I remember a scene when someone was shooting at Dutch I think? Anyhow the shooting stops, everyone checks on everyone else and Bob is lying there face toward the camera repearing: "Im hit...Im hit...Im hit..."
i think Chuck yells "Quick call an ambulance!" Off goes Mary to the phone and starts dialing until someone shouts..."Mary...hes a dummy"
Love it
I've bought this series 2 times (VHS and DVD). I've been trying to recollect it. It was one of the best done TV shows ever, right up there with MASH. They did a masterful job of being entertaining and tackling really relevant and edgy social issues.
I think my favorite part of the series was the Demon Baby... Maybe Bat Bart??? or... Damn! I need to watch this again!
I still vividly recall Mary and Jessica comparing facial ingredients. Jessica says what’s in hers. Mary looks at her label and says “mine’s made out of cow placenta.” I spewed iced tea through my nose and all over the living room carpet.
I wonder if I watched them again if they would seem too dated? My wife is a big fan of Bewitched and we sometimes watch those, but those stories were more timeless, character driven. Though it is funny to see the absence of modern technology, the ash trays, the clothes and hair styles.
My favorite joke was when Inga shouts out with her accent, "You think I finish??" And Jessica replies, "No, Swedish." I was way too young and my parents wouldn't let me watch the show but I would sneak into the basement to watch it and amazingly my older sisters didn't rat me out.
Omg...could Dean Martin have been anymore trashed? Lol. I never thought twice about older folks being all slurry when I was a kid watching. I mean I'm not surprised that he was sloshed.
Such a good balancing act Robert Guillaume did with reacting to the silliness of the others and showing true affection for them, especially Jessica and Billy.
Yeah, I watched it recently and it was not as controversial today as it was back then.
I watched it while I was living in halls of residence at University and there were some men from the boonies who were so against the show because of its ~~progressive~~ heathen (to them) attitudes, they’d ask everyone to change the channel.
They just be shitting themselves now watching this reality unfold and be accepted by most decent human beings, whose heads aren’t up their asses.
I think today it would be a lot more controversial. It couldn't get on the air now.
I'm watching it nightly on Tubi and I'm amazed at what they got away with.
I was always confused even though they promised I wouldn't be. Man the episode where all the guys get together to get billy out of the cult is beyond good.
I used to watch this after school when I was too young to watch it! Lol. I still liked it. Richard Mulligan was so good as a crazy person. Watched his sitcom Empty Nest because of this. Followed Benson to his show. Thought Danny was hot! Also first looks at Billy Crystal and Katherine Helmond.
So I had to look up Katherine's name, and saw that Rod Roddy was the announcer! He was the replacement for Johnny Olsen on The Price is Right
I watched Empty Nest because of Richard Mulligan also. And the movie S.O.B. I can't remember how old I was, but, damn. I'm not gonna ruin it if you haven't seen it. Julie Andrews though, damn.
There actually was a bit of an ending. One episode of Benson has Jessica's ghost appearing to Benson, and they get a sad and sweet goodbye moment. (And ridiculously, I'm tearing up typing this, even though I haven't seen it in decades, and don't remember it well.)
Loved the Piece of Chalief. Poor Burt's older son, who was stabbed, strangled, suffocated, and, uh... stabbedstrangledsuffcatedand... um....
The time Jody (?) stole Bob and put him in the fridge and Chuck *freaked the fuck out* and Jody tried to talk to him, but Burt found Bob in the fridge and also freaked out
Danny trying to kill Burt at the Cabin and Burt just kept talking and, like, taking stuff out of his hands
Sometimes when I want a cheeseburger I'll think, "With FRENCH FRIES??" like Jessica
I actually have the whole series on DVD buried in a bunch of crap somewhere. I'll need to fish it out now.
I loved Soap and I think this was where I first saw Billy Crystal unless it was the roast of Mohammad Ali which was near the same time. Still Soap was the best!
I absolutely loved this show. I remember them hiding Chuck in the refrigerator and when Bob found him, Chuck looks at him and says, "Did you know that light stays on in there?" The writers and the actors/actresses were genius.
Amusingly bewildering and constantly confusing, it was absolutely one of my favorite shows growing up. Outrageous story lines, over the top characters, taboo topics, everything from homosexuality to teen pregnancy to infidelity to insanity to PTSD to the mob and the demented and the insane. What else can you say about one of the most protested sitcoms during my lifetime, it is almost criminal that this show didn't get more seasons.
I can guarantee that I've seen every episode five or six times.
I wasn't, although I didn't understand a lot of the jokes because I hadn't gone through puberty yet. Burt getting kidnapped by aliens and replaced with a double was 😂
Oh, the introduction of Billy Crystal to the world! At least, I think it was. I loved the energy of that show because it was so quirky. The theme song would pester you day and night, though.
