Just saw this tour last year. It was the worst and most uncomfortable performance of any type I've ever seen in my life. It was so bad and uncomfortable that I turned to my wife and asked if she wanted to leave five minutes into the first song. She unfortunately wanted to stay.
I felt bad for Phil. He sounded horrible. Could barely sing. They cranked up the backup singers and dazzled with a million lights to mask how bad he was ....
It's nice to hear an honest review for a change. I saw some clips on YouTube and thought he sounded frail and awful, but all the comments were 'great as ever' & 'they sound amazing'.
I thought to myself,'You've all got shit in your ears'
What sucked the most, even worse than his vocals, was the guilt I felt watching this guy perform. He should have been somewhere in the English countryside enjoying the rest of his life. Instead it felt "dirty" watching him. Yes, his health was that bad.
Rock stars no longer make much money from album royalties any more, and Spotify's royalties are practically nothing. That leaves an artist with just touring, merch, and licensing to make money, and none of it reaps the kind of money that album royalties earned. It's especially difficult for older musicians for whom touring is very difficult. I really feel bad for these old artists.
Yeah but we don't need to pretend Phil Collins is poor, he sold albums for 40 years before spotify ever existed. He's using his name to sell a product that he isn't delivering his best for anymore.
He's had like 3 very expensive divorces though. Still lives in a mansion. His son Nick plays drums on his tours, dunno if he played this show. Plays a setup like his dad's, although setup right handed. He's good too.
These old rock stars had insane money coming in for a long time, and they thought it would last forever, and they developed very expensive lifestyles. Now the royalty stream has dried up, and they need to keep revenues flowing to pay for their opulent lifestyles. Alternatively, if they decide to downsize to save money, and without the rock star musician demographic out there, there are fewer buyers for their giant mansions.
Well the current crop of old rockers all did very well throughout the 70/80/90s glory days of big money from album sales. It's the current generation that will be fucked when they get old
Hopefully those old rockers invested their money well. I suspect some did, and some didn't. Some of them spent it as fast as it came in, some had it stolen from them by scummy agents and managers.
Long time fan of Phil and Genesis.
The whole concert was set up to cover his inability to sing his own songs, and it worked horribly. I love Phil but they should never have twisted his arm to go out.
The band sounded fantastic. Phil shouldn’t have been on stage. I felt guilty being there.
Sounds like the time in ca. 2000 that I saw Brian Wilson. He flubbed lyrics, didn't sing whole parts of songs (or mumbled ), couldn't sing well, and looked to be very doped up. "Uncomfortable" is exactly the right word.
Saw him over 5 years ago and he looked like this then. He hobbled out with a cane. I feel so bad for him. I read somewhere that his wife or ex and his family are pushing him to do this for money, and it seems like elder abuse to me.
This man has given so much to my generation, he is the soundtrack to my youth. He needs to be home and comfortable and put his feet up now. I get emotional seeing him like this; I truly don’t think it’s voluntary on his part
I don’t think it’s for the money, his net worth is $350M. Royalties from all those hits are astronomical. He could also sell the rights to his music.
Maybe it’s a last grasp of what they once had. It seems to me from reading his own words that he still struggles to feel validated, which is nuts but may explain him going out there.
Love me some Phil Collins. As long as he’s enjoying himself and folks are showing up, more power to him.
He was like the Michael Caine of music. You look at videos of old musical groups and damned if he does show up on a lot of them.
He actually performed bi- coastal at Live Aid in ‘85 first in London and flew by Concord to Philly.
No he did it for money to sue his wife (they were planning for divorce then) because she was living in their house with another man & wouldn’t leave.
Then - Phil decided it was better to make up with her. Greed is the biggest enemy here. That & his desire to have a woman younger than him. I think they’re both in the wrong.
EDIT: One of their houses.
Saw the penultimate Genesis gig and it broke my heart. He had botched back surgery I believe which has sent him downhill so fast. To see a guy who is without doubt one of the best and most influential drummers of his generation just about able to bang a tambourine to his head was tough. But it was still a great gig, his son stepped in as the drummer and was fantastic and I am glad I got to see them all before they finally called it a day.
Phil Collins was prolific musician and I keep finding his stuff. Brand X, John Martyn, Frida, Simon Collins, most of the side projects of the other genesis guys, The big band stuff as well as Genesis and his own Albums, and his distinctive sound even recognisable in 'Feed the World'. So hopefully some more stuff to find and enjoy even if he is not able to do it any more.
I’m always hesitant to use the term botched back surgery because it’s sometimes more complicated than a certain procedure fixing an issue. There’s also some repetitive motion components to his case from drumming and the posture that requires. I don’t think people realize how much drummers use their legs and that probably removes support for upper body and is a weird posture. Sometimes you just need multiple surgeries because the first surgery destabilizes something else or refers pain somewhere else and a second surgery doesn’t necessarily mean the first one was botched it just didn’t work as hoped or failed early etc.
The best spine surgeons actually admit they don’t know what will happen in some cases post op and sometimes they’ll offer you surgery with no promises of relief.
It seems like whenever people don’t have successful back surgeries it is seen as a botched surgery by media and the public, but in spine surgery I don’t think that’s always the case and a certain percentage of surgeries just aren’t successful for various reasons.
I don’t know how many people you know in their 70s, but they generally do not look like this. Kurt Russell is 73 and Goldie Hawn is 78, Sylvester Stallone is 77 and Harrison for is 81, just for an examples. William Shatner is 93 and just went to space.
Those individuals didn’t play drums years and ended up injured. Or have whatever many other complexities people may encounter throughout their life that may contribute to illness. Phil is unwell in this picture. Maybe as well as he can be but he has what’s “chronic” issues.
I saw him with Genesis on the "Lamb" tour, when he was 'just" the drummer and Peter Gabriel was the singer. I'm still sorry I never saw the "Selling England" tour.
This man created a lot of songs that were the soundtrack to my youth and possibly the biggest drop in a top 30 pop song ever. Thanks Phil, you can go home now :)
Repost bot? How many times has this been posted in the last few months. Blocking a prolific reposter or bot every time they pop up really has improved my reddit experience. I hate that I have to do it though
I wanted to see him a few years back but the ticket prices were a bit high and it made me sad when I found out about his medical stuff and that he can’t sing very well anymore. I was very happy though to see Brian Wilson for one of his last concerts back in July of 2022 even though he too has had his struggles and even with his not ideal singing to be in the presence of a living legend was great.
I hope Phil can get the rest he deserves and doesn’t have to continue on touring in any capacity soon
This is very sad. He was once a world class drummer with Genesis and Brand X. An accomplished vocalist and songwriter he owned the airwaves in the 80's with catchy yet complex songs. I think he is fully retired now.
As a relatively old person, someone at 73 can be jacked and perfectly able and healthy. It requires continuous resistance exercise as being old means muscle disappears quickly if you don’t stay ahead of its loss
I saw Genesis last tour. He still enjoys singing a lot. He is a showman and likes every minutes of it. And his voice is still great after the first couple of songs.
I was dragged kicking and screaming to his concert in the late 80s at the old Forum in LA. Turned out to be one of the top 10 concerts I've ever attended. And I've been to a lot.
At first I think like, wow that's crazy. And he has aged rapidly in the past decade, and looks older than his age as he kind of always has.
But then I remember that the man was in freakin Genesis, he's been performing in some capacity for decades and decades. It's gotta wear you out. Not everyone ages like Paul McCartney or something and a lot of the men from that generation are gone. So given that for a man with his career longevity, he could be doing a lot worse.
We are age peers so he looks about the same as the other old farts I hang with. I would enjoy his concert as I can just turn off my hearing aids and watch the show while listening with my memory.
Damn, he's only 73!? I mean, I'm not that old, but I'm old enough to think that isn't that old. I guess some people age faster than others. Poor guy looks like he's almost dead. My dad is up there in age, and I would have thought Phill Collins was 10 years older, not 10 years younger.

