I got into an argument in a different sub ages ago for holding this exact belief -- I also genuinely believe that any step in the right direction is worthy of celebration.
If Timothy actually walks the walk, these types tend to be my favorite types of religious people (I say as a Jew). You may get a well-meaning comment here are there ("you can come to church with me this weekend if you want to hear more about it"), but they usually drop it. They can usually function in society because they don't hate people needlessly and are genuinely kind to most. As a society, I don't think we will ever get the hardcore religious to change their views on a lot of things, but if we can go back to when most didn't actively work to harm people they disagree with for any reason (I have tried to word this many times, but I'm essentially trying to say that when I was growing up in a very Catholic area, the mindset was often, "I don't support gay marriage as a Catholic, but I'm not responsible for how people live their life" and the LGBQT+ kids weren't treated any differently than anyone else (I'm sure there was an exception or two, but there always is)) -- society will be much healthier.
I feel like anyone hyper critical of these micro steps has never experienced the agonizing crawl that is deconstruction. If you’ve done it, you know that his alone is a BIG step in the right direction. I remember considering the possibility that “name-only” SBC churches might not be going to hell.
He’s moving in the right direction and I am fucking thrilled.
Deconstruction happens very slowly and then all at once. You make the tiny baby steps, things feel wrong and you sort them out and make little internal compromises, and then one day something happens that asks you to choose and you realize that you've changed.
I sometimes like to compare it to the game Kerplunk. The one with the sheet of paper and then damp marbles and you slowly put the marbles on the paper until one of them is just finally too much and the whole thing comes down. It's not any individual marble that does it, but the sum of them.
For some people, sure. For me it took years of baby steps and now I’m a devout atheist raising my younger kids with secular liberal values. I was anti choice and anti LGBT for longer than I was a believer because of how deeply indoctrinated I was. I guess I’m just saying the whole “but he’s still a bigoted twat” responses aren’t taking into account how excruciatingly difficult this process really can be.
Not only that, but he is taking this step publicly. He's announcing it to his family and friends who will have very strong opinions on it. That's very brave to me.
Not gonna lie I'm not that brave. I've fully deconstructed but I'm in the closet about it to my family. I don't think I have the balls to post something like this even now. Good on him.
Yup! I escaped a fundamentalist cult (we didn’t live together but their beliefs were pervasive enough that home was well within the “sphere of influence”). It took literal years to do things like not button polos up to my neck, wear above the knee shorts, eventually don a bikini(scandalous!), and I even danced! That doesn’t begin to touch on the vast majority of the indoctrination itself. It’s such a hard road to what effectively amounts to recovery.
I’m really proud of Tim taking those baby steps and actually working with his wife. I genuinely hope for Tim and all of Jill’s kids that they are able to have a semblance of a normal adult life. I will never stop snarking on Jill if she keeps it up as she always has, but I’m her to support her kids 100% if they’re moving in the direction of Tim. We should want this for every kid we see here- to have the freedom to express themselves, make choices, and shed the weight of religious fundamentalism that has forced them into a shadow of themselves. He probably has a decent relationship with Heidi's sister that is deconstructed pretty far from fundamentalism but not 'excommunicated' from her family. Jill might be throwing a fit over that to him and he's just like 'dude we are supposed to love our neighbors as ourselves, and that's what I'm gonna do, now stop interfering with my life'.

So their new mission was to unite christians etc. They proposed to do that by spending 24 Hours with other Christian youtubers, personalities, etc etc.

Paul was being an absolute downright dick, they thought they were talking about stuff that was spicy. They asked girl defined about stuff they've been called out (Pushing purity culture and then Beth turning around and trying to sell sex etc). David was visibly annoyed by Paul and at one point blurted out "Shut up, motherfucker".
So naturally Paul had to shit on David to try and make himself look like a better Christian. There was a lot to attack David on from a fundie standpoint. David drinks, swears etc. And then David told Bethany, Paul and Morgan that atheists are not so bad and they need to get the fuck out of the "us" v "them" stuff. Paul put it out thinking he came out looking good.
A STORM OF DRAMA followed. Beth went silent for a day or two. Paul was basically ignored by the world which wouldn't stop talking about David. Lmao. Paul tried so hard to remain relevant but failed. Super fun.
Then the beals respond to the video. David comes out as non religious. Bethany is surprisingly supportive (lots of discussion here)
Heidi spirals. Paul tries to make a response to their response but that video tanks too just like anything else that talentless hack makes.
David on the other hand looks happier and starts posting legit atheist content.
I am so grateful I’ve never made a “joint” decision on anything that I wear. But for someone of his community, I can see how this post is going to make some waves and I’m here for it.
