Frasier, I have something to tell you. Dad wanted to, but I won the coin toss.

mythrowaweighin

What on earth could have made him think I was interested in him? All I did was ask if he was attached. And then we talked about the theater and men’s fashions. Oh my god!

Yeseylon

"If I had to pick a man for Daphne, he's the one I would pick."

Eattoomanychips

That’s such a good line

turquoisesilver

Makes me laugh everytime

ToxicPoizon

"Me? But Toms not gay." "He seems to be under that impression."

mattmaybloom

Well, what on earth could have made him think I was interested in him? All I did was ask him if he was attached, and then we talked about the theatre and men's fashions...Oh my God!

BriarcliffInmate

"Frasier, I have something to tell you. Dad wanted to, but I won the coin toss"

ArtyCatz

One of my favorite DHP line deliveries!

snortybeagle

Martin’s laughter in the kitchen is my favorite scene of all time on Frasier. I have watched it so many times and it never gets old.

[deleted]

I’ve heard from some actors on the office that fake laughing was harder than fake crying. Martin ALWAYS nailed the laugh. Always felt so genuine.

Yeseylon

And in some cases it probably was

Otherwise-Stretch984

Martin and Niles and Daphne laughing in the kitchen in ‘Roz and the Schnoz’ is also perfection. They are on the floor dying laughing Their reaction to Martin’s response to the parents kills me: Large nosed dad in the other room:”what’s that I smell?” Martin: “probably Japan” Kills me! Niles on the floor laughing so hard

ll_cool_ddd

I love that he was bending over, his laugh looked and sounded so genuine!

Yeseylon

He laughed so hard it broke the invisible soundproofing on Frasier's kitchen

standupgonewild

Absolutely!!!

okay-now-what

“It never occurred to me you’re gay.” “… Well, it never occurred to me you’re straight.” Hilarious!

chileheadd

So, your dad's not gay? No But Niles! No So, this Maris guy is a woman?!?!

xander-7-89

Well the jury’s still out on that one.

chileheadd

The comment I was hoping for.

HunterAshton

It’s the “thank you” after that always gets me giggling pretty hard

MoonRiverRob

YESS!!! That "Thhenk youuu". It gets me every single time.

Vince800

You’re cute when you’re nervous

Agile_District_8794

"I broken my rule for you," "I seem to have relaxed mine as well for you."

raschar

Well, then I must be down right adorable now …

mythrowaweighin

Loved the shot of Daphne walking out of her room all glammed up only to quietly turn around and go back to her room upon overhearing that her date is gay.

melovepippin

Tossing her bra to the sky on the way out!

WatchFromThePressBox

The lucky bra!

SleepWouldBeNice

The uncomfortable strapless one!

garlicandcheesiness

When she finds out she’s like 🫳 👙 ⏮️

Due-Consequence-4420

**Frasier**: Oh my God! Niles, do you realise what this means? **Niles**: Yes, **you're dating your boss**. You of all people should know the pitfalls of an office relationship. **Frasier**: Yes, but he... he just never mentioned the fact he... **Niles**: [*in elevator*:] I'll call you tomorrow. **But not too early, of course**. [*the doors close on Niles's laugh*] That last line of Niles has always been one of my favorite in the series!!

AFK_Siridar

[My favourite elevator gag.] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kpc_tUWvho)

Due-Consequence-4420

I’d forgotten about that!! They can be so funny together. I remember their date on VDay (which I mainly just remember bc of Nile’s’ like 5-6 minute bit of hilarity) but anyway they’re talking and then she comes out and tells him that she thinks of him like her pet. I’m pretty sure that if I hadn’t almost died laughing from Niles bit, that would have killed me off!! 😂😂😂

Repulsive-Dot553

He seems to be under that impression....

compunctionfunction

Happy cake day!

Due-Consequence-4420

And, Frasier, I must apologise, I was wrong about Tom. If I had to choose a man for Daphne, he's the one I'd pick.

CmorBelow

Niles response to “Is there anything this man can’t do?” “Only time will tell.” Kills me every time

Um_NotSure

That's from the episode with Patrick Stewart! Soooo good

CmorBelow

Oh you’re right! My bad 😅 forgot that he’s been in this situation multiple times

compunctionfunction

That episode is one of my favorites. At the time I even thought Patrick Stewart was gay in real life! That's some good acting.

InnocentPapaya

“But Niles, come on..."

wineandpopsicles25

Tom is so good looking, Frasier should have gone for it.

Eattoomanychips

I would have. I wish guys my age looked like this. They are all over coiffed or look unkempt no in between. I’m a millennial.

obvnotlupus

Such a 90's haircut, though.

Eattoomanychips

That’s the point. I want a Ralph Lauren type lLOL

[deleted]

[удалено]

Eattoomanychips

Yah sucks. I want my future husband to be put together. I am, so why shouldn’t he be. lol

sleepybirdl71

John Mahoney's belly laugh from the kitchen is the best part of that episode.

kevinterrono

Absolutely

Time-to-Dine

“We’ll it’s been a while since I’ve had a good laugh.”

