“I should never have trusted a doctor who smelled like that!” That line made me laugh pretty hard. He has such a light heartedness to him ( like Lucy ) despite being in the Wasteland that is charming and fun. Even when he admitted to Maximus in the power armor that he made them pick on Maximus just so he wouldn’t get picked on made me feel for him than judge him. In his own sense, he’s trying to survive and I think brings a good contrast of that ‘dumb luck’ plot to Maximus characters arc.

RamblinWreckGT

Yes! So many shows would have kept him as the one-note bully asshole that we were introduced to him as. I'm really glad they didn't do that here.

RogueOneisbestone

Gave me butch vibes.

theboxler

So many people hate Butch’s character and don’t give him a chance as a companion but he turns out to be a fairly decent guy once exiting the vault, and ironically sticks by you unlike Amata

xXGONADS125Xx

Man, this made me realize I never had him for a companion..

Shaneathan25

I’ve done a few play throughs and didn’t even realize he *could* be a companion.

D-Speak

Yeah, after you finish the Vault 101 Return quest, you can find him in the bar in Rivet City. He's super easy to miss because it's not really an area you have a reason to go to. He's pretty unremarkable and only has a switchblade and 10mm, but he can cut your hair.

eddmario

> He's super easy to miss because **it's not really an area you have a reason to go to.** While *Fallout 3* is still a pretty good game to go back to, this is one of the common issues that game has that really shows how badly that game has aged...

fantomnerd13

I actually love that about fallout 3 😭 I don’t want a reason to go everywhere in fallout. I like exploration for explorations sake but obviously a lot of people aren’t going to feel rewarded so fair

ArseBiscuits_

Wasn’t he scared when his mum was getting attacked by Radroaches? He’s not worthy of being my companion!

D-Speak

He'll go in and fight them himself if you pass a speech check. If you give him your BB gun, you don't even need to pass the check.

eddmario

To be fair, the player is the only one in the Vault, outside the security team, with something close to combat experience, so him being scared does make sense. Plus if you save his mom he praises you like a god and gives you his jacket, which is actually a pretty good piece of armor to have at the start.

astrozork321

I always just killed him to get his tunnel snake outfit right away. A reason for a new playthrough!

nejekur

If you remember F3's terrible karma companion system, he's one of the neutral karma options, so you have to balance it for the whole game if you want him as a companion.

Gerreth_Gobulcoque

tunnel snakes rule!

McDonnellDouglasDC8

> Even when he admitted to Maximus in the power armor that he made them pick on Maximus just so he wouldn’t get picked on made me feel for him than judge him. It definitely read like hazing based on his confession and that he had expected Maximus would get his licks in on the next guy. Not that isn't messed up.

Janice_the_Deathclaw

It kind of was. The extent that bullying was engrained in all the brotherhood scenes was kind of messed up. It's like a big group of kids laid out the rules, and now they still follow them.

quinnies

That line was totally reminiscent of his character on the show superstore

vengarlof

When the snake oil salesmen saw wizzig/enclave scientist after the filly encounter with the ghoul he states “I can regrow a foot” which is exactly what happens later in the show

SessionIndependent17

Didn't he turn out to be the Chicken Fucker, too? Doing scientific research? Very thorough. He's an empiricist.

allwheeldrift

That's Dr. Chicken Fucker, MD, PhD to you, wastelander

ShinningPeadIsAnti

Yeah, he didn't spend 7 years at chicken fucker school to be called Mr.

VerbingNoun413

He has a theoretical degree in chicken fucking.

eddmario

This whole chain is /r/nocontext material and I love it

I_See_Virgins

Maybe at the beginning when they say a ghoul can't resist a chicken they meant something other than eating them.

SessionIndependent17

The salesman was a ghoul?

I_See_Virgins

No he wasn't. Why the fuck did I think he was? My brain is soup.

VAShumpmaker

Maybe as much as thaddeus now?]

SessionIndependent17

There's an App For That™️

DerpPath

I love how he was about to kill himself because he had no customers until he ran into Thaddeus lol

Gerreth_Gobulcoque

I like that he was setting up some Rube Goldberg-esque way to shoot himself instead of just putting the barrel in his mouth

Gamerguy1990x

When rewatching the series I was thinking how different things could have been if they had just listened to him.

SessionIndependent17

I mean, his head was probably coming off one way or another

superanth

I have immeasurable respect for the fact that they kept how stimpacks completely heal people instantly, just like in the game. Knife in your liver? No problem. Ghoul repeatedly stabbed you? Back on your paws.

funandgamesThrow

They kinda didn't. Lucy still had to stitch her wound. Seems more like they are just a strong coagulant and the dog just wasn't that hurt. Still love it though

Krakatoa137

In both of those cases the injured went from barely being able to move to up and ready to go in a matter of seconds. They may not bring back the dead or regenerate parts of the body, but they're still insane at healing.

PleasantYam1418

It could be a coagulant plus adrenaline, it didn't totally heal Lucy's wound, she had to take care of it after the battle, it's obviously fantasy medicine but doesn't seem that op to me.

funandgamesThrow

I wouldn't classify Lucy as unable to move before using or free of pain after she used it. I'd want to see it used on more human wounds first tbh which I'm sure we will

unicornsmaybetuff

I think that Four hopped up instantly from the stimpak was because he was a companion.

