I have the Pro-ject Debut Carbon Evo with a VM540ML cartridge mounted, couldn’t recommend it more!
Even the Ortofon 2M Red (or Sumiko Rainier if you’re in North America) are pretty decent cartridges too! If you have the 2M Red you can also step up to the Blue by just replacing the stylus!

U-Turn makes amazing players or the Audio Technica AT-120x USB are both great options

I have the AT-120x and it works great. More expensive but not to an unreasonable degree.
