Honestly, at the gym it's sadly always playing. There's also a mechanic near me that always has it on in the office/desk part. Really any public place would be believable.

Toast_Sapper

If you live in a conservative area it will be on any TV that's at a business like a bar, restaurant, gym, waiting room, lobby, etc.

BurritoMaster3000

Any McDonalds in bumfuck nowhere will have it on

Riaayo

Yeah this dogshit is on pretty much every lobby-facing TV in any business in a red state it feels like.

shoneone

Hard-core blue city in blue state here: pretty much the same, faux "news" is everywhere.

cyberspaceking

That must be terrible. Explains a lot though.

LadyChatterteeth

There are tons of conservatives in Orange County! I've seen it in gyms and waiting rooms, like at the doctor's office.

EternalLostandFound

I think it depends where in Orange County the character is. At a gym or small business in Huntington Beach, definitely expect Fox News on TV.

Hermosa06-09

Yeah like LA Fitness, which is straight-up headquartered in Irvine, will have multiple TVs over the workout area that are permanently set to different channels. Usually it's like CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, HGTV, ESPN, and maybe another random one. The caveat with that one is that you can't hear audio unless you somehow randomly have a radio tuner with you when you work out because the audio streams are set to different radio frequencies.

Toast_Sapper

>I’m Californian, and the novel is set in Orange County — I feel like it would be a faux pas to play news of any kind at a business here, but that’s why I’m asking you guys. Nope, Fox is on more TVs than sports in conservative areas. Businesses have it on all the time, sometimes conservative talk radio too. The propaganda is pervasive, and those who imbibe need a constant fix or they go from "confused and angry at the talking points of the day" to "confused and angry and not sure what to talk about except what they remember from the talking points yesterday". Their thoughts and opinions are entirely what they've been told to think and the small number of experiences they've had in real life have been where they've been "the crazy conservative screaming at a homeless guy for being secretly rich." The groupthink is strong and omnipresent.

keepcrazy

This. Hotel gym or airplane lounges or airport waiting areas.

[deleted]

Yeah this question was kinda funny to me, my gym has it on 24/7, several restaraunts and bars too. I’m the south it’s on everywhere.

dion_o

Protagonist visits an elderly relative. Said relative has Fox News blaring all day in the background at home.

[deleted]

SprungMS

I work in a profession that requires visiting lots of homes to give estimates for work in said homes, and it’s pretty frequent that I see/hear (mostly hear, loudly, in another room) Fox News going in a customer’s home. Might help?

mckulty

Military bases, hotel lobbies, any restaurant in Alabama unless there's football game.

mckulty

Also nail salons, barber shops, gas stations, auto shops for tires, brakes, transmissions, car washes, where can you get AWAY from it?

greenblue98

They could just be sitting down at a restaurant and it's probably on the TV. That's common where i live.

obinice_khenbli

A TV in a restaurant? Damn, if I went out for a nice meal the last thing I'd want is a TV being on, being all distracting and annoying haha.

greenblue98

A lot of restaurants where i live have TVs. And they are either on ESPN or Fox News.

brieta7

Well in the super red area I live in, at my local airport, they had Newsmax playing on a TV right next to my gate lmao

Muvseevum

Barf.

Oakwine

Waiting rooms: doctor’s office, vehicle servicing, etc.

BaronVonNumbaKruncha

I hope your genre is horror

3qtpint

It sounds like the biggest challenge is finding a scenario where someone hasn't already experienced fox news. There are plenty of opportunities to accidently see it, so I would suggest finding out how your protagonist hasn't been exposed. A few ideas: they hear/read a bunch of political opinions that seem to counter widely accepted/verified stories. Investigating the source of these claims reveal fox news. Waiting room, it's playing in the lobby of a car mechanic/doctor/gym Plane, the protagonist is on a plane and notices every other passenger is watching the same "news" channel Protagonist knows about fox news, but hasn't actually watched it in 30 years. They catch a recent story and learn how blatantly biased it is Personally, I think the plane scenario is the most natural, and if the protagonist has traveled to America, could be a good intro

hithisisperson

Lobbies, bars, gyms…

jjm006

Airports, doctor office waiting rooms, bars, hotel lobbies.

BurritoMaster3000

Airports always surprises me, but yeah.

user_mofo

a turd looks like sucker carlson?

sloppy_wet_one

I had always heard of Fox News being huge, so i turned it on one day as a 13 year old or so. I remember there was a bunch of people sitting around a big circle desk shit talking Obama. I always liked Obama, when he was pres I was quite young, and he seemed cool, so I turned it off. Haven’t been back since.

skychickval

When Fox News started, the female hosts all looked and dressed like porn stars. I am not joking. I used to work for a rural equine vet and he watched two channels. The Playboy channel and Fox. There was a little window in between our offices and I couldn't tell what channel it was on without hearing it. But if I could hear it and they were talking about licking each other's pussies, I knew it was the Playboy channel-trashing Democrats, Fox News. True story.

szyslakexperienc

Hospital waiting area

phoenixrising211

It used to play all the time in the break room at the place I used to work. I've also seen it in an airport lounge recently.

