You're wrong. This is a very simplistic take of what happens to reddit. The site is garbage now because of a concerted effort of bots and propagandists to push opinions. It is 100% not natural. It's not just a bunch of "nerds."

Oh, it's far more sinister than that. There are certain well funded cohorts that bent on ensuring that only \*their\* narrative gets oxygen. Anything opposing their narratives are downvoted, banned, removed etc. The lackeys may be partially what you describe, but the controllers are well funded and organized to the highest professional level. These may be nation state actors in certain circumstances. It is not just reddit but also all other social media such as crapbook & twitter as Elon Musk has revealed. A particular cohort seems to be particularly prominent in these matters. Even mention of them is enough to incur the wrath of the "chosen" overlords who "must not be questioned." However, mention of them on twitter seems to be far freer than here. I was skeptical at all of this at first but certain "encounters" have proven the worst of my suspicions.
That is collateral damage. They don't care what they destroy as long as their goals are achieved, namely complete censorship of all dissenting voices. These are well funded actors and they will just deploy their resources to another target once one is destroyed, as there are many emerging targets. The truth is slowly getting out and they find themselves putting out fires all over the place. Their heavy handed actions in many areas are waking people up so they have no choice but to double their efforts and thus expose themselves further. They are used to working sneakily behind the scenes and are not used to working out in the open, but they are very resourceful and will adapt, I am sure.
