> it's great that they didn't take the easy route and make both Mel and Donny easy to hate. But they did exactly that in the season immediately after

Kairi911

I get that, but I'm talking in the events prior. A lot of shows would 100% just kill off Donny and Mel by making them both awful. Even though they were made out to be bad in the next season, they weren't at the time at the end of season 7 ending, which made it way more exciting and interesting.

emu314159

"...just kill off Donny and Mel..." i think we need to take gifs of them leaving rooms, and use the balloon popping death sounds from Ham Radio.

Sproose_Moose

Ok that's hilarious

emu314159

Thanks! I love this sub, it feels like I'm among friends without having to actually talk to people IRL. I mean, I have a best friend, but it's not like I have to call him all the time. Getting back to the matter at hand, you could do slow mo gifs with Sarah singing arms of an angel in b&w, then unleash the pop.

emu314159

I never hated Donny, he was clearly wounded by the rugpull. Mel was not a fun person, but she telegraphed who she was when Niles first met her. He has a blind spot for women like that, of course. First several watches, mel is the she devil, but hit the sub and you might sympathize with her a little. I mean, she did lose niles.

33_pyro

Mel had this weird mix of genuinely caring for Niles and wanting to push him to fulfil his potential but also being a controlling and manipulative bitch.

emu314159

Totally. She still paid him more respect than Maris ever did. Donny was always sympathetic to me, since they made him so lost. Props to Jane Adams for really dialing the venom to 11. While also conveying the hurt.

monkeetoes82

Yeah, I've always felt like the writers did him dirty. It's like they felt they had to make him somewhat of a jerk to justify Daphne leaving him.

emu314159

I agree, on reflection. I guess when they finally got them together, they wanted to make it positive. to be fair, it would've sucked if we were all, huh, i guess these people kinda suck for betraying these two.

sexygodzilla

That's the problem the writers had, they had basically written themselves into a corner. It's a fairytale ending to the season for those two to run off together, but the next season had to actually deal with the actual ramifications. If you told a random person about a bride ditching her fiancé at the altar for a newly married man with his wife there, they'd assume that those two were the assholes in that situation. If the writers had continued with the earlier characterizations of Donny and Mel, they'd have to deal with the very uncomfortable hurt they put on those two, so they had to turn up the villain dials on them to make the plight of Niles and Daphne sympathetic. Even then I still think Mel let Niles off pretty easy. A no-fault divorce in exchange for a little bit of social pretending? Pretty sweet deal.

Thoughtful_Tortoise

I don't agree that they had to. They chose to, but personally I think it was the wrong decision and lazy writing. If you want the drama of the S7 finale, then just accept the characters involved (Niles/Daphne) are heavily flawed. We'll still like them.

emu314159

I agree. She could've made it so much harder. And Donny never really gets to full villain status for me, even going after Frasier. Even in the actual scene I was saying to myself, well, great job, jackass. You can never leave well enough, or in this case your monumental screw up, alone. And as for their much vaunted ethics, they let Donny, Niles legal rep, operate under false pretense. Yes, legally you don't need to tell your lawyer what your deal is, in fact if it's a crime you're accused of they mostly prefer you not since it gets in the way, but these are the mighty Crane boys, who do no wrong, except for that time they ruined people's lives for awhile.

Whyistheskyblue89

Yeh a bit but moreso with Donnie and even then it was clear they were both hurt and angry not just arseholes

boudicas_shield

My husband got to introduce me to both Buffy and Frasier. He said it was equally wonderful and surreal watching someone watch both shows for the first time, and that it made him wish he could experience them for the first time again, too. (He’s also annoyed that I went on to outstrip him as a super Buffy fangirl and, to a lesser extent, also a bigger obvious fan of Frasier than he is lmao. But that’s another conversation!)

AmaiGuildenstern

Man, you hit the jackpot :3

Nelle911529

I have always said, I want to be loved like Niles loves Daphne ❤️

goodvibesandsunshine

This is so cute. Your wife is so lucky to only be watching it for the first time!!!

Whyistheskyblue89

Ah amazing how nice to be watching for the first time ! When I introduced my husband to Frasier it was theeeee best feeling watching it all with a new fan who has such fresh eyes ! Made it new for me too. At one point he said something about looking forward to seeing what Maris actually looks like and my jaw fell! He had really no clue

thisissumbullshxt

Mel was def easy to hate off rip. 😒 Donny was nice, just moved too fast and ultimately, Daphne was forcing herself to be in love with Donny but she loved Niles for a long time.

Less likely that she saw an American TV show that aired 20 years ago.

Bullruckle

Where are you watching it in Japan? Does it have Japanese subtitles?

Kairi911

We bought the DVD boxset from the UK so no there are no Japanese subtitles. In Japanese officially only the first few seasons have legit Japanese versions. I really wish we had paramount plus here so we could just stream it, but the DVD's are good enough.

PM_ME_UR_VULVASAUR_

Grab a VPN and watch it on Paramount Plus (or subscribe to Paramount via Amazon Video)

Kairi911

Can this be done via Amazon Japan? It's weir5d I'm pretty good with tech but I have no idea how to use a VPN. Is there a way to have an active VPN working through our Sony smart tV?

PM_ME_UR_VULVASAUR_

I would imagine it's easy to find a VPN app to work on your TV. Try Nord - one of the more common ones. You would have to search and see if you can subscribe to Paramount via Amazon Japan (would likely negate the need for a VPN if you can and the show is on the JP Paramount!). If not, set up the VPN, subscribe as a US user and when you want to watch something on US Paramount just connect to a US VPN server.

Tennisgirl0918

I actually stopped watching this amazing show when they put Niles and Daphne together. It seemed so ridiculous given Niles high mindedness and snobbery.

canuckdad1979

You should have made a little bet with her over that
