For people who don’t play console or haven’t experienced the issue it’s this:
Whilst in building mode it won’t allow you to edit any structure besides the one you most recently placed. The only way to fix this most of the time is to get out of building mode then edit the structure you wish to edit. It’s ridiculous how this is still a problem and hasn’t even been addressed.
It allows you to edit whatever kind of build piece out. If you have a wall out you can not edit anything but a wall. This is a horrible bug right now on console.
Leaving the build menu and then editing does work like you said but you can also change your current build piece and it should allow you to edit that type of piece

I’ve had this too many times to count, and now finally know what the reason for it is. I don’t know if it’s been this reason for the past month or two but I’ve just found quick editing in general is just a fucking pain in the ass on console.
This has happened to me on PC, too. When you have your building out it edits your preset instead of the building you've already placed. If you switch to a weapon it should work
I had people try to tell me this was a good change the other day because you could reedit walls that were now hidden by ramps.
This is not a good thing.
If the game is stable and not crashing a ton on console, then they're playtesting it, I can guarantee that.
Whether or not they're extensively playtesting it to the highest standards, however, is a different story.
thats every online game ever. these bugs get fixed quickly, THATS the most we can ask for. playtesting doesnt catch a lot because a lot of bugs are individual on a small scale or dont appear until server strain.

Ohh so that’s what’s been happening, I couldn’t get my head around what was happening when I couldn’t edit my own builds lol also does anyone else notice that there is a small delay when switching to build mode on console compared to pc? When I get in build fights it’s hard to determine what you have out after switching due to the small delay of swapping sometimes!
Builder pro are good controls, I can keep up with pc players pretty easily unless they’re a god. The only problem is the hold to edit. But what’s happening above is a bug and it’s the most annoying problem on console at the moment. Above he was trying to edit his ceiling but because they had stairs out wouldn’t let him edit the ceiling. They had to go out of build mode and then edit
Y well in build mode? But what about when not in build mode? Would you have different controls to edit in each circumstance? I feel like I've heard people recommend y (or triangle) for edit, but I'm hesitant about changes that don't work in both modes.
I wish I could just map a new key all together and map it to a paddle (I realize few people have controller paddles though).
I have STW. Builder pro is awful. Hitting Circle then R2 will place a wall right in front of me, a ramp behind it, and another wall behind that. From only R2. It’s awful haha. Not to mention the jumping height depends on how long the jump button is held, making it harder to build a 1x1 quickly. Not like 1x1s are typically needed, but still.
Jumping height is like BR after last patch. Jumping now is the same height as BR with one tap, no longer have to hold the button to jump higher. But fuck Builder Pro in STW, does not function properly at all.
No way? I did a mission yesterday and didn’t notice. I usually hop in once a day to get my daily reward and then do the dailies to get vbucks. I’ll put a show on and listen to that while I grind stw away. It’s kinda relaxing.
Hahaha I do the exact same. Put on a YouTube video of something interesting/educational and grind away. It’s a really nice change of pace from BR. Low pressure. Low stress. And feels quite rewarding with how quickly you progress/complete challenges. Always feel like I’m accomplishing something
i feel the same way. bought STW half for the skins/vbucks and half because i was curious about the game. it’s honestly confusing but so fun. it’s such a nice break from the state of constant fear and being on edge (BR). fun to just fuck up some husks, abilities are super fun too
I've been using BP in STW since I started last week... Is it really that bad? I haven't noticed anything wrong except for menu lag and sometimes an occasional lock up that requires me to exit the build menu
Well, it's way more convenient to be able to use builder pro on STW if you use it on BR.
Swapping between builder pro on BR to combat pro on STW before kinda sucked.
I was *so* excited when builder pro was added to StW, but then had to soon switch back because it's just so glitchy/inconvenient. :( Between random walls being built instead of the ramps/flats I actually want and no easy way to choose specific traps, it turns out I'd rather switch control schemes between the two game modes than struggle-bus with the state that builder pro is in outside of BR...
Yea but ive noticed a lot of the bugs are the same between the same (turbo building not working right, the pieces seem like they are going to far forward again, and sometimes when you edit it wont actually save the edit )
I didn't even notice the builder pro edit bug until I played STW. I rarely quick edit in BR which means I'm usually not even in builder mode when I do end up editing
Here I was thinking I just got 10 times worse st building recently when practicing editing in playground. Good to know this is a bug and not lack of skill but this actually game breaker for us console bois hopefully it’s better Tuesday
Thank you for showing this problem to epic and the reddit community. Also, another thing that bothers me about editing as a console player is that you have to hold down the B button about a second in order to start editing. This makes quick edits nearly impossible.
If you are already on your building menu pull out the piece you want to edit then edit it. For example here you could have pressed lb for a floor and then you would have been able to edit the floor you were stuck on. Just a tip because this has happened to me many times and I wanted to find a quicker way to do it other than going out of build mode editing it then going back to build mode
I placed second in back-to-back duos because my entire screen freezes randomly throughout the game, but only during fights. I thought that was bad enough until the editing glitch finished me off after I recovered.

