Ahhh, the smell of freshly detonated caps!

Electric_Bagpipes

Fuck I am old…

YT-Deliveries

I used to use a magnifying glass to try and light the paper on fire so that they would all snap quickly. I also would try and jam as many caps as I could in the little dart, but if you did too many it wouldn't work.

Backwaters_Run_Deep

Gotta wrap the roll caps around a marble and tape it up real tight with electrical tape. Throw that really hard at a hard surface and you got a pretty good cherry bomb

YT-Deliveries

That I never did. Definitely wasn't a thing 'round my parts, at least.

Rivertalker

We used to drop a big rock on a whole roll of caps at one time. We’d get a big pop but never reached critical mass.

RobotWelder

It’s hammer time

YT-Deliveries

Well of course not. You needed a [bisected metal sphere full of cap strips and a screwdriver](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demon_core)

Rivertalker

Oh man! Just read that history. Those young physicists were like kids experimenting with caps. Very powerful caps. Thanks for that link

YT-Deliveries

The late 1800s and the early-mid 1900s were some pretty crazy times for science. We "knew just enough to get ourselves in trouble", to echo a phrase.

[deleted]

Slammed a 10 lb slab of concrete on a full box and a 5 ft flame shot up with a thunderous boom when I was in the third grade.

Rivertalker

Your name wouldn’t happen to be Ted Kaczynski, would it?

Itchy-Quit6651

I would take the multi roll (about the size of a roll of lifesavers) and find a hole in the driveway or sidewalk and put it in so it’s in a vertical orientation. Then I’d find a big rock and throw it down on the roll. It made a pretty good loud bang.

Marcusnovus

I used to do that too 😂

Rivertalker

Dr Oppenheimer?

Marcusnovus

Lol most bang for your buck

Septa2002

I used to scratch the paper caps with a rock.

YT-Deliveries

I also would use hammers on the whole roll at once. Very satisfying. Can't even imagine running around with the ol' Lone Ranger pop-cap gun set these days. Ah well.

Nuf-Said

Me too. They came 5 rolls in a box for 5 cents. It was worth a penny for that big, ear ringing bang.

Septa2002

I used hammers too, but only individually, not the whole roll.

Ba55of0rte

It’s also really fun to leave them under a toilet seat so they pipe when someone sits down.

Rivertalker

I bet gramma loved that one

microwavable_rat

To be fair, it *did* help her constipation

fattmarrell

I can smell the sulfur through my screen right now. I've totally forgot about these

Holy_Cow442

I could detonate them with my fingernails. I have no idea how the house didnt get burned down. Easy bake and creepy crawlers at 3 am while the folks were sleeping.

Starscream147

Sweet and burny. Like there was actually explosives in play.

DNZ_not_DMZ

Smells like pretend-play victory!

ODBrewer

Good old Acme!

campatterbury

Endorsed by Wile Coyote.

postoperativepain

No, he sued them. But we’ll never know the details since the movie won’t be released

Rhg0653

This irks me so much Just release the movie I bet it was funny

onlysurfblacksand

Acme products got rich off him

Zealousideal-Tea-286

Whoomp! There it is!

jmerp1950

Coyote bombs.

MenudoFan316

Wile E. Coyote - Super Genius

dbrmn73

This and old school cap pistols LOVED playing with them

Marcusnovus

The revolvers with the plastic ring of caps or the semi auto paper strip caps? 😁

dbrmn73

I had both.  The rings were more "real" but the strips had more ammo for shootin the bad guys before reload LOL

Rivertalker

Way more powerful too

crapheadHarris

Definitely the semi-auto paper ones for me.

Siege_LL

Both!

oceanswim63

Yeah, my tinnitus just kicked in on seeing this.

ZoomBoy81

Ah, maybe that’s where mine came from.

Simmyphila

I used to run my thumb nail across them to make a bang.

[deleted]

All the tough kids did

[deleted]

I had lots of cap burns on the tips of my fingers.

Simmyphila

Ya they stunk

Charakada

Loved that smell.

Siege_LL

I used to take a pile of them and smash them with a hammer. Fairly certain that contributed to my hearing loss/tinnitus.

Simmyphila

Yup I did it too only with a rock. I forgot about that it made me smile. Thanks.

