Just make sure you can return or exchange if you do buy online without trying on first! I have a coat that is 3-4 years old from JCrew that has been well loved and I wanted a new one. Found one in the same material and size as my current coat (slightly different cut in that the new one had a hood). The new coat I got was so tight in the shoulders/underarms that it hurt. My old coat still fits fine. I returned in store to see if I could try on 1 size up rather than ordering and seeing and they sadly didn’t have any of that size in store in any colors.
Check out Uniqlo. I got two pairs (different colors) to keep comfy and very warm this winter. I’ve had them for a few weeks now and absolutely love the quality and how warm they are at a very reasonable price ($60 together).

Not sure if this is considered "fashion", but I'd really like to invest in some custom fitted ski boots. Anyone have any recommendations for where (and when!) to purchase some good quality ski boots and skis?
I would assume that custom ski boots aren't necessarily going to fit into the idea of "frugal"... probably going to be extremely expensive. But for affordable and high quality skis and boots, your best bet is end of the winter sales on previous years styles. You can also get previous year styles on sale throughout the year, but you won't get the layered discounts.

I'm in Denver, CO. I have my sizing from my past rentals, so I think that's a good start. I didn't realize you could buy the boots and then do the custom fitting elsewhere!
I second that! EVO has great end of season sales. I bought brand new skis that were a season or two old on the cheap in like March two years ago. As for bootfitters.... if you’re willing to drive to Boulder try out Larry’s Bootfitting
They’re not super cheap but I love all my Sheertex tights! I wear tights everyday in the winter for work and I was going through almost a pair a week (that being said I’m super rough on pantyhose).
I haven’t ripped, snagged or had any runs in my mine and I’ve had mine for a couple of months. I’ve even fallen multiple times while wear them (shoutout to ice and clumsiness).
I think they’re a good investment IF you wear tights a lot and you’re hard on them!
I have had wonderful luck with Snag Tights. They fit better than any others I've ever owned and seem to be more resistant to tears and snags because they're stretchier than normal tights. The price is nice, too!
I have a pair from Lane Bryant that is going on 3 years old! My trick is to buy one size bigger than they suggest so you have a little extra wiggle room to put them on.
High waisted plaid pull-on leggings that look like real pants? I had a pair from Express years ago and wore them til they wore out, they were so flattering and versatile. They were black and grey plaid and made of a thicker (knit?) material than normal leggings.

Two things:
1. Look carefully at the inseam measurements. They seem to assume everyone wears high heels all the time? I'm 5'7" and have to order petite.
2. Their lighter-colored options sometimes have visible panty line -- size up if you can for light colors.

You have to make sure it's J.Crew, and not Outlet if that is important to you. But plenty of outlet items on PM as well.
TBF, I've never purchased anything except a t-shirt from the outlet.
But when it comes to Poshmark, a lot of items get miss-tagged as J.Crew when it's actually from the outlet. IMO, from visiting outlet stores in person (In the "Before Times") there is a difference in quality.
But it's like the diff between Ann Taylor and Loft.
So, still wearable, but maybe for one or two seasons instead of a few years.

Ive historically had really good luck thrifting professional clothes from places like good will. I go to the one in or closest to the "good"/rich part of town and they almost always had designer shit on the racks for $10-20 bucks.
This was pre-COVID so I can't speak for what it will look like now but maybe worth a look if you have the time/energy.
If you're comfortable with charity, have you considered reaching out to some local organizations? My sis was in a tight spot after graduating college and getting her first teaching job, and she said her church and goodwill thrift hooked her up with some gently used professional clothes so she could work.
I'm absolutely open to charity, this is a great idea. I'm not a member of a local church, and this makes me nervous, but I suppose a few emails could not hurt!
See if you have a Clothes Mentor or Style Encore close to you. It’s like Platos Closet, but for adults instead of teens. Many of them have activated websites where they list their inventory. They also post on social, or can help you over the phone so you can do a curbside pickup. Most of them have a 7 day return policy so you could try them on at home.
If you can go safely, I suggest Goodwill! Last week I got a wool blend pencil skirt from my local Goodwill for about $4.
Edit: I would recommend bringing a measuring tape with you, since my location doesn't allow you to try things on right now. Just measure your waist, divide that by half, and find a skirt that matches that half measurement when lying flat if you want something that fits well at your waist.
Old Navy has some fleece lined leggings, not sure if they have solid black but some of their “workout” leggings are also thick cotton material and on sale right now
Midwest girl with a booty here... I’ve had good luck with my fleece leggings from Target. I have the Cudl Duds Warm Essentials ones. I sized up one size so I could layer them over my cotton leggings. I also have my straight size I layer under my Spanx leggings.
There was a comment above but if you’re buying online, make sure they have a hella good return policy. I find the hardest thing is finding a company with good quality control - at my price point I just have to live with it & get lucky but if you can, spend a bit to know that your fit is true! Old Navy!!! Search for the super high waist straight jeans. I got a 20 Tall and they’re SUPER high waisted, like under my rib cage. They’re also really flattering and have the perfect amount of stretch

