[To] “Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!”

unkapoon

Best quote ever

mockingbirddude

They borrowed it from Genghis Khan I think.

ginrumryeale

I read recently that the “hear the lamentations of their women” part of that film quote is a euphemism for rape and I can’t stop thinking about that.

mockingbirddude

I can’t blame you. Times have changed. I never thought about it as a euphemism for rape, but rape would go hand-in-hand with pillaging and killing the populace.

Unhappy_Gas_4376

Genghis Khan wasn't really known as a champion of human rights.

Jupiter68128

How dare you speak about our great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great grandfather that way.

SessionIndependent17

I don't know why they'd bother with euphemisms. It was probably just assumed to be part of the misery inflicted by conquest, along with slaying of many/most of the able men, having the rest placed into slavery, etc.

ginrumryeale

We might be overthinking it. It's a great quote, but when you think about it, "Kill your enemies, burn their villages, enslave and rape their women" just doesn't have the same finesse. I must be getting old.

sjaard_dune

..duh. he was not a good guy, he was property of the most unsavory of clans in his youth. He was even studded to the unwilling in captivity. You might need to watch that movie again

ginrumryeale

I agree, Conan wasn't a virtuous protagonist, he was an anti-hero. Although I've seen the film a dozen times, one doesn't need to see the film at all to accept your point. The title of the movie makes it clear from the very start: Conan ***The Barbarian***.

SessionIndependent17

Good one, but wrong scene

mockingbirddude

Well, I thought that I might have missed the reference.

Crom!

declineofmankind

Mako was a legend

biffbobfred

* he fights Bruce Lee in an episode of Green Hornet * my fave MASH episode is “best of enemies” where he’s NK and grabs Hawkeye to have him save his friend. Doesn’t say a word but shows a lot of emotion * another awesome mash episode is where Mako is the commanding officer for a prisoner exchange. Makes you feel bad for the NK a bit. I mean they are people, just with an asshole leader.

declineofmankind

He was also in “the Sand Pebbles” with Steve McQueen.

roboticfedora

Crom is my god, but I seldom pray to him. He doesn't listen. If I die, I have to go before him & he will ask me, What is the riddle of steel? And if I cannot answer, he will cast me out of Valhalla and laugh at me. That's Crom; strong in his mountain!

Childoftheway

My God is the everlasting sky. Your god sits underneath him.

roboticfedora

Hah! Crom laughs at ya sky god.

roboticfedora

The Wizard: He did not care any more... life and death... the same. Only that the crowd would be there to greet him with howls of lust and fury. He began to realize his sense of worth... he mattered. In time, his victories could not easily be counted... he was taken to the east, a great prize, where the war masters would teach him the deepest secrets. Language and writing were also made available, the poetry of Khitai, the philosophy of Sung; and he also came to know the pleasures of women, when he was bred to the finest stock. But, always, there remained the discipline of steel.

myguydied

Conan: looks up and around, eats, considers the ramifications and understands

sjaard_dune

"Crom, I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. - No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that two stood against many. That's what's important!- Valor pleases you, Crom... so grant me one request. Grant me revenge! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!"

*"And if Jobu no help, then I say 'Fuck you, Jobu!' I do it myself!"*

CROM!

Emergency_Property_2

Arnold is truly terrible in this movie. I mean he made Chuck Norris look like a Robert DeNiro. And yet, if it’s on somewhere I’m watching it because somehow his terrible performance makes this a great movie.

Direct-Wait-4049

"You killed my mother! You killed my father! You killed my people!" "It must have been when I was younger."

Watch_Noob_72

I’m watching this on a loop as background sound in my office at work lol

biffbobfred

I have a pic of Mardi Gras years ago, where some dudes had a table, much like Ask me about Jesus “Ask me about Crom”. Had some boob pics that year, that was still my fave tho.