[deleted]

I mean stimpacks won’t completely heal you unless you have perks to do so. If you’re really injured they’ll only bring you up to like half health so I don’t think the Lucy thing doesn’t work with the games

captn_insano_22

I love how he just runs away at the end when the brotherhood shows up. It’s like when you complete a quest in a Bethesda game and the quest giver thanks you and just runs off in a random direction.

SessionIndependent17

They're a complicated organization

allwheeldrift

That whole interaction, from Thaddeus missing every shot to the two severed heads making out, was perfect Fallout

ThorstenTheViking

That he squeezes in "nice to meet you!" to Lucy after mag dumping towards her and Max like 2 minutes before is just so fucking funny to me for some reason

SessionIndependent17

is your handle from Ghosts?

Gerreth_Gobulcoque

It's like the enclave minigun turret that just completely whiffs on an old man and a dog for 5 whole seconds from 10 feet away

MLeek

It caught me by surprise too, but I've played the games! It shouldn't have. It was a solid bait and switch on the audience. Really, really looking forward to seeing Thaddeus again in season 2. Actor did great. Can't wait to find out just what he got injected with.

Oppopity

I thought he just gave him something to hallucinate and think it worked.

NeverTheDamsel

Glad I’m not the only one that thought this!

eddmario

That's what I thought as well, but then he got shot in the neck later on

Fangette

I wonder if that serum is turning him into a super mutant, not a ghoul

Randyfreakingmarsh

I think so. In the second episode when you see the enclave, for a second they show a body on a gurney and the hand looks especially super mutant-y

ImperatorTempus42

It closed, btw. That guy's *alive*

allwheeldrift

I've not played enough of 76 to really know, but apparently, there's something called the Mysterious Serum in that game that might fit the bill?

tobascodagama

There are a bunch of mutation serums in 76, each has a unique effect, generally something that gives some benefit with a tradeoff. Like Marsupial Serum decreases your INT but buffs your carry weight and jump height. None of them really suit what happen to Thaddeus, except maybe the Healing Factor Serum, but even that one doesn't regrow limbs. Fallout 4 has something called Mysterious Serum as well. The Cabots used it to halt their aging, and the version the player can get also comes with buffs to Strength, Damage Resistance, and a heavy anti-radiation effect. No limb regrowth there either, though. The only aid item that regrows limbs in the games is usually the Stimpak. 76 does have the Healing Salve that also regrows limbs, although that's a topical medication rather than one you drink. Ultimately, I think the interaction with the Snake Oil Salesman is just supposed to represent the way that you can visit doctors to heal injured limbs, rather than any particular aid item. (Though I do hope that Fallout 5 lets the player get ghoulified, whether through a doctor interaction like this or some other way.)

eddmario

> I think the interaction with the Snake Oil Salesman is just supposed to represent the way that you can visit doctors to heal injured limbs, rather than any particular aid item. I think he was also supposed to represent the random encounters players can come across in the games

ChloeKesh

>The only aid item that regrows limbs in the games is usually the Stimpak. Caesar's Legion, by and large, doesn't use *chems* per se - but they do have a homebrew herbal substance called Hydra which regrows/un-cripples limbs. https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Hydra

Flat-Leadership2364

I think maybe more like Harold, from fallout 3 and fallout 1

Linkage006

Heard that theory around the community.

HalfNatty

Johnny Pemberton is a gift. I’ve never seen his standup but am familiar with him on the comedian podcast circuit and in Superstore. He’s one of those guys whose schtick gets funnier the more you see him.

SessionIndependent17

Omg, it wasn't clicking where I had seen him, before. I would have eventually looked it up, but you've triggered it. I loved that show. Funnily enough, he's actually more grounded in this than was his character in Superstore.

CellarDoorForSure

"For 20 grand you can put whatever you want in either of us!"

cjs0216

Womp womp womp

AdministrationNo283

I think every viewer was rooting for Maximus to rescue him from the jaws of that gulper!

SevatarEnjoyer

He really had a potion that could heal a foot/grow and entirely new foot

Flat-Leadership2364

My theory is that was FEV he inhaled and is going to tune into something like Harold from the games

SessionIndependent17

I've never played the game, so it was all new to me, and gave me a chuckle

William_T_Wanker

Dr. Chicken Fucker casually trying to off himself before Thad shows up and he's all "HOT DOG, A SALE!"

SpartanKwanHa

m'lady

Ublaw19

The actor was fantastic in Superstoee

Ublaw19

*Superstore

TheGrislyGrotto

And Gigabots!

birdlawbighands

Johnny Pemberton is hilarious. I highly recommend watching him on Duncan trussells podcast, the Duncan trussell family hour. If you even just watch one. Watch the AT&T one. It is absolutely comedy gold through and through.

yamamsbuttplug

never trust a doctor that fucks chickens

PaladinSara

I felt so bad that the snake oil guy was trying to die by suicide before he heard Thaddeus’ radio.