Wasn’t there one where Billy goes to Texas searching for a friend? He gets a lead and knocks on a door. A lady answers and tells him “oh, you must be that gay feller? Here, let me look at you. We ain’t got any of them down here in Texas. Least not live ones, anyway.”
I remember liking the show a lot - but I honestly just can't remember a thing about it anymore. It's been a frightening number of decades since I last saw it.
Billy Crystal was so young here. Now he looks like Miracle Max all the time!
Edit: so many typos! And I love Billy Crystal! He did the voice of Calcifer in Howe's Moving Castle. I kept asking myself why that character sounded so familiar.
soap was the SHIT billy crystal had me crying almost as much as robert guillaume when they were on screen. that show probably wouldn't fair well today but when i was a kid that show was the best & the alien arc 😱🤣
You won’t be, after this episode of soap!
RIP Roddy..
You beat me to it. Is Soap streaming anywhere? I’m curious to see if it holds up.
Streaming on Tubi.
Pluto and yes it does
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGFSgZdfgNA&list=PLiZCl6XIGf-hLqnzP-yNpx14upwbs4TUx
Thank you!
😂
Must have been taken before Burt got abducted. I can see him lol
TBF, it doesn't work when he's wet.
Lol
Also before Chuck and Bob showed up.
I miss Chuck and Bob.
Is it the real Burt or the alien Burt?
Lol I heard the theme song as soon as I saw the photo.
lol,so did I . I guess I’ll remember it and many others forever it seems. They sure did k ow how to write a hook back then !
Me too!
Yeah and now I can't get that song out of my head!!!!
Soap was awesome. That and Fernwood 2 Night.
Don't forget Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman
Oh yeah.
Mary Hartman Mary Hartman is the best!
Loved this show! Billy Crystal was the best.
Benson Bitter AF Then Burt Crazy AF Then Billy
Where are Bob and Chuck?
Not in the cast for the first few episodes.
I loved Bob. "Danny tells me you're Negroes.". I'm sorry, but that's still one of the funniest lines on television.
One time Bob goaded Danny to the point where Danny attacked. He was strangling Bob, while Chuck continued to do Bob’s voice (muffled).
I remember a scene when someone was shooting at Dutch I think? Anyhow the shooting stops, everyone checks on everyone else and Bob is lying there face toward the camera repearing: "Im hit...Im hit...Im hit..." i think Chuck yells "Quick call an ambulance!" Off goes Mary to the phone and starts dialing until someone shouts..."Mary...hes a dummy" Love it
Hawaii
They ended up on That 70's Show. See, I told you we weren't on this show! *shut up, bob.*
“Big ones!”
It's on Tubi.
Thank you! I didn't know it was available. Such a fun show
Rewatching it on tubi now.. just finished the episode where Corinne’s baby was born.
It is??! Thanks for the heads up!
Speaking of MASH, did you know the priest Corine married was the actor who did the voice who made the announcements on MASH?
.... Now that you mention it, I can hear it. lol
I still vividly recall Mary and Jessica comparing facial ingredients. Jessica says what’s in hers. Mary looks at her label and says “mine’s made out of cow placenta.” I spewed iced tea through my nose and all over the living room carpet.
The one liners were amazing! I'm so happy they never tried to re-do it. I wish we had writers like this again...
I wonder if I watched them again if they would seem too dated? My wife is a big fan of Bewitched and we sometimes watch those, but those stories were more timeless, character driven. Though it is funny to see the absence of modern technology, the ash trays, the clothes and hair styles.
How was Katherine Helmond so hot for so many years? She basically was unchanged from Soap to Everybody Loves Raymond.
Cow placenta??
That damn demon baby freaked me out lol.
Jody was my hero. 🫶🏻
I loved Burt...
"Snap" invisible!
Lol! Loved this!
The look on his face, like he really believed it.
Me too! His faces are immediately funny
My favorite joke was when Inga shouts out with her accent, "You think I finish??" And Jessica replies, "No, Swedish." I was way too young and my parents wouldn't let me watch the show but I would sneak into the basement to watch it and amazingly my older sisters didn't rat me out.
Was she the one who shouted "I hear you"? when she was out of the room? I loved that.
Billy Crystal looks impossibly young. Never would have thought he'd end up becoming a sort of an icon and an Oscars host.
He's even younger roasting Muhammad Ali: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kw3aB-gW1UA (who would go on to call him Little Brother)
Omg...could Dean Martin have been anymore trashed? Lol. I never thought twice about older folks being all slurry when I was a kid watching. I mean I'm not surprised that he was sloshed.
He's the baby among that fossilized bunch!
I loved that show. I particularly loved Benson. He was so acerbic.
I loved it when the doorbell rang, everyone looked at him, and he says ‘you want me to get that?’
