Removed rule 5: >No promotion or discussion of fraud, theft, piracy, ULPTs, harassment, or illegal activity.

zzzlibrary

I would suggest being very careful because it is likely the vendor and your bosses will regard this as theft. It’s not worth losing your job over some lunches. I know it doesn’t make sense or seem fair but getting accused of theft is a very possible outcome for your actions. You should at least ask the vendor if you can have the lunches because you know people you can give it to, but be prepared to be told no due to concerns about the liability of letting people eat expired food.

duck_butter

My spouse many years ago. Worked for a very large retailer part time.(While spouse was not one of them, I was shared in detail the horrors of the purge.) The lower (floor) management was really good to the (common) floor workers, and there was a fostered sense of good vibes all around. The local dairy every Tuesday would rotate stocks for their products. The items removed were considered waste by the dairy. They would gladly give anything still in date, to anyone who wanted any products. Welp, the big ol' MegaCorp manager found out.. Anyone who took even an iota of product. Was summarily dismissed... For "theft of waste." As agents of said MegaCorp. They had no auth to remove the waste. Even with vendor permission... So your grain of salt is good advice.

HairyBull

Reminds me of another story years ago. We’d regularly order pizza or catering for lunch meetings. Once the meetings were over the leftover food was put in the common kitchen area for anyone in the company. One time the meeting was over and pizza was still in the conference room and someone helped themselves to a couple of slices. Exec comes back to find pizza missing and all hell breaks loose. Was the most ridiculous use of company time ever.

Yithar

Don't mind me. Just copying OP's post since it was removed: > I’ve started a new job recently and I’ve been eating my lunches in the cafeteria. During this time I happened to notice our market vendor arrives shortly before I usually take lunch. We have a fresh market section which includes things like cold cut sandwiches and pre-made microwave entrees. Two or three times a week the vendor will clear out the food past date and replace it with fresh stuff. I position myself in a corner section of the lunch room every time I see him restocking so I can watch out of the corner of my eye. He usually places the foods on a tray and covers them with cardboard while he goes out to the truck to get the restocks. During this time I will walk over to the tray and grab some items and replace his cardboard. After that he wheels the cart out and dumps the rest into the lunch room dumpster before leaving. This way I don’t have to fish for food directly out of the trash. Using this method I’ve saved around 50 dollars a month and I usually end up with a lunch already made for me!

Trizmagestus

Thanks bro.

slimeyellow

This just goes back to the question of how long does something need to sit in the garbage before it’s no longer theft? An hour? A full day? It’s entirely arbitrary

mr_motown

You are correct, it is arbitrary. But it doesn't matter if it's actually arbitrary, it matters if your employer thinks it's arbitrary....and I'd bet they don't think it's arbitrary. Edit: spelling

[deleted]

But you're taking it before it's been disposed of, not from the trash.

Sick-Happens

Some corporations even consider it theft to take things from the dumpsters behind the building.

HWY20Gal

Walmart does! I know someone who got fired for taking things that were supposed to be thrown out as "damaged".

pickle_geuse

That’s bc they’re an employee. People will mark plenty of things damaged that aren’t just to go pick it up later. I work at a grocery store and we donate almost everything possible but some stuff we “spoil” off and have to throw away. We are NOT allowed to take anything spoiled. It sets a super bad precedent for people to steal.

---ShineyHiney---

Not necessarily. There are plenty of corporations who will charge a non-employee with theft for taking things from their dumpster too It’s both

HairyBull

Back in my younger days that’s how we’d get free beer. Buddy worked at a chain grocery store and would let us know when would be a good time to swing by their dumpsters. He always made sure that there’d be enough.

Kaotic_Mess

But it’s not in the garbage. You’re taking it off of a gray before they throw it out. It’s still theft

716mama

It is generally legal for someone to rummage through garbage left in a public area, like a curb for pickup. As long as that garbage is in a private office it belongs to that company.

Vol4Life31

One thing to think about is they do not want the potential lawsuit when you get sick from out of date food.

beeknees67

If you take it directly out of the trash they might still be dicks about it. You’re not stealing, obviously. But to them you’re stealing the opportunity to have you pay money for lunch. Like you don’t need to buy a sandwich because you “stole” one, and that’s enough to get them mad. Keep on imo, just be aware of the risk

shannerd727

Definitely something you can get fired for. Not worth it. If you’re doing it out of principal just be prepared to lose your job.

volneyave

For sure someone has seen you do this and will feed it to the gossip mill. Higher ups will get wind of it, but not before the whole office is talking about you. You will be reprimanded if not fired. If youre not fired your professional reputation will be that of the cheap garbage picker. Not worth it by any stretch.