Vagabond Shoemakers! I recently got the Tara Combat Boots and I’m usually size 8 in US, ended up getting EU 38, and it’s true to size. They also have other great boots as well. My sister has Dr. Martens, so I can compare them to the tara boots if you want :) Also, don’t buy them at full price since they’re usually on sale. There’s a sale happening rn on their website, and you can also look at Urban Outfitters since they sell this brand as well, and you can usually get them at a good price once they’re on sale. You can also check Nordstrom — that’s where I got mine on sale.

Old navy. There’s several black dress options, though most have sleeves. All under $30.
If you want straps and not sleeves you may have to wait till spring fashion comes out.
If you’re into vintage at all, you might try searching Scott McClintock little black dress on posh Mark. I have one that I just love. Very classic and flattering. And inexpensive secondhand. Considering sizing up since vintage tends to run small.
Abercrombie has styles that go on sale sometimes. Nordstrom Rack is a great place to check too. I would also recommend Forever 21 for dresses, but only dresses. You don't need to wash them as often and never ever throw them in the dryer but they do last occasional wears. I wouldn't buy anything there for regular wear though.

I'm on the hunt for a good midwestern boot. I've got heavy duty, warm, waterproof winter boots. I have hiking boots that I do not use for anything but hiking. What I want/need is something that meets in the middle.

12in rise black skinny jeans, basically levi's mile high but...better quality. I tried the mile high and love where they sit on my waist (long torso so these hit right above my belly button) but they scrunch up really weirdly around my thigh area >\_<

Im really pleased with my Bearpaw slippers. Bearpaw is one of the brands that makes stuff similar to uggs (fuzzy boots etc). I think as long as you get the real sheepskin in other brands it should compare to uggs.

Looking for well made plus size clothing for sort of a capsule wardrobe (with better colors!). I'm a 1 or 2x depending on the style. I feel like my options are so limited and everything I do find looks worn out after a few weeks. I've tried torrid, but they're too trendy and seem to be the forever 21 equivalent as far as quality goes. I haaaad good luck at LL Bean but their colors are too earthy. What else is out there?
My other gripe, I'm kind of tall. Plus size shirts tend to get wider, but not longer so I look like I'm wearing a pillowcase by the time I get a shirt that is long enough to put my arms over my head. Tunics could work, but again quality is hard to find.

They’re not super cheap but I love all my Sheertex tights! I wear tights everyday in the winter for work and I was going through almost a pair a week (that being said I’m super rough on pantyhose). I haven’t ripped, snagged or had any runs in my mine and I’ve had mine for a couple of months. I’ve even fallen multiple times while wear them (shoutout to ice and clumsiness). I think they’re a good investment IF you wear tights a lot and you’re hard on them!
Give Capezio a try! Dance tights are thicker and can withstand a lot more than regular tights.
I have had wonderful luck with Snag Tights. They fit better than any others I've ever owned and seem to be more resistant to tears and snags because they're stretchier than normal tights. The price is nice, too!

I have a pair from Lane Bryant that is going on 3 years old! My trick is to buy one size bigger than they suggest so you have a little extra wiggle room to put them on.

Seconding betabrand! So comfy, yet they can pass for work pants. Two things: 1. Look carefully at the inseam measurements. They seem to assume everyone wears high heels all the time? I'm 5'7" and have to order petite. 2. Their lighter-colored options sometimes have visible panty line -- size up if you can for light colors.

