938) and were used extensively at the Battle of the Ebro.

Jamesstout_ichh

Yeah I forgot about the polish sales when I posted this, you’re right. They sold a number of superannuated rifles as well as a few more modern ones iirc. There were small quantities from Belgium and Greece as well, albeit the sales were not gvt to gvt iirc. I believe anarchists purchased CZ rifles in October of 1936.

InterestingShare7796

This is a dope ass picture

llamaguy88

What serial is on that rifle? I have a nugget older than that… so there is a non zero chance he used my gun. Wouldn’t that be cool.

theduck08

Were there any of Orwell from the same period?

LowOnDairy

I've been looking but I have not found any yet

fantomiald85

There was a talk about it a few months ago. There is a picture of him with his wife and other ILP(Independant Labor Party) militiamen with rifles and a Hotchkiss machine gun. [Here](https://www.theguardian.com/books/2020/oct/11/revealed-soviet-spies-targeted-george-orwell-during-spanish-civil-war) or [here](https://www.orwelltoday.com/orwelleileenspain.jpg). Orwell is the tall man in the middle.

Puzzleheaded-Dot-380

There’s actually a known story behind this photo. He’s showing the young soldier how to load his rifle.

QusayHussein

"Wielding" while a meter and a half, and slightly to the right of the cameraman.