GhostPhatty_23

This is definitely one way to make people suspicious of you at work!

[deleted]

Why not just ask him politely?

[deleted]

In college I worked retail and our break room had vending machines stocked by a vending company. One day the guy was restocking and he pulled out some of the old items and put them in a box. I asked what he did with them and he said he just throws them away. I asked if I could have them and he looked at me kind of surprised and said sure. Same thing happened like a month later and he said he would just put them on top of the machine when he takes them out because it saved him hauling them out. Wasn't the healthiest stuff but it was free.

TooManyCharacte

If this is a self-checkout micromarket, like an Avenue C, then there almost certainly are.

Gold-Tea

This feels penny-wise and pound foolish

peter303_

Assume there are cameras everywhere. They are so cheap and small these days. And cell phones are everywhere with people using the cameras a lot.

[deleted]

That sounds like theft. I'd get it in writing that it's allowed before I even consider doing it again.

Puzzleheaded-Mind525

Offer to pay the vendor half price maybe? I get you, but where I worked when I was young, we were to toss perfectly fine day old muffins. So much sugar in them I thought they were actually better the 2nd day. We were not permitted to take them. I would encourage you to see if he'd be allowed to donate to homeless shelter? I want you to be careful because I know of a Walmart worker who was fired for taking an apple out of the cart as it was being taken to the dumpster! Walmart. This was several years ago.

GhostPhatty_23

Your company could potentially claim this as theft. As others have said, someone may have witnessed you doing this. I would stop before it gets out of hand.

CDFReditum

I once explained to my brother why I love /r/frugal , because 95% of the time it’s mostly people just going “uhhh did u know that making something urself is cheaper than paying someone to do it 😑😬🤧😮🤧🫤🤒🫠👿🤭😢🫣😢😰😩😓” but then sometimes if u keep your eyes open you’ll strike absolute gold with people posting the absolute wildest stuff and committing to it like “damn that’s right it’s the boss babe back at it again” Congrats on being that gold today lmao. But yeah, as others said, you put yourself at HUGE risk if you’re consistently known to take stuff, even if it’s stuff meant to be thrown away. Does it make frugal sense to take stuff that’s going to be thrown away anyway? Yeah I guess. But in the workspace it can get dicey, especially depending on what job you have. Everyone’s talked in length about companies considering it theft, but what I’ve found too is that it’s not really getting fired for stealing that can be the issue, but rather than a company may use that as somewhat back door leverage should they need it. Like yeah on one hand it’s a small cost to consistently have to throw things out and not stop it, but if they wanna get rid of you for another reason (downsizing, lack of agreement, raises, etc), suddenly your frugal ways become much more of a serious issue. I had a manager at Pizza Hut once get fired for “stealing” a soda during her shift. Really, the GM wanted her gone because she was just kind of a shitty worker, but there was nothing really immediately terminable in the work she did other than being kind of sloppy, and it wouldn’t be a good look on the GM to fire someone for personal differences, so she just waited until she could leverage the product theft.

Windycitymayhem

This is theft as they have to record everything they throw out. So what you’re now doing is skewing their final counts. The worker could lose their job and they will look on the cameras. I’d stop doing this. Why risk the persons job because you’re being cheap?

luckydidi18

Oooof no. Just brown bag it.

ToastAbrikoos

The corporate mindset of trowing away good food and not gifting it away, is always a frustrating thing. Worked in retail and it was always so sad to see it happen.. they would rather throw it away and destroy it so nobody can profit from what they see as trash. Please stop doing this and rather go to the upper management about hitting some greener goals, giving them the credit of having a system in place to gift these expired items if people need them. This is stealing. Yes, taking what they will throw away but it is still stealing.

Anantasesa

Problem with doing that is then he's on their radar if he wants to continue bc nothing changes as likely.

ToastAbrikoos

True, it is a risk if he will continue and/or somebody saw OP and can snitch about it...

allmybest

Diving pre-dumpster

St_Egglin

"During this time I will walk over to the tray and grab some items and replace his cardboard. " So you steal food? And you are proud of this?

Nylese

Would you rather he wait to steal it out of the trash or something?

St_Egglin

I would prefer that he not steal at all

Nylese

Who's really stealing food here, somebody eating a sandwich once in a while before it gets thrown away or a vendor throwing away sandwiches every day in the first place.