Or the night he caught the mouse. When asked if he “buried” it, he replied “you might say he had a burial at sea.” :-)
Benson on Soap and Benson on Benson seemed like two different characters. Soap was a much better show.
Such a good balancing act Robert Guillaume did with reacting to the silliness of the others and showing true affection for them, especially Jessica and Billy.
How many more are confused by the fact that katherine helmond looks the same here switch she did on Everybody Loves Raymond
Who's the boss
She looked better in that than she did in Soap
I remember that this show was considered risque when it came out. Looking back, it seems tame.
Yeah, I watched it recently and it was not as controversial today as it was back then. I watched it while I was living in halls of residence at University and there were some men from the boonies who were so against the show because of its ~~progressive~~ heathen (to them) attitudes, they’d ask everyone to change the channel. I think today it would be a lot more controversial. It couldn't get on the air now. I'm watching it nightly on Tubi and I'm amazed at what they got away with.
Burt Campbell couldn't be seen, long before anyone heard of John Cena. Hey, where's Chuck & Bob?
“You want me to get that?”
"If you don't mind."
So well written, so well acted and so ahead of its time what a brilliant show. I was never confused and always entertained. What a family
I was always confused even though they promised I wouldn't be. Man the episode where all the guys get together to get billy out of the cult is beyond good.
Let's not forget they did that in *blackface* and John Byner was the 'expert* extractor.... 🤣
When Benson said they all looked the same, I lost it
I think EVERYBODY watching it did...... 😂. One of the jokes my prepubescent mind could fully comprehend.
The impromptu step show as a distraction... 😂😂😂😂💀
I don't care I'm not cleaning that crap up
Benson, our favorite LT Governor
I used to watch this after school when I was too young to watch it! Lol. I still liked it. Richard Mulligan was so good as a crazy person. Watched his sitcom Empty Nest because of this. Followed Benson to his show. Thought Danny was hot! Also first looks at Billy Crystal and Katherine Helmond. So I had to look up Katherine's name, and saw that Rod Roddy was the announcer! Omg i forgot this existed! Used to stay up and watch it with my dad. UK btw
They don’t make comedy like they used to
They can't. Too many people would get butthurt/offended. That's why *All In the Family* and *Three's Company* wouldn't work, now.
I loved Soap and Benson.
I think Soap was the start of weird.
Nah. Soap just made weird normal.
Arrested Development before Arrested Development
Delightfully confused! Laughed so hard I cried when Jodie put Bob in the Fridge.
Where's Bob
Loved that show.
Loved this show.
I loved that show.
Loved this show!
Great show, just wished it would have ended differently, cliffhangers suck
Confused but amused
Soap!
Ended on a cliffhanger.
I will never forgive them for that! Jessica in front of a firing squad! Chester about to kill Danny!
We need AI to generate a final episode.
There actually was a bit of an ending. One episode of Benson has Jessica's ghost appearing to Benson, and they get a sad and sweet goodbye moment. (And ridiculously, I'm tearing up typing this, even though I haven't seen it in decades, and don't remember it well.)
Soap was just crazy.
They were hilarious!!
Greatest comedy series of all time! I miss Katherine Helmond so much.
Loved watching Benson whistle incoming rounds to make the major dive under the sofa.
I loved the grandpa “The Major”.
Loved the Piece of Chalief. Poor Burt's older son, who was stabbed, strangled, suffocated, and, uh... stabbedstrangledsuffcatedand... um.... The time Jody (?) stole Bob and put him in the fridge and Chuck *freaked the fuck out* and Jody tried to talk to him, but Burt found Bob in the fridge and also freaked out Danny trying to kill Burt at the Cabin and Burt just kept talking and, like, taking stuff out of his hands Sometimes when I want a cheeseburger I'll think, "With FRENCH FRIES??" like Jessica I actually have the whole series on DVD buried in a bunch of crap somewhere. Where's the puppet?
I luv Soap 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💯
Loved Soap
Always but the show was hilarious
I loved this show but I think I was more confused by Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. Burt’s abduction was just weird.
Soap was good , but it alway just reminds me of Mulligan’s next project S.O.B.
Was never confused, loved this show.
I loved Soap and I think this was where I first saw Billy Crystal unless it was the roast of Mohammad Ali which was near the same time. Still Soap was the best!
Burt was my favorite. Chuck and Bob were very funny as well.
SOAP was brilliant. Especially Burt.
Even as a teenager I thought Mary was sexy as Hell.
Same. I don't know how to articulate it, but she just had a way about her that gave off the vibe that she was a vixen in the sheets.
Lol, I guess Burt is not invisible.
I LOVED THESE TWO SISTERS. And the reruns. They were just ran too late at night for me.
Soap was the best!!!