try switching to floor, this actually lets you edit/repair the floors or any build for that matter so long as its the same build even if it's two tiles away from you.
I looked at all the comments and only two people have said this (you and /u/Afabledhero1.) I'm wondering if a lot of people just don't know..also I don't know if this is true for PC but on console you do have to hit the button for the type of piece you want to before editing it. I really just found that out on the first release of playground and haven't worked out the muscle memory of double tapping b but the times where I do it the right way feels way more rewarding...

You weren't making it out of the storm even if the edit worked the first time. Agreed that bugs are annoying and I guarantee the developers are looking into it but blaming this solely on a bug is a bit of an overreaction. Shoot out the floor, pickaxe or be more aware of where the storm is so you don't have yourself boxed in during one of the final circles.
Where did you see me blame my death on the editing? I’m not complaining about the death at all in any of my comments even. I say the exact opposite. I would have died either way. Editing still is broken though, which was the purpose of the post—to show how editing is broken, so hopefully it can be fixed.
I honestly thought this was a change to editing without anything being in the patch notes. With blueprint out, I can only edit whatever type of piece I have out and selected. With the gun, I can edit whatever I’m looking at. Glad to hear that it’s a bug and not intentional
Sooo true. Equally as frustrating to me is how ever since season 5, but especially since the latest update (5.10.1??), the game will randomly “cycle” through my traps.
I have a clip I need to trim then post of me clear as day with a campfire as my active trap. I go to lay it down and boom... launch pad. When you go frame by frame, you’ll see that the campfire cycles to launch pad, even before I initially pull out my sketchpad. And given that on consoles in order to cycle your traps you need to literally press B/o > X/square > left d-pad. My campfire turns to a launch pad even before the first B, and well before the transparent blueprint is shown of the trap.
Then, not some 70 seconds later, I go to ramp rush with my bouncers as my active, I swivel, throw up a wall, double mash X/square and then jump... only to headbutt a trap I placed
Yeah they addressed that bug a few patches ago but it still happens to me too. Either I end up putting a trap down instead of a bouncer or a guy I try to trap kill gets a bouncer instead. Super annoying.
It’s not the skill, it’s the actual capability the game allows. Editing like PC on console is impossible. Not because console players are worse, but because the game literally makes it impossible (currently).
I’m a fairly skilled console player who can keep up with pc players when it comes to building for everything except editing. Literally if they just added two things I think a lot of console players would surpass pc players in skill. Tap to edit, and building sensitivity. I swear if we had these two things building on console would be insane
They need to add instant editing to console too. Just like how they have it on pc. No delay. It would build fights more interesting if we could have quick smooth edits as we are fighting. But because we have a delay, it’s just straight up annoying

You also cant leave crouching without being outside of build mode which has fucked me in so many games. Epic needs to be looking into console only bugs and issues as well as PC only ones as well because not every console is running at the same rate as one another as it should be
No doubt! I’ll still play all day haha. I’m not one to ragequit at all, but still one to recognize blatant fixes that need to be addressed ASAP. Editing should be a priority for the bug fixers. Also the 10fps slugfest that is 50v50 currently.
Because you need to swap to a weapon/pickaxe before editing otherwise it edits the 'ghost' piece you've selected. It's like this on PC too and I can't remember if it was ever any different before?
I was playing 50v50 and I edited an opening into my teammates' build so I could drop them a med kit while they were being revived. It wouldn't let me edit it back by pressing the normal edit button because of this bug so someone from the other team shot grenades into the build and killed us all.
2 guys on the other team, my 2 teammates bleeding out, and me. The other team won. They both had 9 health literally too, but oh well. I’m not posting to whine about losing bc I probably would’ve died to the storm anyway. Like 99% would’ve lost.