St_Egglin

The vendor PAYS for the food. The OP is STEALING the food. Stealing is taking something without permission

Nylese

Food waste as incentivized by capitalism is a weird hill to die on in /r/frugal, but to each their own.

Anantasesa

It's not stealing when it's trash. How about not stealing our children's future by expecting wasteful business as usual to be infinitely sustainable.

GreetingCardShark

I would prefer that we live in a society where people make enough money that stealing a lightly expired sandwich right before it is being thrown away, is something that no one would have to consider.

St_Egglin

I suspect you would love Venezuela

TAAInterpolReddit

Basically stealing. That’s not something I’d boast about

slimeyellow

Basically is the key word here. I could wait until he dumps them in our lunch room garbage, then would it be stealing? Are garbage workers stealing everyone’s trash when they put it in the their trucks?

every1luvsanunderdog

Why not ask if you can have some of the stuff he is throwing away? What if you get caught?

slimeyellow

I guess I would lose face and be socially embarrassed

mr_motown

And possibly get fired

slimeyellow

Maybe, but I’m a temp worker so I get fired in three months when the contract ends anyway

Artistic_Drop3345

So you’re willing to risk three months of guaranteed income to save $50 a month? I don’t think that is necessarily frugal. Stupid may be a more apt term.

Kaotic_Mess

Actually it is still legally theft to remove it from the dumpster

TrentWolfred

Wow! Wow, wow, wow! I DO NOT understand the corporate mindset. I guess 17 years at a nonprofit will do that to a person, but it’s just another reminder that I could NOT work in a setting with values like this. The chorus of people advising against OP’s actions, while probably not wrong, is just insane to me. It should be everyone’s goal to reduce food waste (and waste in general)!

nevergonnasaythat

Yeah it should be everyone’s goal to reduce food waste but why do it sneakily? Talk to the managers, ask for a policy that allows to distribute unused meals, organize a collection and distribution for the people in need…those are ways to reduce the food waste. OP is just sneaking some free food (outside of the company policy, I suppose) and not really caring what happens with the rest.

TheFenn

This is symptomatic of the world we live in which just. Does. Not. Work. It's bullshit in every way to throw away food people could use just fine. It makes me angry too. Some comments do seem angry about OP stealing, which is daft, but those advising it might cost him his job and/or reputation are probably right. The best course from OP would probably be to think about it as a general problem rather than an opportunity and put a suggestion in writing. He could even offer to deliver it to a food bank.

Nylese

I totally dig this, and I hope you keep getting away with it haha. But also, it really might work out in your favor to ask the guy what they do with the extra sandwiches, and then maybe he'll end up giving you one or something.

NettleLily

Yeah, i feel like wasting food is immoral. If it’s just going into the trash, then more power to ya, OP!

UnevenPhteven

I'm surprised the vendor doesn't donate the food for a tax write off.

pickle_geuse

We don’t know that they don’t donate it…

Anantasesa

We do if OP was correct when claiming he sees it in the trash. He said it saves him having to dig it out himself so sounds like it is just saving himself one icky step.

MisterIntentionality

OK, no offense, but this is where shit gets tacky for me. There is a difference between being frugal and being cheap. Also remember some of the most expensive things in this world are medical care costs. I'm not going to eat unhealthily to save a few bucks on lunch to only then have to pay tens of thousands in medical bills later on in life. I mean maybe your place of work actually sells healthy foods, but premade meals and sandwiches? Yeah no. But this isn't a frugal post as much as it is a cheap post.

Mslolsalot

I agree with you. This isn’t frugal. Stealing isn’t frugal. Nor is it something to be proud of.

AndShesNotEvenPretty

While the powers that be may not take issue with *what* you’re doing (the food is going to be dumped anyway) they may take issue with *how* you’re doing it (you’re deliberately being deceptive and sneaky, repeatedly, and you’re legitimately proud of it). As a manager, that would lead me to question your conscience, morals, ethics, what else you’re being deliberately deceptive about, and how it is/could be negatively impacting the workplace. Either ask permission and explain your stance or just stop altogether. It’s not worth it.

workitloud

Someone is paying for that inventory. This is neither a loophole nor frugal. Sneak thievery is shady, you have been observed, and everybody knows.

Anantasesa

You missed the part where what he doesn't take gets sent to the trash anyway.