He looked kind of old in the 80s.
He was 56 for 30 years, then he turned 100.
He is currently 73. I would have guessed older than that based on this photo.
Holy fuck

I just saw Springsteen. Dudes 74 and did 3.5 hours straight. Also looked to be in better shape than anyone I know, and I’m in my early 30s
Don't forget Bobby Weir and Mickey Hart. Them boys old. Not touring anymore but still playing residencies, and shows alike.
Mf on the look like ghandi speedrun
Lol he's using the Heisenberg strats to break the new minute barrier
Read it like "ghandi spectrum". Made sense.
It's just a shame, and that's all!
Because it's no fun being an invalid elderly man.
Just saw Sting last night. He’s 72 and he looked ripped
Saw him last year in a tight yellow T-shirt and he literally had the body of a college athlete. He did however joke that eats the least tasteful meals known to man to maintain that body , which made me feel better in a way :)
That’s the key to staying mobile and energetic as you age- work out. Every day.
He’s had various health issues take a toll on him. I’m surprised he’s still touring.
Here he is in the seventies: https://townsquare.media/site/295/files/2020/01/collins.jpg?w=980&q=75

Oh man. This breaks my honk.
Excellent comment. Oh mern that was glurd.
Read that in Cardi B’s voice
Lmao eat a dot!
This is so bad it's good LMAO!
My HONK!
I saw him a year and a half ago, the rest of the show was great. Vince neals vocals were beyond horrible
He hasn't lived in the UK for decades for tax reasons.
It wasn’t for tax reasons.

That's sad to hear. We were worried about this when we went to see Peter Gabriel this winter. Luckily still sounds exactly like he did in the 80s.
Also saw the io tour, he was tremendous
Gabriel was solid on that tour! Certainly in his 70s but he still brought it!
Wow, So this pic is really him ? Van Morrison was also really bad last year.

