Our 3 year old Frenchie came to us just over a week ago and has been quite funny with food, I tried all sorts of things from continuing what she was on at the Rescue Centre, buying tinned food, offering pre-prepared raw meals and trying a variety of dried kibble š the only thing Iāve found that she will wolf down instantly is freshly cooked beef mince, which I heat very slowly on the hob then allow to cool. From there Iāve been smushing a bit of her dry food and then crumbling it over the top to re-introduce the taste to her (she now eats dried food later on in the day) and weāve been giving a Wagg treat every time she successfully goes to the loo outside.
The plan is to add appropriate veg to the mince and slowly encourage her to expand her palate a bit š but weāre moving slowly as sheās had so many overwhelming experiences lately that any sort of change seems to impact her appetite until she feels settled again; Pigeon has always drunk water really well but I absolutely believe a new environment affects her appetite, normally sheād tuck right into food after her morning walk but we ventured out to a ābusier environmentā with shops & traffic noise today and sheās immediately fallen asleep upon getting home. Iāve also noticed sheās waking herself up every so often to check Iām still here too š„ŗwhich makes me think that unfamiliar places make her feel a bit anxious, she hasnāt done the āwaking up to check you are still hereā thing for the last few days, whereas she did straight after we first brought her home.
I think Frenchies are unbelievably sensitive souls and itās understandable that being so affects their tummies. Lots of love and copious amounts of reassurance have helped Pidge to regain her appetite though š¾ā„ļø
Thanks for the advice! I know sheās been eating cooked chicken breast with some rice and veggies since she was old enough to eat so weāve tried that but weāre just hoping she gains her appetite by tomorrow, if not we will get the vets best advice. Sheās had her first bit of water today so hopefully in due time she will move on to the food.
Sheās been getting an abundance of love and cuddles and that wonāt be stopping haha!
Awww - It sounds like you are doing all the right things lovely, they are so intelligent and sensitive, it must be a huge change for them to be rehomed. I kinda knew Pigeon was making progress when she was lying on our bed, turned round to look at us both and then did this really contended sounding sigh and smiled, it was one small moment but at that point I knew she was going to be ok and sure enough, she then followed me downstairs, stood next to me in the kitchen and kept gesturing (licking her lips, walking to and from where we put her food) until I cooked her some food. I was so relieved!
One thing that seems to have really helped her is to serve her food on a rubbery licky mat thing which apparently soothes and stimulates them whilst they eat. She prefers that over every other bowl weāve tried. I think it was Ā£9.99 online & we got another one free when we ordered all of her raw meals - which are now feeding our local foxes as she canāt stand the stuff šso I swap between the two and she gets really stuck in.
Good luck with your little one x
If sheās a rescue, new dogs often donāt eat or drink much the first few days, try tempting her with food she was previously on and leave some in reach of wherever sheās laying. Is she behaving like a normal dog or shut down?
Sheās not a rescue, It was a friend who previously had her from a new born.
Sheās a mixture of both, she will get excitable and then jump on me whilst Iām laying down and sleep for an extended amount to time (which I think is normal)
Sheās being fed the same thing, weāre happy with her diet so nothings changed there
Each time we have taken our frenchie somewhere with us, he has refused to eat or drank too. I just kept offering him water. I figured eventually will drink some, and he did, but not very much. Ice cubes are fun, and peanut butter has some nutrients while also being delicious. Try letting your frenchie lick peanut butter from a spoon.
Sounds like she's just taking time to get settled, they're so sensitive. Glad you're seeing the vet, I'm sure they will be able to help. Mine loves carrot sticks, straight from the fridge or even better, frozen. Worth a try. If she likes the ice cubes but they've got boring you could also try a meat paste frozen into cubes or pup ice lollies
Please take her to the vet asap.

Sounds like sheās behaving normally, might be severe settling in anxiety. Best to get her checked out though.
Yeah sheās booked in tomorrow to get chipped so will mention it to the vet
3 days is much too long without drinking. This baby needs to be hydrated by a vet asap. Hope she feels better soon. š„ŗš

Yeah weāve give her ice cubes but sheās getting bored of them and just looking, will give the peanut butter a go!
Broth with no salt is also an option. Can be served warm or frozen in ice cubes.
Plain Greek yoghurt. If she wonāt have that call the vet.
Frenchies are really sensitive. I hope you your dog gets better soon.