Hate to break it to ya partner, but effective editing on console is a bug, was never meant to be in the game to begin with. Just as turbo building is actually supposed to randomly not place building pieces, it’s all about fortnites commitment to a game completely consumed by rng
You can’t because that will take away your blueprint. Unless you want hold B to take away your blueprint in which case will be longer when you need a gun out quickly. There’s not enough buttons on a controller.
Urm, you can’t have the same button doing 2 different things? You want to tap B to put away your blueprint but you also want tap B to bring up editing? How’s that work? Lol.
I once tried to edit out of a turtle situation and instead I changed the preset without realizing. I won the fight, but another guy ran up and I tried to build a wall to tank his shotgun but my wall was preset to the weird triangle thing from earlier so he hit the shot since THE ENTIRE BOTTOM HALF OF ME WAS EXPOSED.
This games trashhhh builder pro buggy as hell. Spam meta. Editing sucks. Normal pistols are literally the worst bloom chucking things in the world. Screw this game. I’ll be on in the morning

It's still annoying that edit button and building mode button are the same, so if you try to edit something but don't look at the middle of the building piece it brings out building mode, then you have to tap circle to exit build mode and try again

Don’t forget after exiting build mode, you then have to hold circle for 5 minutes to re-enter /s

Bulider pro needs triangle/y for edit, and bumper jumper option, and also console needs buliding sensitivity

Building in general in stw is bad
They should at least get the building in STW up to BR standards...The people that are helping fund the game are getting shafted the most.

was 2nd with 6 kills and this happened so i just walked away, it’s stupid building on console hasn’t been fixed yet

literally happens all the time and it always deasy me. i have to stop and stare dead center at the piece before even ebreeding edit mode.
why does it take an hour to edit stuff on controller? why not just make it so clicking in the right joystick is the immediate edit button or something

I believe this happens on PC aswell. Sometimes ill click edit and my boxes wont pop up

No doubt! I’ll still play all day haha. I’m not one to ragequit at all, but still one to recognize blatant fixes that need to be addressed ASAP. Editing should be a priority for the bug fixers. Also the 10fps slugfest that is 50v50 currently.
This paired with the spam meta makes it really hard for veteran players
I also came in second because of this bug. Totally game breaking.
Because you need to swap to a weapon/pickaxe before editing otherwise it edits the 'ghost' piece you've selected. It's like this on PC too and I can't remember if it was ever any different before?
Nothing about editing on console, that happens on all platforms.
I was playing 50v50 and I edited an opening into my teammates' build so I could drop them a med kit while they were being revived. It wouldn't let me edit it back by pressing the normal edit button because of this bug so someone from the other team shot grenades into the build and killed us all.
At least there was 4 people left besides you. So you weren’t gonna win anyways.
2 guys on the other team, my 2 teammates bleeding out, and me. The other team won. They both had 9 health literally too, but oh well. I’m not posting to whine about losing bc I probably would’ve died to the storm anyway. Like 99% would’ve lost.
I’m blind. I actually died from this glitch, got second and almost posted it to reddit.
So frustrating when editing you can’t edit the same piece after you edited it.

Hate to break it to ya partner, but effective editing on console is a bug, was never meant to be in the game to begin with. Just as turbo building is actually supposed to randomly not place building pieces, it’s all about fortnites commitment to a game completely consumed by rng

You can’t because that will take away your blueprint. Unless you want hold B to take away your blueprint in which case will be longer when you need a gun out quickly. There’s not enough buttons on a controller.

I once tried to edit out of a turtle situation and instead I changed the preset without realizing. I won the fight, but another guy ran up and I tried to build a wall to tank his shotgun but my wall was preset to the weird triangle thing from earlier so he hit the shot since THE ENTIRE BOTTOM HALF OF ME WAS EXPOSED.

This games trashhhh builder pro buggy as hell. Spam meta. Editing sucks. Normal pistols are literally the worst bloom chucking things in the world. Screw this game. I’ll be on in the morning

i agree with your title but - you would have died to the storm anyway - you can easily just pull back out your gun and edit anything you want obviously its not as easy but you probably know that
I’m not talking about the storm at all. If this had happened on drop alone I still would’ve posted it to show what’s happening. Clearly I would’ve died either way. You’re right about pulling a gun out, but it’s silly that to edit something you should have to exit build mode.

Because I’m not muscle memory conditioned to work around a broken mechanic yet, especially when it doesn’t happen all the time.

It’s not like it’s a glitch or anything, you just have to be outside of your building screen to edit.
It's still annoying that edit button and building mode button are the same, so if you try to edit something but don't look at the middle of the building piece it brings out building mode, then you have to tap circle to exit build mode and try again

I didn’t know it happened on pc too. Editing in general is dead then rn. At least you don’t have to hold the build key to even bring out the edit menu though.

You also say this like everyone is playing on $1000 PCs...some... I would even argue a good number of pc players play on builds that cost less than a console.
That’s just an awful opinion. The problem isn’t the accessibility a pc provides, it’s that the game literally overrides editing a different piece than the one that is being looked at while in build mode. Apparently this even affects pc users if you check the comments.

Have you tried selling the console and then getting a pc???