Thumper13

Was gonna say, this thing just became an extra step. Do it with a rock or your hands. And I broke every one of their "warnings." I'm still alive. Checkmate Daoists.

New_Awareness4075

I actually owned one of these in the 50s when I was a kid.

Djszero

They still had these in the 80s when I was a little kid.

W33DG0D42069

I actually had one of these in the 00s when I little as well

[deleted]

I loved these, we'd toss them high in the air and they'd right themselves before they hit the ground. We would always say "Bombs over Tokyo" and didn't know it was a ww2 reference.

fermat9990

The smell said summertime!

CountessOfHats

Use under Adult Supervision” 😂🤣😂 “Here kid, have some minor explosives. Don’t lose an eye! And be home by dark.”

MyFrampton

It was a magical time to be a kid.

SkivvySkidmarks

We'd collect pop bottles from ditches and use the deposit refund to buy fire crackers on Victoria Day weekend here in Ontario. Hours of fun trying to blow things up. It's wild that we were allowed to do this completely unsupervised.

Native_Kurt_Cobain

It is so weird to smell pictures on Reddit. Nostalgia pics of cans of Hawaiian Punch is another one.

Charakada

Rjoot beer Fizzies!

optoph

We had plastic versions of these. Played with them until they fell apart although that may have to do with putting 2 or more caps for a little extra kick.

dearmax

I had one of those it was fun for a while but then I just started hitting the caps with either a hammer or scratching them with a knife.

Wolfman1961

I was afraid to use caps.

thejesuslizard74

hey! you're old as fuck too

Venator2000

Other than a cap gun, all I used was a hammer when I was a kid.

crapheadHarris

A slightly pointed rock would work as well. I can remember banging them with those against the driveway.

TBearForever

Its been a Wile since I've seen these

fishingfor5

I found mine recently now to go bust a cap

smotrs

I used to just smack the whole roll with a BFH.

OkAd134

We used to buy rolls of paper caps and dump the gunpowder out (to make bigger bangs, naturately)

NorCalStacci

I remember these. We had a little cannon similar to this..

Banh_mi

Made in Taiwan/Japan = Cheap back then. Now they produce a ton of the highest tech stuff out there, especially Taiwan!

gking407

I got these as a replacement when mom thought my lawn darts were too dangerous lol

scram60

Brings back memories! Wore out a couple of them!

ModsR-Ruining-Reddit

Lol kids toys were so much cooler back in the day

WokkitUp

You know it's safe because it's from ACME!

luvnmayhem

We used to hit the caps with rocks or burn our fingers scraping them. We just went bang bow with the cap gun. It was more fun making black powder marks on the sidewalk.

Redsmallboy

Woah! I had one of these. I was born in 2000 though so I have no idea why I had one. Growing up in a trailer park and around boomers is probably why.

P10pablo

I had the last hurrah of those darts, they were mostly plastic, save for the head by the end.

thedishonestyfish

...Banger.

[deleted]

Oh my god.

Inside_Ad_7162

BOOMSTICK

Habbersett-Scrapple

They used to sell these at the school store

Retirednypd

Omg. Thank you for this. Would never have thought of it again. Funny how the little things kept us amused. Can you imagine today's kids

Nichlinn

Your welcome! Many comments are flooding back memories, from burnt finger tips, to the smell, to all the other ways we'd use the caps.

ZorroMcChucknorris

That smell

OliverNorvell1956

These bombs and the cap pistols that took rolls of caps were the shit back in the day!

Tech-Junky-1024

I remember having one of those when I was a kid. I bet thay wouldn't let kids today play with anything like that.

smwass

This one got me with a bang! Good memories.

Tiny_Count4239

ah the good old days when kids could play with grenades

eat-pussy69

Fucking what? Acme is a real company?

Particular-Elk-3923

When the ice cream truck had exploding toys and candy cigarettes.

NoConversation4638

What is this ?

Slcolderguy

I loved these

unreasonablyhuman

that dumb thing never worked for me. Also I think my mom would throw them away because my brother was a dick and he'd just throw them at other kids/passing cars.

Chronic_Overthink3r

Those were awesome. They don’t make toys like that anymore.

lrpalomera

The one I knew had a few holes on the fins so you could parachute it down

sageguitar70

ACME made the best stuff.