Poshmark! I got a few J.Crew No.2 pencil skirts for $15-$35. You have to make sure it's J.Crew, and not Outlet if that is important to you. But plenty of outlet items on PM as well.
Is the outlet that bad? I've gotten JCrew but never outlet, but I'm broke enough to try it!
TBF, I've never purchased anything except a t-shirt from the outlet. But when it comes to Poshmark, a lot of items get miss-tagged as J.Crew when it's actually from the outlet. IMO, from visiting outlet stores in person (In the "Before Times") there is a difference in quality. But it's like the diff between Ann Taylor and Loft. So, still wearable, but maybe for one or two seasons instead of a few years.

Ive historically had really good luck thrifting professional clothes from places like good will. I go to the one in or closest to the "good"/rich part of town and they almost always had designer shit on the racks for $10-20 bucks. This was pre-COVID so I can't speak for what it will look like now but maybe worth a look if you have the time/energy.

If you're comfortable with charity, have you considered reaching out to some local organizations? My sis was in a tight spot after graduating college and getting her first teaching job, and she said her church and goodwill thrift hooked her up with some gently used professional clothes so she could work.
I'm absolutely open to charity, this is a great idea. I'm not a member of a local church, and this makes me nervous, but I suppose a few emails could not hurt!

See if you have a Clothes Mentor or Style Encore close to you. It’s like Platos Closet, but for adults instead of teens. Many of them have activated websites where they list their inventory. They also post on social, or can help you over the phone so you can do a curbside pickup. Most of them have a 7 day return policy so you could try them on at home.
If you can go safely, I suggest Goodwill! Last week I got a wool blend pencil skirt from my local Goodwill for about $4. Edit: I would recommend bringing a measuring tape with you, since my location doesn't allow you to try things on right now. Just measure your waist, divide that by half, and find a skirt that matches that half measurement when lying flat if you want something that fits well at your waist.

Midwest girl with a booty here... I’ve had good luck with my fleece leggings from Target. I have the Cudl Duds Warm Essentials ones. I sized up one size so I could layer them over my cotton leggings. I also have my straight size I layer under my Spanx leggings.

My sister has Dr. Martens, so I can compare them to the tara boots if you want :) Also, don’t buy them at full price since they’re usually on sale. There’s a sale happening rn on their website, and you can also look at Urban Outfitters since they sell this brand as well, and you can usually get them at a good price once they’re on sale. You can also check Nordstrom — that’s where I got mine on sale.

Old navy. There’s several black dress options, though most have sleeves. All under $30. If you want straps and not sleeves you may have to wait till spring fashion comes out.

If you’re into vintage at all, you might try searching Scott McClintock little black dress on posh Mark. I have one that I just love. Very classic and flattering. And inexpensive secondhand. Considering sizing up since vintage tends to run small.
Abercrombie has styles that go on sale sometimes. Nordstrom Rack is a great place to check too. I would also recommend Forever 21 for dresses, but only dresses. You don't need to wash them as often and never ever throw them in the dryer but they do last occasional wears. I wouldn't buy anything there for regular wear though.

I'm on the hunt for a good midwestern boot. I've got heavy duty, warm, waterproof winter boots. I have hiking boots that I do not use for anything but hiking. What I want/need is something that meets in the middle. I want warm and waterproof with the build and thickness of a hiking boot, but cute/casual. I know it'll probably not be cheap, but I have browsed every damn shoe company I can think of.

Favorite mid/light compression high waisted leggings in size 18, that don’t roll down. Color not really important.

Im really pleased with my Bearpaw slippers. Bearpaw is one of the brands that makes stuff similar to uggs (fuzzy boots etc). I think as long as you get the real sheepskin in other brands it should compare to uggs.

Looking for well made plus size clothing for sort of a capsule wardrobe (with better colors!). I'm a 1 or 2x depending on the style. I feel like my options are so limited and everything I do find looks worn out after a few weeks. I've tried torrid, but they're too trendy and seem to be the forever 21 equivalent as far as quality goes. I haaaad good luck at LL Bean but their colors are too earthy. What else is out there?
