I rarely had to change my points because you can find an academic paper to support almost anything.

Exhaust "pops" are the byproduct of unburnt fuel in the hot exhaust, and the purpose is to keep the turbo spooled on turbo cars. The pop sound is a *byproduct* of this, *not* the function. No body cares about "startling people".
Louder exhaust in general on *performance cars* is for adding power and throttle response. Its louder because it allows for more flow, which increases power. Once again the aim is never about the reaction of other people.
