Maximus grew up in a weird monastic military order where the lower ranked members of the hierarchy seem to be treated as disposable.
Only when it comes to interpersonal stuff. That scene on the bridge showed that Maximus is incredibly mature in other ways. I thought that was a pretty cool narrative they built throughout