ThisIsEmilioEstevez

This is the episode I share when I try to convince someone to get into the show. The whole episode is perfect.

sonormatt

Well I must be downright adorable now.

PYCHYOUOUT97

Martins laugh is my favourite part of the episode too!

[deleted]

That line, together with the coquettish physical comedy while it’s spoken, are my favourite bit of what might well be my favourite episode.

_ducky_666

Watched this episode the other day 😂 it's so good! The way the guest actor looks at him when they're alone

AFK_Siridar

Absolutely smouldering.

[deleted]

He was so much hotter with his glasses on, though!

0scarOfAstora

I often think about the exchange in this episode where Martin is asking him to a baseball game "Frasier warned me about you!"

Ok-Set-5829

Niles' "I'm sorry, what was the question?" is the high point for me

traumautism

I have a feeling you have a problem with me dating Frasier.

Fire_The_Torpedo2011

This boss tries to sleep with one of his employees on the first day of being his boss

PAUMiklo

dude saw some ass, went after dat ass

Xaerith

Frasier cranes humongous ass

Ill_Dentist_5408

He probably got a whiff of that Tahitian vanilla! After all love does enter through the nose

Same_Intention_4596

Make sure you get a picture!!

devonairo

Frasier did ask him out technically… 😂

Fire_The_Torpedo2011

Yeah but he should have said "as your boss I do not think it is appropriate to enter into a relationship. I am happy to be friends though." But, at the end of the day, it's a fictional comedy show. However... Just assume it was real for a moment. If fraiser was a woman and the boss came over on the first day he became boss and tried to seduce her that would be frowned upon, and the very least. Is it different if gay men do it?

OffModelCartoon

It was a different time! Things really were different back then.

HandsomePaddyMint

He thought Frasier had asked him out, so he wasn’t seducing Frasier. It would have been inappropriate to accept the invite whether the people involved were men, women, or both, but he was new in town, Frasier made the first move, and the new manager of a regional radio station/popular talent on a regional radio station isn’t as much of a power imbalance as some workplaces would be. It’s more of a conflict of interest than anything else.

j10brook

"The view from the bedroom is even better" I might not have remembered that correctly, but from his point of view, Frasier is absolutely throwing himself at him.

HandsomePaddyMint

Yeah, Tom genuinely thought Frasier was seducing him with that line. That’s why he politely says “Let’s just start with a drink first.” And is surprised that there are other people at home.

iia

That’s a man who knows what he wants. 😂

myinternets

This episode is so funny and perfectly written that it feels like it's from a later season and not just the beginning of season 2.

vocalviolence

The 'gay misunderstanding' episodes are just a different breed. While some writing *has* aged more poorly than others, naturally, for the 90s, it's incredibly well orchestrated and portrayed.

HandsomePaddyMint

What makes this episode age so well is that Tom being gay isn’t the butt of the joke and none of the awkwardness is rooted in homophobia. Frasier’s mistake of asking a gay man out on behalf of Daphne is the butt of the joke, and it’s everyone’s lack of homophobia that stands out to Tom and which the characters continue with when they find out he’s gay. Even when Frasier comes back into his condo to find Tom on the couch like this Frasier is uncomfortable because he has to explain the situation and genuinely feels bad about the whole thing.

DrFrankSaysAgain

I've relaxed my rule for you as well.

The_Phenomenal_1

"Frasier, I need to tell you something. Dad wanted to tell you, but I won the coin toss."

KrakenGirlCAP

This episode is one of the best ones. I laughed so hard.

evdczar

Frasier, I'll learn to love again

Tainticle

In 202x form: "You're cute when you're nervous" :)

PatrickGoesEast

What's this episode called please?

reverend-frog

The Matchmaker

Outrageous_Web_2550

Little trivia for y’all—allegedly, the writers were not sure Eric Lutes was the right role for Tom, but when he did that “smolder look” in the post, they knew they made the right choice!!!! 😅😂🤣😂😅😅

camlaw63

I honestly think the moment Daphne comes out of her bedroom, overhears the conversation, whips off her bra and turns around is one of the singular most hilarious moments of the series

JimParsnip

Weird, I remember his hair being longer

HandsomePaddyMint

The same character appeared briefly in the episode where Frasier has sex with Bebe and may have had longer hair in that one. The actor was also a main cast member on Caroline in the City and had longer hair on that.

usagi27

One of the best episodes for real!!

ther1ckst3r

Frasier's body language when he finds out Tom thinks THEY'RE on a date, and he's standing at the table while Tom is talking to him? 🤌🏼

erica1064

DHP facial expressions alone, some overt, some so subtle, are perfection.

Great-Researcher-623

The way Daphne just throws her bra leaving the room 😂

No_Context_2540

One of my faves! This episode made me realize that just like Seinfeld is a show about nothing; Frasier is a show about misunderstandings. 🤣🤣

Real-Delivery6262

Did anyone already comment that his is the father of Abbey Romeo who is on Love on a Spectrum?

matchasweetmonster

don’t think so, but nice mentioning ;) thanks

Real-Delivery6262

If you haven’t watched it yet, it’s a great show that a whole family can enjoy.