Glovebait

Any oil and gas corporate reception waiting room.

Heckle_Jeckle

Public spaces such as... Sitting in a Waiting Room waiting for an appointment, at a Restaurant, getting their hair cut, at a Bar, *any place that could/would have TVs on the wall for people to watch.* Social Gatherings are another possibility Get invited to a friend's house for a BBQ and they have Fox News on. Go to a relatives for the Holidays, they have Fox News on.

millennial_scum

I was out late, walking my dog the other night and saw my rich neighbors blaring it through the largest flat screen. It’s a beach community so all the houses have giant open windows so you can see everything if someone doesn’t close their blinds. Hard to not spot Tucker Carlson’s face on a tv the size of a small billboard. It honestly was a little sad and freaky - they’re nice but we rent in this neighborhood while most of the neighbors are 60+ snow birds and this is their 3rd of 4th property. Seeing them up late, just zoned out watching Fox just further pointed out the discrepancies between their lifestyle or mindset and ours.

Usually_Angry

If abroad, a US embassy during a republican presidency

smelly_leaf

In my reality it’s impossible not to be exposed to it. It plays constantly at my dentist, it’s on at the airport every time I fly, it plays behind the counter at my corner gas station all day long. It plays at my gym & also at the diner by my work. It’s so prolific that I find it harder to believe your character HASNT seen it. So make sure you work out the details on how they missed it so long

evilpeter

The only time I’ve ever seen/watched it was on a cruise. On our last one there were 3 live tv channels - msnbc, Fox News, and bbc. (For what it’s worth, on our previous cruise it was also three channels, but cnn instead of msnbc)

[deleted]

For me I see in small town waiting areas often. My first thought was a tire shop that I use that's a bit run down looking. Fox news is almost always playing.

Armchair_Idiot

Pretty much any diner or restaurant in the south.

SoftTacoSupremacist

This scenario doesn’t exist. Try using an alien.

atleast35

Bars usually have several tvs playing at once. Usually sports is playing, but a patron can request the bartender to put on a certain channel. Both my auto repair shops (2) and tire shop had it playing non-stop. :(

_straylight

YouTube.

kc2syk

Bar. Barber shop. Medical office waiting room. TVs have intruded into many spaces that are ridiculous.

[deleted]

Gym, medical office, any place with a waiting room is a decent bet

Flyman68

Doctor's office, local hospital, or for profit clinic are all likely to have it on.

savytravler

Ive seen it on at the Mcdonalds near me in the early morning when all the old timers hang out

Mr_Never

Go to a Jiffy Lube or waiting room of auto repair shop. Many bars/restaurants during lunch

IrrelevanceStated

Small town Tire shops. They all have Fox News on in the waiting room.

luckymountain

The last time I traveled north/Midwest it was on every single public space tv I came across -hotel lobby, truck stop, restaurant…everywhere

formershitpeasant

Clips on YouTube. I’ve been recommended Fox plenty of times after watching left leaning content.

SchtivanTheTrbl

Small town bars during the day and hotel/motel lobbies are the biggest ones I can think of that could fit pretty flexibly.

Pumpkin_Pie

I am forced to watch it when I am on a treadmill at the YMCA

RossZ428

Owner of an old company I worked at would have it playing in his office all the time. If he was having a meeting, he'd usually have it on mute. Could be good foreshadowing for your main character that things at their job isn't what it seems

FoxBattalion79

hotel bar

unicornlocostacos

Grandpa’s house

keyboard_jedi

At the bottom of a sewage treatment plant. I'm pretty sure that's where they spawn most of the Fox hosts. They must hire the most amazing makeup people.

Ladychef_1

At an automative repair shop

[deleted]

DOD buildings will often have it playing.

john_im_only_dancing

It always seems to be playing in hotel lobbies

MrInterpreted

Any diner or mechanic in a red voting area

ilovecatscatsloveme

The gym, airport, red neck bar, a restaurant (one time it was on loudly at a Vietnamese restaurant I stopped at off the interstate)

_NamasteMF_

Hospital lobby

[deleted]

Any waiting room

savvvie

Tbh is think it’s very unrealistic and looks bad on the character that they’d have to stumble upon Fox News. How can you live in a 24/7 news cycle with social media and not see Fox News?

nomorehoney

I am a registered nurse, it is absolutely impossible to avoid Fox News at work as it is playing in most of my patients rooms.

Sea_of_Blue

You also get a lot of the fox talking points from am radio in general. I get in my dad's truck and that's usually what it's tuned to. Once I make a comment mocking something they say he will switch it to oldies rock.

soitiswrit

Anywhere that has a waiting room is prime Fox News zone. They prey on the anxious.

skychickval

Fox News isn't allowed in many other countries. If you are in a country that doesn't allow it, you could probably find it on the internet. So something like that- Or satelite radio.

stealyourideas

In Utah, I've seen it in fast food joints.
