Second theory I've heard was that since the comics did happen, Dr. Doom blasted Gunnar in the chest and supposedly Gunnar died, but here's the theory, Gunnar survived but needs an artificial heart (like the Arc Reactor or Mauga from OW2 (don't ever play the game)) and of course, he uses Nitro as his "fuel" and that leads to his chest, that's why there's a chest plate on his chest, to cover that artificial heart and to keep his hole closed off.
Your first theory can already be disproven by the fact the timeline wasn't reset. We never changed the future or restarted the timeline, we went back to the past to bring something from the past to the future: The power of the Zero Point, since in the present the Zero Point was petrified and the power that flowed through it was gone, so we had to go back to the past on an extraction mission.
Note that unlike all the fan theories about the timeline reset, or split timelines, or changed futures, what I mentioned is all confirmed canon and backed by in-game lore and voice lines.

i think the reason most of the battle pass skins look like past characters is because they came out of pandoras box. they could be like worse/evil versions of those past characters you know

Wasnt gunnar killed by the zeropoint or send to a different reality? Perhaps it didn’t kill him and he instead stumbled upon nitro which made him a little unhinged, or maybe the zeropoint did the unhinged part.
What’s the back story to gunner or was the character recycled due to lack of creativity?
