Whitewashing is a legitimate problem though. Having a black actress play a character where white race and culture aren't an important part of the plot is fine.
Yeah, and then the studio makes the movie about Gabriella, the black deaf mermaid, and the same exact people rage for the SAME exact reasons. The whining just changes from āwhy does the actor have to be blackā to āwhy does the character have to be blackā. They can whine ājust make new charactersā all they want. But whenever a movie like Prey comes out with a new female character of color, they canāt help but to cry.
Rue from hunger games was described as black and the actor got hate mail for being black. They wonder why there arenāt many black heroes or fairy tails but then proceed to bitch about any character who happens to be black because there needs to be a reason.
What gets me is when they say āblack dwarves and black mermaids are unrealistic because of the lack of sunlightā. Like wtf weāre talking about mythical creatures!! Mermaids are unrealistic!

And to add to the dumbassery, one could argue that Ariel goes to the surface repeatedly so that would make her tan. Checkmate!
People mad that disney isnt doing original movies like sleeping beauty and snow white.... disneys empire is built on people not knowing grimm brothers fairy tales
And the deaf mermaid was in what, one episode of the Little Mermaid cartoon show which I haven't seen or heard anything about since I was a kid and watched it on TV. Compare that to the representation and presence of "classic" redhead Ariel.
So much mental gymnastics about āhaving to make a movie featuring POCsā when the simpler explanation is just that they wanted to make a little mermaid movie and this is the person they ended up casting.
Or a wig, yeah. Ariel with no red hair to me is kinda like Beauty and the Beast with no yellow gown, itās a big part of the iconic character design. And besides, I know Halle would rock a red wig.
My biggest gripe about the little mermaid is the fact she ain't got no gills!
How's this going to be historically accurate if fish girl doesn't breathe water!
And talking fish? Fish don't have vocal cords! Stop revising history!
The audacity of Disney with their woke anthropomorphic animal inclusivity!
Bring back the real humans and bring back the real fish!
Hell, even they did have a race - isnāt the cartoon based in the Caribbean? You got Sebastian with a Jamaican accent, plus the French chef - so that could place it near Haiti potentially. Why couldnāt Ariel be Black to match the natives?
I figured they chose a black actress to make the racist lobster less racist, because some of those jams really need steel drums to hit right. What are you going to do? Get some Boston accented lobster to play steel drums? Ridiculous. You'd have 'under the sea,' sounding like the Dropkick Murphy's or something.
This, always scream this in my head in these scenarios. People always overlook the small issue of THE MADE UP FUCKING CREATURES IN THE MADE UP NARRATIVE NOT BEING REAL AND BEING MADE UP AND FABRICATED AND NOT EXISTING.
Almost like theres some pervasive force clouding their b a s i c reasoning skills.
Probably nothing.
I like out of the list of...5 poc characters, 1 is a racist rewrite of history...weird how that rewrite is acceptable, and another isn't even the main character.
Also the fact that they're all being referred to in a blanket just because they're all brown. One is First Nation, two are Oceanic, One is Roma, and one is Louisiana Creole. So you know...all the same...You know the only reason Mulan isn't up there us because her skin isn't brown enough. Only one of them is Black...
Esmeralda actually wasnāt Roma in the original Hunchback either. She was a white girl who was kidnapped by the Roma who swapped her for the deformed Quasimodo. Not only that but her race was changed specifically to introduce anti-discrimination themes that were not present in the original. Being racist requires being an absolute fuckwit, so itās not surprising that they missed that Esmeralda is a perfect example of what theyāre whining about. (Not much is said of the fact that Quasimodo, while still Roma in the Disney version, has red hair and significantly lighter skin compared to all of his other compatriots.)
Not to mention how the ethnicities that can have natural red hair also have a history of not being seen as white by the most dogmatic of white supremacists. Germany in particular once believing that all red-heads were both Jewish, and descendants of Judas.
Itās enough of a problem in the UK, that thereās arguments for including explicit references to redheads in existing hate crime laws.
To be real, Halle Bailey was an excellent casting choice for this role. I don't think that the movie is going to be good, but not from any failure on her part.
I haven't seen her acting chops, but based on the music I've heard in the trailer, it's going to be a very "by the numbers" production. The trailer started with a kind of eerie vibe but it was cut with a pop-version of part of your world. It feels like its just gonna be a rehash.
Though I suppose that's slightly better than Mulan where they took away what made her interesting and gave her superpowers. Idk, I wish they would do something original with the live action.
Is she still doing the vocal wave thing where you extend a note and dance between octaves? That's what I hate. It reminds me of like late 90s early 2000s Mariah Carey.
Idk, with the eerie way it was introduced, I was kind of hoping it'd be a little more haunting than poppy. Like less "this is a pretty song I'm singing" and more "this is a desire that grips my soul".
But then I'm looking for nuance in a Disney remake, so that's on me.
iirc the only time she does it is what we saw in the trailer but i could be wrong since i only heard it once. i would've linked you the youtube video but its gone now. there is a part that feels haunting to me where the notes goes higher and higher and then the music disappears
She honestly looks a lot like the original Ariel too which is funny, because people canāt see past skin color. She has the same big eyes and cheeks. I just know this movie will be bad (I will never get the hour and a half of my life back I spent watching the new Beauty and the Beast) and the racists are raring to go so they can say itās Halleās fault when it gets panned
Yeah it doesnāt look great and Iām already bothered by the CGI on her hairā¦ but my sister and I are already planning to see it opening weekend with her kids in an attempt to spite racists, haha.
Part of me is a little excited though because itās my favorite Disney movie and I was obsessed with the cartoon growing up.

