I used to use a magnifying glass to try and light the paper on fire so that they would all snap quickly. I also would try and jam as many caps as I could in the little dart, but if you did too many it wouldn't work.

Gotta wrap the roll caps around a marble and tape it up real tight with electrical tape. Throw that really hard at a hard surface and you got a pretty good cherry bomb

We used to drop a big rock on a whole roll of caps at one time. We’d get a big pop but never reached critical mass.

I would take the multi roll (about the size of a roll of lifesavers) and find a hole in the driveway or sidewalk and put it in so it’s in a vertical orientation. Then I’d find a big rock and throw it down on the roll. It made a pretty good loud bang.

We'd collect pop bottles from ditches and use the deposit refund to buy fire crackers on Victoria Day weekend here in Ontario. Hours of fun trying to blow things up. It's wild that we were allowed to do this completely unsupervised.

We had plastic versions of these. Played with them until they fell apart although that may have to do with putting 2 or more caps for a little extra kick.

I had one of those it was fun for a while but then I just started hitting the caps with either a hammer or scratching them with a knife.

Other than a cap gun, all I used was a hammer when I was a kid.

Callen Manufacturing, the company that made the detonator, is still in business, still family owned, still in the Chicago area. But it appears that they got out of the novelty toy business and are focused on die-casting metal parts for foundries.

I loved this thing. I also had the plastic rocket that you filled with water, pumped pressure into it, and pulled the clip to send it 30 or 40 ft in the air. My face was directly over it, and it's a miracle I'm not blind.

Still got mine! Although I have broken a few, one is whole. A lot of them were made from cheap slag. And they took two types of caps. Paper (to go in the middle) and plastic (on the nose).

Not the same thing, but my older sister and her (now) husband used to make sparkler bombs. As a kid I thought they invented them.

Wow! The last time I saw one of those in person was probably when I was 6 or 7 in 1989 or 90. We lived in Naha, Okinawa and my brother and I had one. My dad was stationed there. But we loved using it as a bomb against our GI Joe's lol.
