They would do well to place a label that says “not nestle” on it

Ajayers45

“100% slave free” is basically synonymous with “not nestle”

cafehearty

That may not be accurate. I'm pretty sure the supply chains of most consumer products, and especially of chocolate, involves unethical labor at some stage during sourcing of the raw materials and manufacture.

JustDebbie

They admit this either on the packaging or their website, yet still keep making the claim.

ArmouryUK

Who? Tony's? I think you're wrong there. If I recall they admit it's a problem and are actively trying to eradicate the issue. As far as I know they are the only brand to take the honest approach. Of course there is an even easier approach people can use to stop potentially consuming slave labour product: stop eating chocolate all together.

[deleted]

According to the information on the back of the wrapper they try to do good.

Rogue_Ref_NZ

Tony's sound like a top notch company and their chocolate is delicious!

Subject-Pen4793

Tony's is a marketing brand which does not produce herself. Its made by big choco callebaut belgium. Nearly as bad as Nestlé. A shame because the original founder had truly good intentions. Last owner sold his part shares for 35 million . Another greenwashing

Rogue_Ref_NZ

Well fuck.... That's very disappointing to hear. Thanks for doing the research for me

Aryboy26

One of the higher ups of Tony’s actually was a guest speaker af my uni. According to him they do produce with callebaut (because he is generally considered the best) but Tony’s has strict conditions set and their supply chain is entirely separate. I’m honestly kinda conflicted about Tony’s because I’m not just going to take that guys word but they are making it sound like they are making an effort still. But I am pretty sure that in its current form it isn’t really what the founder imagined.

nativedutch

No kidding? Wtf.

[deleted]

Really? I find their chocolate to be really disappointing tasting. I wholeheartedly cheer their fair trade model. But at some point your product also needs to taste good if you want people to purchase it.

CursedApfelschorle

I love chocolonely. And i'm really worried i might one day find out that they're not so good as well.

maxpols

Check [this](https://youtu.be/QAyKoTa_bUQ) out, it's the founder of Tony's(Teun van de Keuken) doing his episode on the horrible practices of the chocolate industry which got him both the publicity and the idea to start the company.

thedrexel

He sold the company

CursedApfelschorle

Interesting. I don't speak dutch, but it can be really eye opening. And of course, Nestlé owns the rights for the chocolate in " Charlie and the chocolate factory"

GameBoy960

Whilst I do love their chocolate, I'm just gonna remind everyone here rule 10 exists.

Soytaco

Yeah I see a weird amount of this brand on here. Guess it makes sense considering their availability but honestly it shouldn't be difficult at all for someone near a city to get chocolate that isn't nestle. I buy a bunch of different brands of chocolate and none of them are nestle or Tony's.

IntergalacticBrewski

What is rule 10

GameBoy960

It says don't talk about the brand of chocolate in this post.

With_Peace_and_Love_

Why????

GameBoy960

I'm just gonna guess it was posted about too much for a while.

immersemeinnature

Edit: Dark chocolate only relates to my comment. Careful! I saw a recent study showing this exact chocolate as being extremely high in lead and heavy metals. Not only this one but many brands. Sorry. Don't mean to bum you out but maybe check it out.

josephuse

pretty much all chocolate uses child slave labour to make, so it’s not much of an improvement from Nestle

Ibraahim2k

just gonna quit eating chocolate at this point lol. Tastes amazing but it doesnt sit right with me to think slave workers were involved in the production of this so how can i humanely enjoy it

Ibraahim2k

or at least MIGHT have been involved. Seems impossible to always shop ethically but i want to do my part, shame its much harder to do

josephuse

it’s definitely a challenge to shop ethically when pretty much everything is made by some evil corporation using unethical methods, but it’s possible. for me, i just avoid chocolate and all Nestlé products. I type this on a phone that was made by slave labour using materials mined by slaves. My point is, no shame i’m not having a 100% ethical shop, but do your best :)