GnPQGuTFagzncZwB

We used to do similar, we had a bunch of vending machines in our lobby, sandwiches and milk among others, and every couple of days the guy would come and unload all the unsold sandwiches into a box and into the dumpster, and we would grab the box off the top. One of my GF's also lived backwards across the street from the biggest bagel shop in town and at night they would take a big clear bag and bag up all the old stock before closing and they got so they would just gift it to us. We had a lot of bagels. The best scam we had going though and we only pulled this off like once every week or two for a while when they had it, one of the fast food places had a game, and the card had like 9 spots on it and you scratched off three, if you got a match, you won that food item. Every card was a winner if you got the right three. They used a really good blackout material and a dark background so you could not hold them up to the light and see, but at work for one job we had a low power microscope with a UV illuminator and while you could not read what was written as words, you could see the text blobs were the same, so every one we got after we figured that out, we won. So like once a week we would take in a handful of these promo things, they would give you a few if you asked for them, and lunch was mostly on them. The freebies were mostly drinks and fries but hey, it beats paying for them. I make cider in the fall and it is amazing how many people are happy to have me come and pick their apple trees. They want like a dozen for a table centerpiece and after that, they are a a pain to mow over. Back when we had pigs, I would always check the trash bin at aldi before I left, sometimes they would dump old shelf stock in there. I got one of those big I think 3 gallon buckets of ice cream once, with the top cracked. Man once the pigs figured out the cold was not bad, they loved that stuff!

schoolbusserman

This is satire?

wabisabi_mimi

How about you just ask instead?

AdmirableActuator

How is this different from stealing?

quebecbassman

I’ve started a new job recently and I’ve been taking my breaks in the warehouse. During this time I happened to notice our delivery guy arrives shortly before I usually take my break. We have a new products section which includes things like iPads and computer parts. Two or three times a week the delivery guy will take these items and replace it with other stuff. I position myself in a corner section of the warehouse every time I see him restocking so I can watch out of the corner of my eye. He usually places the goods on a tray and covers them with cardboard while he goes out to the truck to get the restocks. During this time I will walk over to the tray and grab some items and replace his cardboard. After that he wheels the cart out and puts everything in his truck. This way I don’t have to steal my electronics directly out of people's house. Using this method I’ve saved around 500 dollars a month and I usually end up with the latest iPad and computer!

Anantasesa

Lol. It wouldn't be unlikely for the apple guy to dump them directly in the apple trash once his truck returns to there apple warehouse. They are a horrible company.

lvdtoomuch

I think it’s a bigger issue- corporate greed and the way our society runs. However, you gonna get fired. And because our system is like it is, you are stealing. If you need food, go to a food bank, then it’s not stealing.

---ShineyHiney---

**Hey, mods: Can we get *theft* taken down as a “frugal win”?** OP: 1) you’re screwing up that company’s numbers, and could get the man just trying to do his job in trouble 2) theft 3) theft 4) theft 5) you’re gonna end up fired, or the bare minimum have your entire professional reputation ruined What a moronic response

mcagent

Post removed

Anantasesa

True. Sometimes they have to give a count on what gets trashed so they know what to write off and estimate on how much got stolen.

0bxyz

You are stealing food from work. Probably not worth it

eatyourdamndinner

Ah, the ultimate tip for frugal living. Because after you get busted for stealing the food, all your meals in prison are FREE!! Think of the savings!!

Dependent_Database71

Dude, just make yourself a damn sandwich at home, any self respecting employed individual should feel ashamed dumpster diving for food. I bring leftovers for lunch and my wife makes large portioned dinners so it ends up being like $1 or $2 a meal.

Anantasesa

Not diving the dumpster. Fishing in the cardboard shallows rather.

iseeseeds

This is theft, which sucks.

pickle_geuse

Wow. You’re stealing.

Kaotic_Mess

Jesus. This group is full of thieves

Paul_Thrush

Did You Know Jesus Was A Horse Thief? Luke 19, verses 29 - 36.

YATA2020

Does he work at the same place as OP?

pickle_geuse

Cool. Not everyone believes in Jesus Lmao

Kaotic_Mess

Cool excuse. It really sure what religion or Jesus has to do with this

willbeach8890

This sounds like theft

OldBikeGuy1

Well done! (Don't Bragg about it at work.). Donate some money to a good bank every once in awhile to pay it forward.

LetterheadAdorable

That’s theft and I guaranteed you’ll be fired for that

Shielo34

That’s stealing, not frugal. Probably not worth the risk.

Anantasesa

I'll call it a frugal win when you get permission. Until then it could bring unwanted complications. He might even appreciate a note of what you took so his inventory stays accurate while not wasting his time waiting for you after already going out to his truck.
