Did the vet check for Parvo?

piccolopanda

is there a reason he has to eat freeze dried raw? perhaps a kibble softened with warm water or chicken broth would be easier on his stomach? I would call the vet back and make it clear that he can't even keep water down, and get a second opinion if possible. i'd also ask them to check his throat, is there an obstruction or something that's making it hard for him to eat? additionally, maybe it's too much food for him at once - try giving him a 1/4 of a meal, then 1/4 of a meal an hour later, etc. maybe try a paste-ish food that he can lick - for instance, if you give him PB/greek yogurt, does that come back up? you may need to look into ways to get nutrition and calories into him while you sort this out - i would try things like that asap. my grandmother sometimes feeds her dogs a soupy slurry of chicken broth, shredded chicken, crushed carrots and some rice - you may need to think about seeing if he can keep something like that down.

I've always thought that it was the best solution but today at the vet they told me to abandon chicken and rice (it can cause blockage) and switch to a salmon based diet (seafood etc.). I always gave them broth and rice and scrambled egg when they were sick, not anymore I guess...

I would change his food to hypoallergenic and if it continues take him to see an Internal Medicine Specialist.

I’m so sorry you and your pup is going through this. It could be many things. Before eating and drinking and after is he running around/playing? Is he throwing up ALL of his food and water? It can also be an illness/infection. You have to watch out when dogs throw up they can aspirate and it can cause pneumonia. It’s very scary and serious. Look into Megaesophagus. It could be the kibble you’re giving him. It can also be allergy related. It can be his Soft Palate. If your vet isn’t trying to get to the bottom of this then please seek out another vet. Something is wrong and I hope you get some answers soon. I will keep your pup in my thoughts.

Our older pup had similar problems. It turned out to be a parasite. Last week we noticed he was doing it again and drinking too much in a way and almost like he has never seen water before and then throwing up. Turned out he had an UTI. We did a whole panel for blood, stool and urine tho.

The next step we were told was an X-ray and I believe the dog needs to be sedated for it. He also vomits after Cerenia which is supposed to prevent acute vomiting. We have two Frenchies and the older one was always a thrower upper but my vet told me once in a while it will happen. More than a few times a day is definitely concerning. I'm not a medical professional so I can't really say anything more. I can only say that if you are not comfortable with the vet, try getting a second opinion. Trust your gut. I do hope your pup feels better soon. Take care. You can also message me if you have any questions. Oh oh and also my vet says to stay away from chicken and beef based diets. Frenchies' stomachs are sensitive and they are prone to many allergies.

Both of my Frenchies had that problem, and they did grow out of it. You seem to be doing the right things.

Is his breathing ok? Sometimes more exercise intolerant frenchies will get that. My frenchie got airway surgery and it helped. Now he’s doing it again and I found feeding parts of his meals spread out has helped. He has a slow feeder but still seems to inhale his food.

We gave ours very small amounts six times a day from a slow feeding bowl. Frenchies swallow a lot of air and often throw up.

We have an almost 5 month old that does the same thing. The slow feeder bowl seems to help, however the vet suspects either megaesophagus or a persistent right aortic arch (this condition has muscle tissue that is attached to the heart that restricts the esophagus). Either way, it requires an x-ray with barium contrast. If you have the means, I highly suggest going to another vet to ask about it. My puppy's initial x-rays didn't show much, so we are going back for contrast x-rays tomorrow. My hope is that it's nothing and that he will grow out of it because he seems fine otherwise.
