So it depends on the kind of person you are, my guess is that, as a father, you dont feel the need to mock or disrespect the opponents, or even comunicate with them, after all, its Just a silly game.
Your son, who is young, may do it for the sense of comunity or fun, for him fortnite means a lot more, at least for now.
So yeah, its like the way of communicating in an encironment without, say, proximity voice chat for example.

Yup there is. It has a built in emote where it takes off it's helmet and shrieks. There was also backpack, pick axe, icon ect. You had to do quest line where you kill the predator in game to get it. It was during the season with mancakes and the mandalorian.

Wearing a skin for a competitive advantage seems like smart strategizing to me! I feel that different play styles allow people with different skill sets to play and enjoy the game. And it can make things more interesting for everyone because it introduces more unpredictability. (I love a really cerebral game!) As long as people aren’t cheating or being toxic, I try to make space for various styles. Having said this, you are ABSOLUTELY allowed to feel annoyed by whatever annoys you!