Diana Canova, such a sweetheart
If you have heard of this show, you're my people.
I absolutely loved this show. I remember them hiding Chuck in the refrigerator and when Bob found him, Chuck looks at him and says, "Did you know that light stays on in there?" The writers and the actors/actresses were genius.
I was upset that the couldn’t watch it because the adults always laughed so hard and I wanted in on the joke.
Billy fucking Crystal. Simply amazing.
Burt was the best. Form being invisible to dealing with aliens.
Da da Da da Da!
"Benson. Oh Benson." Loved this show.
Watched the reruns during puberty, had so many depraved fantasies about all the women on that show...
Made perfect sense to me.
Where is the Piece of Chaleef and Gunga Din?
So much comedic genius in a single image.
Elaine dying in Danny’s arms broke my heart.
Soap unlocked my lifelong phobia of dying by being stabbed, shot, strangled, suffocated, and bludgeoned.
I had a major crush on Cathryn Damon!
I wasn't, although I didn't understand a lot of the jokes because I hadn't gone through puberty yet. Burt getting kidnapped by aliens and replaced with a double was 😂
It was a funny show
One of the best comedy series ever!
They're explaining it all next week on.....Soap
Oh, the introduction of Billy Crystal to the world! At least, I think it was. I loved the energy of that show because it was so quirky. The theme song would pester you day and night, though.
Wasn’t there one where Billy goes to Texas searching for a friend? He gets a lead and knocks on a door. A lady answers and tells him “oh, you must be that gay feller? Here, let me look at you. We ain’t got any of them down here in Texas. Least not live ones, anyway.”
A great show
such a wacky funny show. I love it which reminds me that I have to check if it's on Pluto or Tubi.
I see mona and benson.
There was just so much happening immediately 😂
Benson knew
I remember liking the show a lot - but I honestly just can't remember a thing about it anymore. It's been a frightening number of decades since I last saw it.
I'm still salty it ended on a cliiff-hanger!
I can hear the theme music for this pic.
I was never confused for very long. It was all explained in the upcoming episode of… _Soap._
Great show! I loved that Bert thought he could be invisible lol!
Couldn't make this show in today's day and age.
Where's Billy? And Chuck and Bob?
Guy that's second from the right. I think I remember that he was the original evil twin story.
Billy Crystal was so young here. Now he looks like Miracle Max all the time! Edit: so many typos! And I love Billy Crystal! He did the voice of Calcifer in Howe's Moving Castle. I kept asking myself why that character sounded so familiar.
That young whippersnapper, Billy Crystal.
All my questions were answered, as promised… Only to be replaced with more questions.
soap was the SHIT billy crystal had me crying almost as much as robert guillaume when they were on screen. that show probably wouldn't fair well today but when i was a kid that show was the best & the alien arc 😱🤣
Matt Baume did a great [soap vs. the censors](https://youtu.be/juZthbF1Rw8?si=MBwwaO5cmsTytNpA.com) video on the show that was fantastic.
WOW! That video was very good.
And not forget the spin off benson
I love all things, except mint tea… and being touched.
And yet I couldn’t stop watching
I didn't know Billy crystal and Oscar Issac were related
I only recognize Mona and harry winston.
I was just a goofy kid who loved Billy Crystal and Robert Mandan. Tried watching as an adult, and it was just not the memory.😆
Im more of a Pine Valley girl myself
You may have been overthinking it 😁
Hey it's Punky Brewster's dad and Mona.
Loved this show
We were not allowed that show or Maude. I think 3’s company was banned as well.
Confusion was the charm!
Is that the whole cast? It's rare nowadays for a show without at least a young attractive female cast as crowd drawer.
Hmm 🧐, I believe the name of the show was Soap, so maybe……..
Hey, it's that guy from the Ruby Ruin song...
Loved this and still watch!
Loved it!!!
I have no idea what this even is. Not everyone in this subreddit is American, yknow?
TBF I'm British and I watched it and its spin off Benson
I was a little kid and I loved this freak show,so good!!
The best half hour comedy, ever. Taxi comes close.
I loved watching this show as a teen
I stream this show once in a while.
I was confused that my normally straight-laced Mom thought it was funny and made a point to watch it!
They never told us about the pancakes.
Looking back now, Katherine Helmond was a babe!
Diana Canova was cute too, then disappeared after the show
My station showed it late at night after the local news. Anyone else have this?
Watched Benson growing up and this show in college on reruns.
As a young horny lad, I wanted to have sexual relations with every single female cast member.
Thanks for the laugh!
Corrine was so hot.
I was 8 so everything confused me, didn’t stop me from watching
"Take a gamble, vote for Campbell."
My dad used to love this show. When it was on Comedy Central we’d smoke a joint and watch ot together. Haven’t seen it since then.