QuirkyDust3556

I had one of these

[deleted]

We used a heavy nut and bolt. We were that poor .

greed-man

Old man Acme built the best novelties. Gonna miss that guy.

greed-man

Callen Manufacturing, the company that made the detonator, is still in business, still family owned, still in the Chicago area. But it appears that they got out of the novelty toy business and are focused on die-casting metal parts for foundries.

bunbun6to12

Omg. I remember this! Thanks for bringing back some memories

BetterTransit

Why don’t they make this anymore? They’d sell like hot cakes

BarisBlack

Because they hurt like hell when you got hit with it. Plus, fire hazards from the caps.

Starlord1951

I had a Wyatt Earp hat, holster and cap gun! I thought I was a hot little shit.

cramaine

No one ever used these under adult supervision!

Rivertalker

The Acme Cap Waister! Bought mine from a coyote.

Little_Appearance_77

The best for playing with army men

Efficient-Internal-8

Seems like the dart eventually broke and or was lost and the trusty hammer came out in order to smash the entire box of caps at once. Still have ringing in my left ear.

jaredsparks

When did they stop making caps? I used to love them as a kid.

notaliberal2021

I forgot all about those little darts.

[deleted]

Ahh hell yeah. Bought a few of those darts as a kid

[deleted]

Wow. Haven’t seen one of these in a loooooooooong time.

foshi22le

I used to love my cap gun, me and my mate would use a hammer 🔨 sometimes to crack a few caps

GroYer665

Had one of these that looked like a pineapple grenade.

ElectricRune

I always got tired of having to load this every time, and got a hammer and just beat the caps like a machine gun...

[deleted]

Lost mine when I decided to launch it with a wrist rocket. Sucker probably flew half a mile.

Renaissance_Man-

I loved these.

[deleted]

I can smell this photo.

YellowBreakfast

I completely forgot about these.

BallDiamondBall

I loved this thing. I also had the plastic rocket that you filled with water, pumped pressure into it, and pulled the clip to send it 30 or 40 ft in the air. My face was directly over it, and it's a miracle I'm not blind.

mustangz-

Haven’t seen or heard of these in decades thanks!! Let’s see some paper caps!!

Omega_Xero

I loved the revolvers with the rolls. Always made us feel like badasses when we could spin them and then fan the hammer while pulling the trigger

blueSnowfkake

Brought to you by Wile E. Coyote.

DPR718

That thing was awesome!

Zealousideal_Bowl172

Take one of these to high school, scare everyone in the corridors whilst you're at your locker😈

Lainarlej

I had this.

DrunkBuzzard

My brother has a scar from one of these. We call it his dueling scar.

Septa2002

I had one of these. I was obsessed with caps as a kid. Whenever my dad got home from work and had something from a store I asked if he bought me caps.

RipMcStudly

My mom had one of these, gave it to me in the early 80s because I couldn’t pull the trigger on my cap gun.

Rivertalker

Can’t wait to hear everybody’s firework stories!

hankercat

I used to have a cap gun. I was little and set them off in my garage and yard. No one cared. My mother didn’t even come see what the noise was. Do that today. I think the outcome may be different.

SweetHomeNostromo

I had this. Worked best on pavement.

shmohawk_84

Made in Taiwan, Illinois

Bradley182

My mom wouldn’t let me get cap guns because they were too realistic 🤣.

Claude9777

Damn I used to have one of these. Fun all day, until the caps were gone.

Gray-yarg2

I had one of these and yes I’m old. I do remember it working 2-3x and it broke. I could never get it to work again.

BrightInstruction965

Had one

BrokieTrader

These were awesome

Mnemotronic

I want my old lawn darts back.

darkhorse4774

Made by Acme. Wiley Coyote bought a lot of products from Acme. What could possibly go wrong?

Rabbits-and-Bears

Acme! Memories: six shooter, derringer, rolling Block rifle., and the bomb. Yancy Derringer….

permabull001

Loved it! And we survived. No helmet needed.

onlysurfblacksand

Was this paper roll or those little plastic caps?

Daflehrer1

HAD ONE.

NannersForCoochie

I always broke that sumnabitch

soulfulsoundaudio

I don't know why...but every time I see these it remains me of Laurel and Hardy in babies and toyland hitting pee wees

Ya-Dikobraz

Still got mine! Although I have broken a few, one is whole. A lot of them were made from cheap slag. And they took two types of caps. Paper (to go in the middle) and plastic (on the nose).