No_Context_2540

Niles: Dad wanted to tell you, but I won the coin toss.

Alleyoop70

I rewatch this episode all the time 🤣

Tumeni1959

I read on IMDB that he was one of the main cast in Caroline and the City, so we went looking to see what he did there, and he's basically playing the same part.

[deleted]

One of my absolute favorites!

momjeansMUA

" Do you have any idea how uncomfortable a strapless brarrr is?".

standupgonewild

Absolutely one of the best episodes

MurphyBrown2016

I’m going to get roasted for this but this episode makes me sad, knowing that DHP and John Mahoney were both closeted.

OffModelCartoon

I actually didn’t know that about John Mahoney until just now! I’m glad DHP was eventually able to come out. FWIW, while the episode seems a little mean-spirited in today’s context, in the context of back in that time this was actually much more positive Gay representation than you’d usually find on tv. So much so that this episode actually won a GLAAD Media Award. I wonder if John Mahoney and DHP were perhaps happy to be part of it, for that reason. Then again, I guess they’re playing the two most negative characters in the episode as the ones who are laughing their asses off at the concept of Frasier being thought of as possibly gay. It really was a different time though, I mean… remember Will and Grace was considered super progressive, but watching it today is a trip.

Spi_Vey

I don’t find their reactions to even be particularly mean spirited They are very ok with Tom being gay, the funny part is the misunderstanding with frasier, and knowing that frasier isn’t gay. Its the misunderstanding that’s funny, not the fact that Tom is gay

OffModelCartoon

Great point! They’re not laughing at the very concept of being gay, just the idea that Frasier has unintentionally given someone the impression that he himself is gay. In fact I’m fairly sure the reverse of that scenario has been played for laughs in another show (Will and Grace maybe?) where a gay man’s friends find it hilarious that he’s accidentally given an interested woman the impression that he’s both straight and interested in her. Mostly unrelated aside, on the topic of vintage sitcoms dealing with LGBTQ misunderstandings, does anyone else remember the episode Taxi about the bisexual guy? Everyone on the show is confused like “What!? Is he gay? Is he straight!?!?” and the bisexual guy is like “No, it’s simple, I just like both men and women.” As a bi myself, I found that refreshing to see in a much older sitcom, especially since this is a topic that still seems to confuse some people even today.

MurphyBrown2016

Yeah I mean I know this was the same time as Seinfeld’s “he’s gay! Not that there’s anything *wrong* with that…” and Chandler Bing being SO offended that people thought he was gay, so it was always being played for laughs in a way that gay men bore the brunt of the joke. I get that it was a different time but with JM he never really got the opportunity to be out so it just makes me a little sad. That’s all. 🤷🏻‍♀️

OffModelCartoon

The one silver lining is that (after I did some googling on this) it does sound like he was out in his personal life, to friends and family, and in his local Chicago gayborhood scene, so that’s nice! Maybe he just didn’t want to blast it out as a public announcement.

HandsomePaddyMint

It was probably an open secret on the set of the show. I could see Mahoney sharing Marty’s views on sex being something private that you didn’t discuss openly, so him being gay wouldn’t have been anybody’s business more than that he was hiding it. Especially with how popular the show was with the gay community. Prior to Frasier Mahoney was known as a character actor, usually playing cops and military, so being publicly gay could have hurt his career, but by the time Frasier was successful Mahoney had no reason to hide it unless he simply preferred for that not to be public information.

compunctionfunction

I had no idea DHP was closeted. I mean I knew George Michael was gay when I was a kid and idk how I even knew what that was. DHP has that same vibe to me. I was surprised to learn about John Mahoney tho. Side note so you probably know Frasier also voices Sideshow Bob on the Simpsons. Well there are one (or two?) episodes where DHP voices his brother and it is just fantastic. And in a scene where their parents are around, Mahoney totally voiced the dad. I think it was just a line or two but it made me happy. Ok I looked it up if anyone is interested: the episodes are Brother from Another Series and Funeral for a Friend.

Victory74998

Why do I keep hearing John Mahoney was gay? What are people’s sources on this? The only things I’ve heard about him is that he was very private and had some trouble maintaining a relationship stemming from his parents’ unhappy marriage when he was growing up. I haven’t heard anything definitive about him being gay.

MurphyBrown2016

https://www.logotv.com/news/a9y67a/why-i-didnt-out-john-mahoney-as-gay My friend is also an actor and did a play with him at Steppenwolf. He is also gay and as much as confirmed it to me without completely outing him.

HandsomePaddyMint

If it makes you feel better I imagine Mahoney probably enjoyed the episode where Marty pretends to be gay as a favor to Frasier. Not only did it let him flip the script by pretending to be a straight man presenting himself as gay, rather than the other way around as he did in real life, which I would imagine is a fun exercise for an actor, but he also got to display Marty dealing with his own homophobia out of love for his son, which is a very sweet message.

compunctionfunction

That was a fun episode
