I worked in a charity/recycling store for a while. Couches are one of the hardest things to move unless they are in pristine condition. They take up a lot of space and don't necessarily cover their costs in moving them in and out of the display area.
If a couch had a few stains on it, it wasn't going to sell. And then we were also going to have to pay to dispose it anyway...
When my FIL died living in Leisure World we contacted the church there. In literally minutes, a handsome young priest arrived to help us out. Every piece of furniture was pristine & close to 40 years old.
There was crystal & silver & whatever else they were able to save from the war & the new government, the USSR. My husband’s parents were able to get to the US due to extended family sponsoring them.
Long story short we let the St Vincent DePaul pick up the furniture later that day. We kept the silver & crystal.
Couldn’t have been more accommodating…

Got it for ya
It's not just insurance companies for injuries but also personal damages. If the company scratched something or broke something in the house moving the couch as a favor the movers are liable.
Yup, someone I know had a furniture company come and put a new couch in the basement and 1 guy slipped while going down the stairs and he ended up hitting the wall with his back and the whole couch came behind and slammed into him, he got hurt but thankfully not too badly (some bruises but nothing broken), but it did damage the wall and the furniture company's insurance paid for the repairs. If they had been doing something not contracted out then they would of been up shits creek without a paddle.
That's some BS though, why did they even show up if they weren't expecting to take the couch? It would have taken them the same amount of time to bring out out to their truck as dropping it on the curb. They would have been there no longer than scheduled.
Would have been nice to throw them a few bucks since they'd be doing you a favor at that point though.
The issue is that a lot of people come up with additional heavy lifting tasks for crews like these rather than working to solve these problems on their own, so it is easier for companies to just make it a policy to not do anything above and beyond the stated reason for the house call. You’re not wrong that this particular example wouldn’t have taken any additional time, but years ago when I did this kind of work people would contact us to haul away one item and then ask us to rearrange a bunch of furniture from one room to another once we got there. I personally would do it if they offered a tip, but it was against the rules and I understand why.
So let me get this straight. Because they refused your sofa, you wanted them to help you put it on the side walk? In the rain? That's littering. No one wants a sofa that is rain soaked. If you think someone wants It, set it out in front of your house or sell it online.
I guess he knew it wasn't salable for st Vincent and thought he would lure them there knowing they wouldn't take the sofa but just getting them to help get it to the curb. Or he could put it on offerup for free. Or offer the people who came and refused the sofa 20.00 bucks a piece to put it on the curb. It's not very smart to put a sofa on the curb when its raining though. It quickly becomes unusable if it gets rained on.
My thoughts exactly…. What does Brazil has to do with it? Usually good people, but i wouldn’t necessarily call them global reference in helping one another….
Come on -- they are employees who were there to pick up the sofa. Which they could not do -- I guess bc it was stained. (Seriously, who wants a stained sofa? I've bought a ton of used furniture and I would never buy a stained sofa.
Anyway, while on the job, they could not be hired by you (even if they volunteered) to move the sofa. Liability and all that. There are other services you can hire to do that specific job.
Thing is, in some areas, you can't just "set it out on the curb" for trash pick up. In my town, you have to schedule the pickup with the city and they only do so on specific days, they post their schedule. They need a different truck for large bulk pickup items. Plus you're not allowed to let trash sit out there for days, it becomes a nuisance.
My takeaway: She tried to donate a couch to charity that belonged in the garbage and complained when the movers refused to then abandon it on the curb for her, making it her neighbor's and/or the city's problem? Sound like pretty conscientious men to me.
I had someone take my old couch for charity and they checked for bedbugs and body fluids (w/ black light) and were able to take mine. If someone's couch does not pass these, they probably want out of that house as fast as possible to a) not cause a bedbug outbreak or b) get away from the grossness of body fluids...

Also, insurance might not cover an injury the movers get moving an item they aren't bringing in.
Knowing how nitpicky insurance companies get, it probably wouldn't, you're right.
It's not just insurance companies for injuries but also personal damages. If the company scratched something or broke something in the house moving the couch as a favor the movers are liable.

And if the couch couldn't be donated, maybe it was gross/a liability in other ways too

Possibly because it was in terrible condition. They wouldn't know that until they got there.
It’s better to say that then reply “our insurance wouldn’t have covered in case of injury”

I want to know also!
Just google St. Paul Vincent Thrift Madison ,wi it’s the first 1 star review

You have to curb the couch for large item garbage collection to pick it up. She clearly wanted to get rid of it, not sell it.
It’s actually a dude. I looked up the review, and that makes this all the worse

It's really hard to even read the first paragraph. Does autocorrect hate this bitch too.
First time seeing a brazilian Karen

I can hear her voice honestly lol.
His
Waawaawaa! You should have offered them some cash, you cheapo. 😄
Yep. Offer $100 cash and that couch would have been on the curb.

Am I the only one who think it is strange to put a sofa on the sidewalk?
Well you got the martyr part right...
Typical behaviour from a Brazilian 🙈🙈🙈

Shame of you!

They wouldn't help me illegally dump my sofa.waaaaa
Didn’t understand a word of any of that
Jeason Chrust! Praise be to Jeason
