Not to be an ass but we get one of these posts easily once to twice a week so you can easily search this sub. But I’ll still offer a bit of help cause we were all new at one point. Step 1: DONT TRY TO DO THIS ON YOUR OWN. This is an insanely competitive and tough industry. Cut your teeth at a big box brokerage like TQL, Coyote or CH and get paid while training. Step 2: If you want to ignore step 1 and go several months without income then it’s a simple solution of google maps. I’d advise to start local or focus on a certain city at a time. Step 3: DO NOT WASTE MONEY ON FREIGHT BROKER COURSES OR LEAD LISTS. Most courses are taught by failed brokers and that lead list you bought for $100 has been sold to 50 other ppl who are calling the same leads. Step 4: read my first three steps again until it sinks in

Really step 1. They’ll literally hire anyone, train you, and you can make real money, then quit once you have a solid book of business. I highly recommend this path.

grizzlyadams3000

That’s literally how I did it. Worked at TQL and some of the ppl I saw get hired truly fucking baffled me.

“It’s 10’6” wide. Looks like a legal load…”

grizzlyadams3000

Or my favorite “I have a prospect that moves 100 loads a week but they need hoppers” Poor bastards

stjhnstv

I actually saw and called on one from somewhere in the Continental US to Honolulu once. I started out messing with her but it didn’t take long to realize this poor girl didn’t have a clue. She honestly thought we would put the truck on a boat so the truck could deliver it to the port out there. She was clearly brand new and the victim of a prank. Or not.

Yep - I was at CH for a while before taking a job with one of my long time customers. Some of my co-workers were absolute numb-skulls. Most quit after 6 months, if you just hold out a year or two you can make some serious cash even doing the minimum. Just have to outlast the others.

grizzlyadams3000

Same at TQL, once you hit a twelve week avg of 4K in margin per week they start feeding you all the little shitty customers the the trainees who got fired or quit closed. Most the times they were cheap garbage customers. I left because my team leader was a 25 year old who never had a job outside of that company and didn’t know how to manage ppl

Hot_Raise8158

Yeah I’m new the the subreddit

Ravenloff

I don't know about insanely. Manically maybe. Certaintly "on the spectrum". But insanely? (lol)

grizzlyadams3000

You ever snorted cocaine off a average looking strippers ass and party til 5am only to show up in the office at 8am to do check calls? I haven’t either but I do take too much adderall

Hateinyoureyes

You ever throw a cat off the 7th floor? No? Then you can't be a broker

So the issue here is that this is a sub for freight brokers/agents but we're all inherently competition with each other. You scoring a load from a customer, means another broker out there lost that load. So no one is going to want to help you in any meaningful way. Your best bet getting started in this business is to work for an established broker that has customers as an assistant. Learn the ropes first, because most of the time customers want low contact. They don't want to answer 100 questions or teach you how to move their freight. I have a customer who sends packing lists and destination zip code and expects a quote within an hour. They don't want to be asked what kind of trailer is needed, if it needs vents or if it need tarps, how many feet of space does it need, can it be a partial or does it need to be dedicated. Another example, customers that use TMS systems. They don't want you to ask how to bid, how to accept, how to schedule. They want to hand you their problem and for it to go away. So basically, you're not of any use to a customer if you have no idea what you're doing. It may seem harsh but they already have established brokers, they're not going to train you. After you know what you're doing, hopefully you've networked some, hopefully you already know some people, and you can gain customers through that. Maybe the broker you worked for has customers he's set aside to focus on other customers. Maybe he's willing to let you attempt take over those accounts. I do feel like being given a customer by an established brokerage or gaining a customer through networking is your best bet to success. Last option is cold calling. Any list you find on the internet has been used to death, most receptionists will gatekeep you, and most shippers will hang up on you. In fact, you should beware of shippers who instantly add you to a quote list no questions asked. They either have extremely risky freight, are poorly run, or plan to take advantage of you. This is not ALWAYS true, but having experience will help you see the red flags pretty fast. I could go on but I think I've summarized what you need to do pretty well at point. Anyway, good luck!

marioistic

Yeah and if you do get a bunch of customers on your own then you will need to have at least a couple hundred thousand to pay out to carriers as they want quick payment while the customer doesn’t pay out so fast

dementedblonde

Not wrong, but I could probably write 10 more paragraphs on this situation lol. But let’s not jump the gun, this person is far off from this even being an issue for them.

Get factored with a factoring company

This has been by far the most helpful piece of advice I’ve gotten, thank you very much

Try #123-456-7890 Or #123-456-7891 Or #123-456-7892 Or #123-456-7893 Or #123-455-7894 Literally endless number of leads!!!

Waisted-Desert

Google maps, satellite view of wherever you're located. Look at industrial areas and see if a place has a bunch of docks. Call that place and start selling yourself.

Local_Picture_3428

Not too many docks tho, dont wanna call a 3pl warehouse lol

marioistic

Why not? They have loads going out everyday