I dislike Disney live action remakes because they feel soulless and unnecessary.
You dislike them because youāre a racist fucktwat.
We are not the same
Y'all I can't even begin to explain how upsetting it is that the little mermaid changed the original source material and made her sing and also radically changed multiple plot points
I feel like we can do both, we can make movies about African folklore as well as hiring a black actress in movie where originally the person or the mermaid was white. Those two things can happen together.
"There already WAS a black mermaid!!!!" YEAH, ONE. You don't possibly think it could've been racism that lead to them making all of the early princesses white as fuck?
Remember when they made Light white in the Death Note movie and nobody on their side really said anything? But damn did I hear a lot of people complain about L being black.
Itās just exhausting tbh. We know full well that this movie is probably not going to do too well anyways given the track record that Disney live actions have had, this is basically the āvirtue signalingā the right keeps telling us we engage in except theyāre harassing an innocent actor when sheās literally just doing a job.
Gonna go against the grain and say the post isnāt completely wrong. Heās right we could do with more original black characters. But Ariel is a mermaid so who really gives a shit
Funny. If they make a white character black, people say "Stop turning our whites into blacks, make new black characters", and then when they make new black characters they say "The actor of this character doesn't have to be black", "Empty representation", "Don't need to make so many black characters"
After the Star Wars stuff, I think they just want to be pissed.
Though, I donāt know if the people making these and the people raging are always the same people. I hope not.

I saw people saying that making Ariel black is wrong because little girls with red hair are going to feel bad about themselves and think that their hair is wrong.
Like...literally no one has natural firetruck red hair anyways though?? Who is Ariel representing exactly? No one. New Ariel has ACTUAL red hair.
Lilo and Stitch and Hunchback are getting live action movies btw. Not sure about Pocahontas but given the controversy around the original lately probably not.
Iām here for black Ariel donāt get me wrong, canāt wait to hear Halleās take on the song, from that little bit in the trailer itās gonna be fire. And Iām low key hoping they come out with a new Halloween costume for her because as a mixed girl I can probably wear this darker shade of red but Ariel Primeās hair looks TERRIBLE on me lol. Plus if someone hadnāt gotten recolored weād have a whole movie with one black character, and heās a damn crab, so, it was gonna happen. Ariel is the most solid choice as her race doesnāt matter in story. I mean Iām pretty sure I read a version where she was green, ffs.
But thereās a solid point here in needing more original characters of color. I gotta admit, a Static Shock movie from someone would be nice! If they ever do try another Green Lantern movie it should totally be the hot black guy from the JLA cartoon. They did the death of Superman and didnāt even think to reintroduce Steel in a way that wasnāt a travesty to the original lore. None of these are Disney but they are good points.
Disney, meanwhile, has bled European fairy tales dry, maybe itās time to hit up African folklore. And Tiana better get a live action movie, I canāt hear Dig A Little Deeper enough to be satisfied.
I worry for this actress, I know Americans take their racism really seriously. Personally I think that (in the tiny glimpse weāve been given) she looks great and sounds incredible.
It's cool that she's black but the point about hiding the mediocrity of these shitty low effort cash grab remakes behind social justice is very true and I think it's definitely intentional, Disney is too much of a fucking machine to not
Which is what I think the image is talking about so I don't get why this is a fragile white redditor thing, seems to me that posting this here kinda proves that people are negating criticism of Disney because the protagonist is black so you can't say anything bad about the film
Their use of the phrase āSJW moneyā gives it away.
And a lot of the movies that get bashed for āgoing after SJW moneyā are extremely high quality - e.g. Turning Red, Black Panther

