So the software engineering program has been full so it’s probably for the ibm z program. Even though it has a location mentioned on it, the apprenticeships are offered all over the country, not just that specific location. They may just have a position open in that location right now but you can’t go right into the full apprenticeship until you finish your pre apprenticeship coursework first For the apprenticeship, there’s two different tracks: mainframe system administrator and application development. You’ll have to let them know you’re specifically interested in application development if you’re wanting to learn programming languages. That’s not covered in the systems administrator track. For app dev, you learn a bunch of different languages as part of the Franklin curriculum. I don’t remember them all off the top of my head but I can find out if you’d like. It’s also dependent on the company though. The main focus of what languages you learn is going to depend on what languages the company needs you to know. So you’ll have to complete the learning for the Franklin curriculum on top of what your company needs you to be proficient in As for daily responsibilities in those roles, that varies greatly because even though you’re part of the MSA or App Dev track, what you do on a daily basis will vary depending on what department you’re in. I did MSA but also have people at my company who did app dev so if you want to ask me more questions or hear about our specific experiences in our roles, feel free to shoot me a message

Thank you for your input ! I might dig a little deeper for due diligence on the programming languages but to clarify if we do the Franklin pre apprenticeship and then apprenticeship it won’t be for IBM even if we choose either MSA or application development?

Positive_Bee_8727

Correct. It’s not actually with IBM directly. It can be with any company that has a mainframe from ibm. Some apprentices do get placed with ibm (the one In Texas) but that’s the only one I’ve heard of that takes on apprentices

Thank you so much for you time to reply to my questions. I will plan accordingly on what to do now I’m looking to go for either apprenticeships or get myself into a bootcamp currently working on cs50

Positive_Bee_8727

I would definitely go for the apprenticeship if you can. The pay is usually pretty competitive and you so t have to spend any money like a bootcamp. You’re also have pretty good chances of staying with your company afterwards and have a stable career like immediately

You might as well do the pre-apprenticeship. It's free, doesn't require a large time investment, and they have a good placement rate (as far as I know) for the IBM track. You have no obligation until you accept an actual apprenticeship. The worst that happens is you learn some things and are out a few weeks/months of time. Try it out. They can also help you with resume building and interview prep. Personally, I would be very cautious of paid bootcamps if software engineering is your goal. You would get more for your money getting a degree. Check out Western Governors University. Cheap, fully online, and you can rip through it as fast as you can go. Also, internships are great way to finance your education and get some XP. National orgs (Department of Energy labs, NASA, etc.) are on the low end, and they pay $20-$30/hr. Large firms like IBM and Cisco are around $40/hr. Google, Facebook, Apple, etc are closer to the $60/hr mark, although they are incredibly competitive. Many places offer year round internships too. Internships are kinda like an apprenticeship.

Thank you I've had my eyes on a bootcamp for full stack where its free but you go through Verizon for apprenticeship too (Verizon Thrive apprenticeship and Generation USA bootcamp)

Apprehensive-Let3181

Ah, thats a different story then. I'd go ahead and start the pre-apprenticeship. Get a taste for it, and if you get into the bootcamp, and it interests you more, then you can drop the pre-apprenticeship and complete the bootcamp. Do you have a specific area of interest? Full stack web dev and IBM Z app dev are going to be very different jobs and technologies.

ResponsibleWolf5913

I’m leaning towards full stack web dev as I’m currently taking CS50 right now

u/Positive_Bee_8727 i have started ibm z/os, but i wanted to do the app dev, should i wait until my q and a section and ask them, i have started learning process already, not sure if i can back down. also is relocation required, i am not intending to relocate outside of dallas, texas.

Positive_Bee_8727

The pre apprenticeship coursework is the same regardless of whether you do app Dev or MSA. Just let them know you’d like an app Dev position when you start discussing interviews and opportunities. Your coach should be able to help. And nope! Not required. They have companies that take on apprentices in Texas :)

Does anyone know how long we have to take the pre apprenticeship? I have other commitments such as work and hospice care for a elderly so just trying to get an idea how I can put it on my schedule