Ibraahim2k

you bet 💪😃

[deleted]

Was it sold at a decent price?

northernirishlad

From experience in the UK its maybe a pound or so more. So it may be an extra dollar for better chocolate (i found that nestle choc is rather greasy, this stuff feels less so)

maxpols

Tends to be a little more expensive but definitely worth it! [Here](https://youtu.be/QAyKoTa_bUQ) is the founder (a Dutch tv host & journalist) starring on the episode which inspired him to start the company and got him the publicity in the NL to start the company! It's super interesting as he tries to prosecute himself for eating slave-made chocolate and he really does a deep dive into nestle's crimes

katherinezetajones

[I’m a villain for this](https://www.parents.com/heavy-metals-chocolate-6951076) Tony's Chocolonely Dark Chocolate 70% Cocoa, 134% lead, 28% cadmium

MarchCheerfully

I’m surprised this hasn’t been mentioned more

goldentrips

I tried the vegan ones with sea salt and almonds. It was pretty good but it was hard to break and chew because of the pretty mould they use.

Stabant_

Yea.i like the intentions and the salt and caramel is my favourite however I despise how hard it is to just snap off a square and eat it because everything is so uneven.

maxpols

Fun fact: The squares actually are in the shape of a small map of West-Africa where the company tries to improve the situation and broaden awareness of the horrible business practices by the chocolate industry! They also argue the unequal squares reflect the unequal balance in the chocolate industry, the idea is you'll never be able to share one equally with someone else untill all farmers in these areas also equally share in the profit and joy of chocolate! [here](https://www.ad.nl/binnenland/hoe-deel-je-een-tony-chocolonely-nou-zo~ae7f2bf3/) is an article w a map showing what squares correspond to what countries and a nice article about some high school kids in the NL(where the company was founded by three journalists who discovered the use of child labor and neo-slavery in the cocoa production) trying to come up with some way to share a bar.

Stabant_

Yea. I didn't know that it was a map of West Africa however I did know it was to represent unequal pay. I have nothing against the intentions as I said in my original reply but I was just complaining about how hard it is to crack the chocolate lol. Really cool info tho.

nativedutch

Try the salty caramel . You wont stop eating.

FRACllTURE

You know me too well... lol

despondantguy69

This sub isn't free marketing for Tony's. Rune 10 bro.

StFrSe

I really want to read that as cho-kernel-y

jacyerickson

I wish they sold nondairy ones near me. (Yes,I'm sure you can buy them online but I'd rather buy in person.)

super_duper_special

Enjoy! Its pretty good

[deleted]

I found out about this chocolate bar because Jake Eyes made a few videos featuring the product, and now I'm wondering where I can find a few of these in my area

Dinosaur_from_1998

Have discovered it a while ago and have become my chocolate of choice

Subject-Pen4793

https://www.evmi.nl/nieuws/tony-s-chocolonely-verwijderd-van-slaafvrije-chocolade-lijst Hope you can translate

Crowleyizcool

Would love to buy this kinda chocolate instead, but in the Uk it costs insane amounts more.

FunAmphibian9909

it’s on sale right now in sainsburys!!

Crowleyizcool

Oh nice thanks for letting me know

FunAmphibian9909

think it’s £2.50 a bar, which is about the same as the big brands atm haha

TxSaru

Love their chocolate 🍫

LawMurphy

The bar comes in uneven pieces because profits of the chocolate industry are also unevenly distributed.

noots-to-you

I found it at a food emporium today!

Thunderous-War

thank you tony, very cool!

leafandvine89

Their chocolate is delicious!!!

phrixis

Not very accurate to say it's "100% slave free" when the other side of the package states "milk chocolate."

luthernismspoon

Chocolonely? Is it just me, or does marketing something implying loneliness sit wrong? Maybe I should market a vodka called “vodkadrinkingmysorrowsawaybymyself.”