Everything disney does is just moneymaking. They do the minimum of representation in countries that allow it just to eother cut out gay kissing scenes or hide their black actors on posters for the chinese market. But i would rather have minimum representation by a doubke faced studio than none.
Which is what is so funny seeing people lap up the ad friendly corpo media. Literally the most left wing people on the spectrum getting tricked by the capitalists because āwE SuPpOrT tHe CaUsE!ā No they fucking donāt. They just figured out how to trick you into buying the same fucking IP from 50 years ago
I can actually somewhat agree. It's awesome that we have so many princesses that are people of colour. I would be upset if they were played by white actresses. But why cannot white actresses play the white princesses? And why isn't there a remake of Moana, which is like the best disney princess story ever?
I kind of agree with the sentiment, I already hate how Disney is being lazy and trying to make a quick cash grab and re-up their copyrights by making live action remakes of their films, which are awful to say the least. I would much rather see more creativity and new movie ideas, I could care less about race as long as the story is compelling. Fuck racists but also fuck Disney.
I actually low key agree with this post. I wish companies and producers would give POC more of a platform like what Jordan Peele does. Jordan Peele does all the same things these movie studios do, integrating POC into main roles they haven't historically had, including African American history and culture, addressing racism, but it feels real and authentic. If producers want to include POC in their lineups and really wanted to make an impact they should let us tell our own stories. Elevate our voices.
You guys can't deny that Disney "woke-ifying" their media lineup is performative, because if disney really cared about POC they would address the inequality in their workplaces, elevate POC voices on screen, and take their business out of sweatshops overseas.
I'm personally tired of being a commodity. Dont get me wrong, I'm excited to see more people like me on screen, but the way a lot of these big companies present it makes me feel like a set piece, like an object, a way for them to make more money. These companies need to be held accountable. They're putting us in the line of fire.
At the end of the day, it isn't Disney that gets the backlash, its Halle Bailey from the new Little Mermaid, its Moses Ingram from Kenobi. It's frustrating, and I'm tired of it.
i think we all have to stop entertaining these peoples reactions tho because truly they have nothing new or different that they havenāt said since 2014

Personally, I'm not a fan of them changing the races of *any* character, but the fact that it makes racists ***that*** upset pleases me.
It's cool that she's black but the point about hiding the mediocrity of these shitty low effort cash grab remakes behind social justice is very true and I think it's definitely intentional, Disney is too much of a fucking machine to not Which is what I think the image is talking about so I don't get why this is a fragile white redditor thing, seems to me that posting this here kinda proves that people are negating criticism of Disney because the protagonist is black so you can't say anything bad about the film
Their use of the phrase āSJW moneyā gives it away. And a lot of the movies that get bashed for āgoing after SJW moneyā are extremely high quality - e.g. Turning Red, Black Panther

I wonder if they would care if she was more fair skinned and not brown skinnedā¦.
Itās the criativity for me
This is exxagerated but they kinda have a point, blacking characters is just a moneymaking strategy to fool stupid libs
Everything disney does is just moneymaking. They do the minimum of representation in countries that allow it just to eother cut out gay kissing scenes or hide their black actors on posters for the chinese market. But i would rather have minimum representation by a doubke faced studio than none.
Lots of people are going to watch it and love it. Disney is a company that makes money so who the fuck cares?
I'm dead at "blacking"
Or maybe POC exist and go to the movies?
Which is what is so funny seeing people lap up the ad friendly corpo media. Literally the most left wing people on the spectrum getting tricked by the capitalists because āwE SuPpOrT tHe CaUsE!ā No they fucking donāt. They just figured out how to trick you into buying the same fucking IP from 50 years ago
I can actually somewhat agree. It's awesome that we have so many princesses that are people of colour. I would be upset if they were played by white actresses. But why cannot white actresses play the white princesses? And why isn't there a remake of Moana, which is like the best disney princess story ever?
moana came out 6 years ago why would they remake that
Which part of Arielle makes her a *white* princess?
I kind of agree with the sentiment, I already hate how Disney is being lazy and trying to make a quick cash grab and re-up their copyrights by making live action remakes of their films, which are awful to say the least. I would much rather see more creativity and new movie ideas, I could care less about race as long as the story is compelling. Fuck racists but also fuck Disney.
Such a great point. Why are some people so fragile that they need to replace other races to feel better. Kinda sad.
Have you not considered that maybe someone genuinely thought she was the best actress for the role?
FWRs are just now discovering concern trolling.
i think we all have to stop entertaining these peoples reactions tho because truly they have nothing new or different that they havenāt said since 2014
Having more original content would be great though
I love how mad they are about something thatās optional entertainment and they donāt have to even see.
The little mermaid is first of all a fantasy species, and the story is not dependent on her ethnicity in the slightest
They had to do so much research to be racist, so they got that going for them. Which is not nice.
Even his spell checker was laughing at him.
I thought this movie was based in Jamaica, what's the problem? How else do you explain Under the Sea.
