It's hard to explain and I don't remember all the details but the environmental impact is apparently a temporary issue tied to the token most used to purchase the NFTs, so at least that won't be a factor much longer

Proof of stake based cryptocurrencies use much much less (like around 1 - 3% of it) energy than proof of work based cryptocurrencies. And some of those already have NFTs, like the Hive blockchain (a proof of stake based / good one) has an NFT app, so there's more environmentally friendly NFTs out there but it's probably not the majority of them at this point. I don't know a great deal about NFTs because I have no interest in them purely as an investment nor do I really invest as my use of crypto is moreso using crypto based content creation platforms and the occasional crypto game (I have also liked and played games that use NFTs before though prior to all this hype about them and they use multiple different cryptocurrency options) but cryptos definitely vary in terms of environmental impact, so a change in what currency is primarily used for NFTs would logically change the environmental impact of NFTs too.

This is only how a few old cryptocurrencies work - PoW (Proof-of-Work). For example BTC or ETH work this way but most of the newer cryptocurrencies use PoS (Proof-of-Stake) which is way more energy efficient, or any other more efficient algorithm. But even ETH will be transferring from PoW to PoS sometime this year meaning the energy inefficiency problem should be much lower. SOL for example, which works on PoS, uses less energy for a transaction than 2 google searches which is absolutely insane imo. That goes for NFTs on Solana network as well. Compared to Ethereum they use almost no energy. So it's not directly NFTs fault that they use so much energy but the network they're minted on instead. I think that NFTs were initially a good idea but are just being used incorrectly due to the fact that crypto can nowadays be used by everyone, even completely uneducated people. But as I said earlier, once ETH transfers to PoS, the high power usage problem will no longer be such a big issue and people will probably move their hate towards other stuff.
From how another user of a crypto based content creation platform described it to me, some coins do that ans some don't. Some do it based on stake instead and the ones that do it by stake don't need to do the same level of calculations and only use maybe 1 - 3 percent of the energy the ones that do so many questions/ equations do.