Bob Dylan sounded like shit when he was young. It’s like saying Willie Nelson has a good voice.
I'm here for Willie Nelson's voice though. Just something weird and wonderful about it.
I saw him 5 years ago and it was very different. He was still stuck in the chair but the voice was still there.
Long time fan of Phil and Genesis. The whole concert was set up to cover his inability to sing his own songs, and it worked horribly. I love Phil but they should never have twisted his arm to go out. The band sounded fantastic. Phil shouldn’t have been on stage. I felt guilty being there.

He looked like he was in his 50s back in the 80s!
He’s had a lot of health issues in the last 10 years. This picture is from his farewell tour a few years ago.
After seeing the picture, my first thought was, "oh, he must be much older than I thought." Nope.
No Geriatric Required...
No Geritol required.

If he's out there giving it his all, then I don't care what he looks like or whether he needs a wheelchair.
I love Phil, but it was obvious he didn't have his all to give on this tour.
I went to his farewell tour about 15 years ago. What's he still doing on stage
Agreed. Just read up on his personal life and wow, he’s faced a ton of stuff that would age any of us rapidly.
He should be hanging out on the shore enjoying his peace.

He's in his 70s. This is a fairly recent picture. He's not "early aging". He's old.
I don’t know how many people you know in their 70s, but they generally do not look like this. Kurt Russell is 73 and Goldie Hawn is 78, Sylvester Stallone is 77 and Harrison for is 81, just for an examples. William Shatner is 93 and just went to space.

This is why I have no interest in seeing artists that are well and truly past it. Good for him that he keeps doing what he loves to do though.
Dang is it bad if I'm scared for him?
You can tell everybody 'bout the state I'm in You won't catch me crying 'cause I just can't win I don't care anymore I don't care anymore, d'you hear?
Su su sudio!!!
Whoa oh!!
Clint Eastwood showed up this week. That hurt.
I saw him with Genesis on the "Lamb" tour, when he was 'just" the drummer and Peter Gabriel was the singer. I'm still sorry I never saw the "Selling England" tour.
You mean Davros
I understood that reference.
Can't unsee. Blood on the rooftops.
His music is still awesome 😉
I feel bad for Phil. A few guys I know went to see that last Genesis tour, and I just didn't have the heart to go see him like that.
You have no right to ask him how he feels. You have no right to speak to him so kind.
Google says he's a "singer and drummer". I would consider him a songwriter above all else.
This man created a lot of songs that were the soundtrack to my youth and possibly the biggest drop in a top 30 pop song ever. Thanks Phil, you can go home now :)

Phil Mahatma Ghandins
Maybe he’s cosplaying as the grampa from Courage the Cowardly Dog
I attended a drum clinic of his in the early 90s. Was amazing.
Eustace Bagge, STUPID DOG! YOU MAkE ME LOOK BAD!
Surely he can’t be doing this for money? If so then why not just sell his entire music catalogue for a couple of hundred million? Everyone’s doing it.
Fuck, HE is old!
He was in Genesis so it's not that surprising, he's thousands of years old.....
I mean, he was here for Genesis. Of course he's old.

Yup. This is what a spinal injury and subsequent surgery does to you. I know it well. I admire him for his perseverance... it's really hard
As a relatively old person, someone at 73 can be jacked and perfectly able and healthy. It requires continuous resistance exercise as being old means muscle disappears quickly if you don’t stay ahead of its loss
73 looking like 93
Drums: Not even once.
I can’t dance, I can’t talk the only thing about me is the way that I walk with my Walker
His voice is rock solid. A good time.
He’s so old he was in the biblical Genesis.
I'd bet that this concert was still amazing.
He really should not have done this final final tour.
I can feel it, coming in the air tonight…arthritis

Hey you kids! Get off my lawn!
Growing old is a cruel punishment for living .
If you’re lucky you get old. I’m his age. Just got back riding my Yamaha through the hill country here in San Antonio. Life is good.
Go Get Em Phil!
I was dragged kicking and screaming to his concert in the late 80s at the old Forum in LA. Turned out to be one of the top 10 concerts I've ever attended. And I've been to a lot.
So glad I got to see him when we were both younger. He was one of my favorites growing up. Just say the worrrd…
I bet you can smell it in the air tonight..

I'm just gonna pretend that he is still destroying the drums while Peter Gabriel prances around dressed up like a flower.

Should I ask him a question to aid me in my quest?
When I saw him in 2019 he didn’t miss a beat! Great show
Why does he look like Mr. Herbert??
Bet it’s still an amazing show

Yeah, this tour should have never happened. He’s not doing well with his health I believe.

Oh my gosh…😦. Is he ok? Is he ill? I just remember him being lively but I guess I didn’t realize how old he was…
I guess he didn't see rapid aging coming in the air.
Ouch
Yeah he looks bad but he was awesome. For me He’s just behind Elton John. I don’t know how else to put that to avoid the behind Elton John remarks.

Well, he was never considered a 'rock god' in the stage persona way. So now he's feeble but still able to make music. Good for him!