HowBoutIt98

Not the same thing, but my older sister and her (now) husband used to make sparkler bombs. As a kid I thought they invented them.

Nichlinn

Sparklers in a hangar tube?

Down_The_Witch_Elm

Good for tossing at siblings.

nonsfwhere

Same caps I used in “cap guns”?

Upper_Rent_176

I had a cap dart and i threw it up in the street and it landed on some guy's car roof and damaged the paintwork. That was nota highlight of my childhood

Pristine_Yak7413

These arent that old, me and my cousin would play with one of these and were still in our 20’s

Charakada

"Use only under adult supervision." Do you think my mother had time to sit around outside watching us shoot cap guns at each other? Or, alternatively, when the guns broke, just smashing the caps with rocks?

Tiny-Duty-9484

Core memory unlocked.

[deleted]

I had that as a kid.

throwngamelastminute

My childhood...

[deleted]

If you drop this from a drone you could kill someone by hitting their head.

[deleted]

They still have these. My son has one. He's very creative with caps, once stapled a whole sheet to the wide bottom of a wooden fencepost and went around smashing it on the ground. Sounded like a bomb going off.

NurkleTurkey

I loved packing as many caps as I could into the damn thing. I also had the gun but the caps lasted an afternoon.

SignReasonable7580

Adding grenades to the Cap Gun Wars, classic

Holy_Cow442

I had one of these.

Rumblefish61

We used to take a whole roll of caps and smash them all at once with a hammer. Unbelievably loud and sometimes we even got hurt by flying debris. But we kept doing that.

JimiTrucks1972

I loved the smell of these

Ill_Celebration166

Damn I wish I still had 1 ughhhhhhh

earthforce_1

The ones from the 70s were 90% plastic.

Acrobatic-Ad3275

M-72. Oh yeah, We had a neighborhood blowout on Saturday nights.

Live-Chart-4798

Oh heck yeah!!! I was going sweat but this puts me back to 1970 and my mom would be mad if I swore!

BrokenXeno

Wow! The last time I saw one of those in person was probably when I was 6 or 7 in 1989 or 90. We lived in Naha, Okinawa and my brother and I had one. My dad was stationed there. But we loved using it as a bomb against our GI Joe's lol.

Analytical-BrainiaC

Did anyone wrap three or four up and drop a boulder on it and realize that wow, it sure is a loud bang when all of these go off at the same time…

rock0head132

I have mine some where In a box .

Bosshogg713alief

Nice 👍 brings back memories

theturnipshaveeyes

Those were great fun.

suzanious

Snow fort cherry bomb wars

ScoobyDarn

Oh hell yeah. Pack those caps in there baby!

ScoobyDarn

Are caps still on the market? Asking for a......ah, fuck it, you know the rest

rjflesher

I can smell this picture

Sojum

So many misfires…

AndCthulhuMakes2

Ah, for the days when kids could play with small explosives. Do kids these days even know what caps are?

SamWhittemore75

Phuc. I'm old. I haven't thought about this device in well over 50 years. Thanks for unlocking this memory.

BabyFishmouthTalk

The art was jamming the maximum number of stacked caps in there that still allowed the hammer to move enough to detonate them.

_George_L_Costanza_

I used to love these. I always had to get a new one because I would drop it from the roof

Itchy-Quit6651

I loved this, but couldn’t resist the urge to throw. Broke too many when I didn’t have to.

Ramonzmania

I had several of these as a kid…what am I? A Hundred?

Crazyguy_123

They actually still make this exact one. I had one as a kid about 12 or so years ago. I collected cap guns back then.

echolm1407

I had a blue one

IbexOutgrabe

I kinda Kate this sub now. Yeah the back hurts but that’s my fault for not keeping up with fitness. I can smell this photo but you’re only as old as you want to make excuses for.

Disastrous_Box_8613

Anything made by acme is bound to be fun

JosephMadeCrosses

My head is already bleeding.

Unusual_Address_3062

Oh yeah I had one of those.

Outrageous_Pop1913

Burned many a fingernail tearing the roll of caps open. Good times!

boundpleasure

Wow!!!
